Jaco Van Zyl early leader in SA Open

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Jaco Van Zyl opened up a one-shot lead with a 65 on day one of The BMW SA Open  as he aims to win his first European Tour title on home soil.
The South African has 13 wins on the Sunshine Tour but has never won this event, which has an illustrious list of home victors including Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Trevor Immelman, Hennie Otto and Richard Sterne, all of whom are in the field this week, holding 11 titles between them.
This is Van Zyl's 15th time at the world's second oldest national Open Championship and although he has missed just one cut, on his debut in 2000, his best finish is 12th, in the 2014 season.
A win this week at Glendower Golf Club would not only hand him a first national title but a maiden European Tour win after four second places, including at the dramatic Turkish Airlines Open in November when he was denied by a brilliant finish from Victor Dubuisson.
After firing an opening 65 to take the lead ahead of countryman Shaun Norris, the 36 year old admitted that lifting the trophy on Sunday would be a special experience.
"But I've got a long season ahead and I'll take it week by week," he said
Van Zyl was in the fourth group out but 33 players will have to return for an 06.30 shotgun start on Friday after the threat of lightning brought an early end to the day's play.
Starting on the tenth, Van Zyl birdied his first and the 13th before back-to-back gains on the 15th and 16th saw him turn in 32. A further birdie came on the first and was then followed by an eagle on the par five second to move him to seven under and a two-shot lead.
Norris was one of those two shots back after he birdied the 11th and 12th before an eagle on the 15th catapulted him up the leaderboard. Another birdie came on the 17th but a shot was given back on the next as he turned in 32.
A birdie on the first got him back on track before a dropped shot on the fourth and a birdie on the fifth had him five under through 14 holes.
But he would soon have a share of the lead as he picked up a birdie despite a wayward tee shot on the eighth and Van Zyl dropped his only shot of the day on the seventh after a chip from an awkward lie on the edge of the green.
Van Zyl responded in impressive fashion, though, sending his approach  on the eighth to three feet and moving back ahead.

"The first couple of holes today, there was not a breath of wind, it was nice and cool, so you really needed to capitalise on the first couple of holes," he said.
"By the time we got to our eighth hole the wind really started picking up and it was warming up a little bit, so it just got so much tougher out there.
"It really felt good out there today. I felt very comfortable and there was not too much rust."
The afternoon conditions proved to be more difficult with South African duo Keith Horne and Jbe Kruger posting the best scores among the late starters with a pair of 67s.
Horne started with back-to-back birdies before dropping a shot on the fourth but made further gains on the fifth and ninth. He dropped a shot on the 12th but picked up four shots in as many holes from the 14th with an eagle and two birdies to get within one of the lead before registering a closing bogey.
Kruger was flawless in his effort, picking up shots on the 15th, 16th, 17th, second and fourth.
Two-time champion Goosen was then at four under after eight birdies and two double-bogeys in a remarkable round, alongside Daniel Brooks, Estanislao Goya, Ross McGowan, Justin Walters and David Drysdale, who had three holes to play.
There was then a large group of players at three under including World Number 14 Branden Grace and rookies Nino Bertasio and Laurie Canter.
Tournament host Els had found himself three over after 14 holes but went birdie-eagle on the seventh and eighth before a missed short putt on the ninth dropped him to one over.
Defending champion Andy Sullivan endured a difficult day with a three over 75 in his first round defending a European Tour title.
He opened with a birdie but double-bogeyed the second before getting up and down for another gain on the eighth. Back-to-back bogeys came on the 13th and 14th, the latter seeing a full 360 degree lip out, before a shot was picked up on the next.
But a four-putt on the par three 17th resulted in a second double bogey of the day and a disappointing start for the Englishman.
Paul Dunne pulled out of the event due to illness while Nicolas Colsaerts and Richard Finch retired during the first round with respective shoulder and Achilles injuries.
All of the Scots pros in the field, including David Drysdale who is well in the mix with a few holes to play, have still to complete their rounds.
But Perth amateur Daniel Young is heading for a halfway exit after a 79 which left him in T146 position. Young had a double bogey 5 at the short third, a doble bogey 6 at the par-4 fpurth and a double bogey 6 at the par-4 fifth - six shots dropped over three early holes in an outward 41

Byrne misses cut but Lutton sitting pretty

Former Northern Open champion James Byrne from Banchory, now based in Malaysia, missed the cut by two strokes at the halfway stage of the Asian Tour Qualifying School Stage 1 event at Windsor Park G C, Bangkok.
Byrne had rounds of 75 and 78 (two double and a triple in halves of 43-35) for 153. He did have an eagle 3 at the 18th but it was too little, too late.
At the Springfield Royal GC venue at Hua Hin, Thailand, Aberdeen-born Clarke Lutton added a 73 to his opening 72 and is T27 on 145 after two rounds, four shots inside the limit mark.

