Knox is lucky but playing partner Leishman

still waiting to hole final putt in Round 3

SPRINGFIELD, New Jersey – Rain delays rarely hit at opportune moments, but the timing was especially cruel for Marc Leishman on Saturday at the US PGA Championship.
Leishman watched his playing partner Russell Knox finish off a par on No. 18 for a round of 67, then stood ready to try his own 12-foot birdie attempt when the horn blew suspending play.
It meant that while Knox was able to leave Baltusrol Golf Club as the rain began to fall, Leishman had to stick around all afternoon with the hopes of returning to hit one final putt – an opportunity he was never afforded.
To his credit, the affable Aussie took the bad break in stride.
“Can’t do anything about it. They’re going to blow the horn when they’re going to blow it,” Leishman said. “Would have been nice to get an extra 10 seconds, but that’s the way it goes.”

To add insult to injury, Knox tweeted to Leishman during the rain delay that he had “grub, showered and feet now up” while Leishman was still at the course.
“Good for him that he finished and didn’t have to come back in the morning,” Leishman said with a grin. “Hopefully I’ll come back, one shot and then go back and relax for a bit.”
Unfortunately for Leishman, the PGA of America’s revised plan for Sunday means there won’t be much time for rest. He’ll return to the course at 7 a.m. ET to attempt his final birdie putt, an effort that would close out a 4-under 66 and take him to 4 under for the tournament.
Make or miss, though, he’ll head shortly thereafter to the first tee to begin his fourth round, where he’ll be joined once again by a well-rested Knox since the PGA opted not to change pairings for the final round.
