Paul Lawrie makes sub-par start to 25th year on European Tour

Paul Lawrie marked the start of his 25th year on the European Tour with a sub-par, four-birdie round of 69 in the Joburg Open. He birdied the first, ninth, long 15th and 17th in halves of 34 and 35. His bogeys came at the short 13th and the 18th.
The Aberdonian, winner of the 1999 Open at Carnoustie, is four shots off the leading scores of 65
Ross McGowan followed a hole-in-one at the par-5 fifth on the East course with four birdies in a five-hole stretch along the back nine to open with a 67, with Marcel Siem also two off the pace after dropping a stroke on his final hole.
Challenge Tour graduate Max Orrin had looked on course to set the early pace with two eagles and three birdies in his first 14 holes, but dropped three strokes over the closing holes to close a three-under 69
