Women should marry a Muirfield member if

they want to play there, says Peter Alliss

NEWS RELEASE
Veteran BBC golf commentator Peter Alliss says women who want to play at  Muirfield should "marry a member" in order to play, after existing male members voted against women joining the club.
The Gullane, East Lothian golf club - whose proper title is The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers - said voting in favour of allowing women had fallen just short of the required two thirds majority.
Governing body the R and A has responded by saying it would not stage the Open "at a venue that does not admit women as members".
Speaking to 5 Live Afternoon Edition's Sarah Brett and Chris Warburton, Alliss, 85, said the vote was an emotive subject, but stressed that wives and partners of existing members could already play as guests and visitors.
"They get all the facilities. If somebody wants to join, you'd better get married to someone who's a member," he said.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Most of the members at Muirfield would be married already!

Major loss to East Lothian and Edinburgh

The last time The Open Championship was held at Muirfield (2013) independent research for The R and A demonstrated an economic benefit to East Lothian and Edinburgh of nearly £70 million. Well that’s not going to happen again any time soon. Well done chaps (NOT).
