Down to last eight in Scottish U18 boys championship at Murcar

Top seeds Scott and Franssen  KOd but Lawrie

marches on into quarter-finals

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
On an eventful day when both the No 1 and No 2 seeds were beaten,  Deeside's Michael Lawrie claimed the fifth-round scalp of giant-killer Fintan McKenna (Royal Aberdeen), going two up after 12, three up after 15 and finally winning by 3 and 2 to enter the quarter-finals of the Scottish U18 boys' championship at Murcar Links this afternoon.
It's the second year in a row that the Robert Gordon's College pupil has made it through to the last eight.
It's a tournament in which Michael's dad Paul Lawrie, the 1999 Open champion, was never able to play because he did not have a low enough handicap to enter.
McKenna, the Royal Aberdeen teenager, who shot a course record 62 at Royal Burgess last summer in the Scottish boys' stroke-play championship, was back in the news this morning when he knocked over the No 1 seed, Sandy Scott (Nairn) by one hole in the fourth round

Lawrie won by 5 and 4 over Brendan Murdoch (Craigie Hill) in the round of the last 32 and then by 3 and 2 against McKenna.
Lawrie will now play, on Friday morning, John Paterson (St Andrews New), who was the first player into the last eight. He won by 7 and 6 against Anglo-Scot Matthew Watson (Beamish Park) in the fifth round.

There were two Balgownie boys in the last 16. Craig Leith joined McKenna in the fifth round by beating Andrew Benson (West Lothian) at the 20th and then carried the Royal Aberdeen banner into the quarter-finals with a 3 and 2 win over Ryan Morrison (Windlesham).
No 2 seed Rory Franssen (Inverness) was down all the way in his Round 5 match against Dylan Burt (Bellshill) who was four up after 12 holes and eventually won by 2 and 1 as the North lad staged a late challenge.
But North of Scotland boys champion Andrew Moir (Elgin) is still there after beating Loretto pupil John Paul Ralph 2 and 1.
