Mixed fortunes for Murrayfield pair in Wales

Murrayfield members Alastair Thurlow and Andrew Ni, the only Scots in a big field for the Welsh Youths Open championship at Whitchurch Golf Club, Cardiff, shot 71 and 79 respectively in the first round.
Thurlow matched the par despite a double bogey at the first and a triple bogey 7 at the 18th. He also bogeyed the fourth. The Edinburgh youngster compensated with birdies at the third, eighth, ninth, 10th, 12th and 13th to be tied 14th at the end of the day, three shots behind four players sharing the lead on 68.
Ni had three double bogeys in halves of 38 and 41 for his 79 which left him in joint 103rd positon and needing a very good second-round score to be among the leading 45 and ties who will advance at the end of 36 holes to the final two rounds on Sunday.