Forrest moves into top 10 on a tough day at

Royal Melbourne

Grant Forrest improved to a share of eighth place with a second-round, one -over-par 73 for a halfway total of 145 after tough weather conditions today in the Australian Master of Amateurs tournament at Royal Melbourne Golf Club.
The former Scottish amateur champion dropped fewer shots than most of the field of 78 competitors as he finished the day only three shots behind new leader, Ben Schlottman, a USA college player, who has had a paitr of 71s for two-under 143.
Forrest birdied two par-5 holes, the second and the 15th. He bogeyed the first, 13th and 17th.
Connor Syme is T21 after 75 for 148 which included a double bogey 5 at the short seventh. He had a bag of four birdies, at the second, fourth, 12th and 15th
Jack McDonald's 76 for 150 and a share of 36th place included a double bogey 6 at the first hole in an outward 40. He birded three par-5 holes - the second, 12th and 15th.
Ewen Ferguson is T43 on 151 with rounds of 75 and 76. He had a triple bogey 6 at the short third and a double bogey 7 at the long fourth. The five-hole stretch from the fourth to the eighth cost him eight dropped shots in all.
He had an eagle 3 at the long 12th and birdies at the second, 13th and 15th.

Royal Melbourne bites back on Day 2

//
FROM AUSTRALIAN GOLF WEBSITE
A day after 24 players bettered par on Royal Melbourne Golf Club's famous West Course – and the top 11 combined to rip 48 shots out of par – only four found red numbers today in the second round of the Australian Master of the Amateurs.
There was no antidote for the poisonous double bite of a strong southerly wind and bouncy greens as club member Tom Power-Horan shot the day’s best 70 among the early groups out.
And only when American Ben Schlottman matched his first-round 71 later on was his one-under total bettered.
Schlottman, 19, a sophomore at Auburn University, actually feared the worst when he hooked his drive off the first tee in round one and, amazingly, lost his ball en route to a double-bogey.
But 35 holes later, he stands alone at two under after playing a round that felt completely different despite the same total in far tougher conditions.
“That’s a totally different 71 today. I played so much better. The 71 yesterday really felt like a struggle and I just got it in the house and felt like it was a good score for how I was hitting it,” Schlottman said.
“Today, though, I putted the ball wonderfully and didn’t make many mistakes.”
The world No.136 said he’d blown a few tournaments this past college season in the early holes and feared he’d done the same yesterday on a hole renowned for its wide fairway.
“That’s such a bad miss and I just thought, `Here goes another one’,” he said.
“Sometimes you shoot yourself in the foot in the first few holes of a tournament and I’ve done that a bit recently so I was thinking, `Oh no, this is going to be a long time down in Australia’.
“But I’ve learnt a lot at Auburn.
“I showed up the first day for practice rounds here and the first shot I landed on the first green bounced 30 yards over and I had no clue what I was doing.
“But in college golf we play in so many different conditions that you learn to adjust quickly and that helped me a ton to adjust out here.”
Schlottman smiled broadly when asked if he’d seen a golf course play as firm and bouncy as Royal Melbourne did today.
“There’s no kind of ground like this at home. It might be somewhere in the US, but I haven’t seen it.”
And he was quick not to get ahead of himself despite his outstanding haul of five birdies today.
“I’ll just take it a shot at a time, I think. I’m hoping just not to lose a ball off the first tee tomorrow.”
South Korea took the lead in the separate “World Cup” teams event, thanks largely to a fighting 71 by Seoul’s Sun-ho Yun, who joined Power-Horan and Sydneysider Harrison Endycott (75) at one under.
World No.8 American Aaron Wise held tough on the brutal closing stretch today, going square on the final four holes to stay at even par despite a 77.
He’s tied fifth with South African Paul Boshoff and Melbourne’s Andrew Schonewille, another to thrive in the testing conditions with a 73.
But two other Victorians didn’t fare so well in their own back yard with overnight leader Zach Murray and good mate David Micheluzzi crashing down the leaaderboard with 82 and 81 respectively.
The VIS teammates each finished on four over and were relatively upbeat when they learnt they were only six shots off the pace after starting in the last two groups out.
But they weren’t alone.
No fewer than 20 scores of 80 or worse were recorded with the first-round leaders among the worst hit as conditions toughened during the round.
So tough was the wind that the seemingly innocuous par-three 7th, measuring little more than 130m, was played in a combined 15 over par by the final four groups on course.
