Back-at-best Hume wins in Wales as Scots

dominate top placings

Spearheaded by Barry Hume's four rounds in the 60s to win by two shots, Scots dominated the leading positions in the Welsh men's open amateur stroke-play championship at Royal St David's Golf Club, Harlech.
A former Scottish amateur champion who had a lean and short spell as a professional, Hume has come back to his best form in the last season or two.
He had rounds of 67, 66, 66 and 69 for an eight-under-par total of 268. His final round included a double bogey 6 and he also dropped shots at the eighth, ninth and 10th but Hume plays a risk-and-reward game and he did have gains at the fourth, fifth, sixth, 11th and 16th.
The Haggs Castle man won by two shots from fellow Scot Craig Howie (Peebles) whose 270 aggregate was made up of 71, 65, 66 and 68. Howie birdied the second and fifth in his final round and looked at that point as if he would mount a challenge to Hume but Craig was one over par for his remaining holes - 12 pars and a bogey at the 13th.
Yet another Scot, Calum Fyfe (Cawder) tied with Englishman Bill Enefer for third place on 271. Fyfe's rounds were 66, 68, 70 and 67.
Sandy Scott, who shot the round of the tournament - a seven-under-par 62 in the third round, finished tied fifth on 272. His other scores were 68, 74 and 68.  He could have tied for second place but bogeyed the 14th and 16th in his final round.
Still another very good effort from the Nairn youngster who looks like he is going places.
Kyle Godsman (Moray) finished tied 24th on 280 (73-71-67-69) and last year's Scottish boys' U18 match-play champion, Will Porter (Carnoustie) finished joint 34th on 283 with his second and fourth rounds of 73 and 75 cancelling out the good work he did in his first and third efforts of 67 and 68.
