English men's county title race is blown wide open by Lincolnshire and Somerset victories

The title race at the English Men’s County Championship was blown wide open today when both Lincolnshire and Somerset won their matches at Wychwood Park in Cheshire.
They join yesterday’s winners, Hampshire and Lancashire, on two points apiece – with one day’s play left in the round robin tournament.
The eventual outcome is likely to be decided on countback, so all four counties will be on a mission to win as many games as possible in tomorrow’s deciders.
Somerset and Lincolnshire will face each other in the top match, while Lancashire will play Hampshire.
“This is great for county golf,” said Lincolnshire captain Steve Brattan, whose team beat Hampshire 6-3 on a perfect autumn day.
Somerset captain Justin Lane echoed him after his side defeated Lancashire 5-4: “This is great for the event, there’s nothing worse than having a dead rubber.”
Both teams came out determined to make an impact in the foursomes, having each lost all three games on the first day. Today, Somerset managed to win two, but Lincolnshire were still on the back foot after they only secured one point from the morning’s play.
Brattan remarked: “They fought in the foursomes but it went the wrong way at the wrong time.
"But their performance was outstanding in the singles and it’s all down to the ability of the players and their grit and determination.”
The Lincolnshire side started well, got ahead early and stayed there. England international Ashton Turner was taken to the last by Tom Robson but held on to his narrow advantage to win one up. Further down the order his team-mates were in control and the points steadily followed from boy international Billy Spooner, Adam Wainwright, Nick Watson and Sam Whittaker, who completed the scoreline when he defeated Hampshire’s anchorman Scott Gregory. Watson won both his matches today for Lincolnshire.
After yesterday, it’s a great feeling to be in this position and still going forward,” said Brattan, who added: “We have got to get the foursomes right tomorrow!”
Somerset, meanwhile, made a quick start with their two foursomes wins and their lead proved critical when the singles were shared three apiece.
“Yesterday I think the lads were a bit anxious, only one of them has played in this event before,” said Lane. “But they realised they are as good as the other counties and they performed beautifully today. They came out of the blocks very hot and just kept going.”
His players had to withstand some spectacular play from Lancashire. In the foursomes Sean Towndrow holed the second shot on the eighth for a winning eagle and in the afternoon Ian Kenwright holed his approach to the 15th for another eagle two.
However, Matt Turner kept his nerve to beat Kenwright on the last while Josh Hilleard and Will Poole (image © Leaderboard Photography) both won on the 17th. Hilleard and Poole both had a 100 per cent winning record today.
Today’s results prompted the teams and their supporters to assess a range of permutations and possibilities from tomorrow’s matches.
At the moment, three teams – Lancashire, Lincolnshire and Hampshire – have all amassed 9½ game points, while Somerset have 7½.
Hampshire captain Steve Williams summed up: “All four counties can win and all we can do is our best and hope that’s good enough. We will try and pick up every point – but all four counties are saying the same!”

PORSCHE EUROPEAN OPEN REPORT AND SCORES

Advantage Jaidee in Germany

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee will take a  one-shot advantage into the final round of the Porsche European Open after a seven under par round of 64 in Germany.
Jaidee edged clear of a packed leaderboard on 13 under par with four birdies in his closing seven holes at Golf Resort Bad Griesbach, which came after his only bogey of the day on the tenth hole.
Former European Ryder Cup player Ross Fisher had set the pace for much of the day after four birdies in his opening 12 holes, but the Englishman carded consecutive bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes to drop back to 12 under par.
Fisher, who won the European Open title seven years ago at the London Golf Club, is joined in a three-way share of second place by compatriot Graeme Storm, who salvaged a bogey on the final hole by sinking a 30ft putt for a round of 69, and Sweden’s Pelle Edberg, who signed for the lowest round of the week so far, posting five birdies in a row from the 12th hole en route to an eight under par 63.
Ryder Cup star Jamie Donaldson is a shot further back on 11 under par after a round of 67 which included an eagle on the 12th hole.

He shares fifth place with Finland’s Mikko Ilonen and Sweden’s Magnus A Carlsson, both of whom signed for rounds of 67.
Meanwhile, Denmark’s Lasse Jensen aced the par three second hole in his round of 67 to register the 43rd hole-in-one of a record-breaking European Tour season.
Key player quotes
Thongchai Jaidee – 64 (-1 total)
“I played solid all three rounds but today I putted much better. You have to have good tee shots here as the greens are tricky. I enjoy playing this course and my game is good right now. I’m confident and I hit a lot of good shots. Seven under is very good for me today. I’ve not had seven under for a long time. Normally I’ve been about four under par, but the greens are soft and I can attack the pins here.”
Ross Fisher – 69 (-12 total)
“I felt like I played really well for 11 holes and had I under control. Then I had a loose tee shot on 12 and couldn’t go for it in two, but still had a chance for birdie and then 16 was a poor tee shot, and I was unlucky with the lie. That was the tough one missing the green from that distance – it was criminal. I shouldn’t be doing that. It was nice to hole a ten footer on the last and 69 is a decent score.
It would mean a lot to win this trophy again. It’s great that the European Open is back on the schedule. Porsche is a great sponsor that have stepped up and there is so much history with the European Open. I’m fortunate to have won it before, and I’ve given myself a chance to win it again.”
Graeme Storm – 69 (-12 total)
“It could have been better today. I should have holed those putts on 11 and 12 but left them short. I seemed to do that quite a lot today. I was a bit disappointed to finish with a bogey on 18 but the way it panned out, it wasn’t a bad bogey in the end.
It would mean everything to win. I’ve done well in European Open’s in the best. A close friend of mine Kennie Ferrie managed to win it in 2005 and I finished second so it would be good to bring it back to the north east.”
Pelle Edberg – 63 (-12 total)
“I’ve missed the cut the last two weeks but it still felt pretty good. Coming into this week I didn’t have the best confidence but I still felt it wasn’t far off and it was nice to shoot a god score today.  I’ve not been happy with my driver so I’ve changed a few things. As soon as I can get it in play I know I can shoot good numbers.
I hope this has given me a chance. I might be three or four back come tomorrow, but anything could happen.”
Jamie Donaldson – 67 (-11 total)
“It was a big patience test today. The early holes were tough. I looked at the leaderboard and saw everyone go berserk. The start is difficult too. If you get under par for the first eight holes you are in position to shoot a good score. I wasn’t quite in that position but I stayed patient, god a good birdie on eight and on the back nine the putts started to go in, so I’m happy with the day.
It’s great being in this position going into tomorrow. The course is great and the weather has been good, so I’m looking forward to it.”

US PGA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Jordan Spieth has a 66 but Henrik

Stenson maintains three-shot lead

FROM SKYSPORTS.COM

Henrik Stenson will take a convincing lead in to the weekend at the Tour Championship, where Jordan Spieth surged up the leaderboard.
Stenson's previous appearance at East Lake saw him lead from start to finish to win the FedExCup title and US $10m bonus to go with the tournament first prize of US $1.4m.
And the Swede remains on course to repeat the feat after a two-under 68 gave him a three-shot lead over nearest challenger Spieth, who pulled himself back into contention with a round-of-the-day 66.

"Any time you can maintain or extend your lead is always going to be a good day," Stenson said. "I did not feel like I played my best golf today but made some nice putts for birdies and kept it together pretty nicely."
Resuming two shots clear of Paul Casey after an opening round of 63, Stenson was able to double his advantage by the turn in difficult scoring conditions at a rain-soaked Atlanta.
Casey briefly moved within a stroke of the lead with a seven-foot gain at the first, only for the Swede to birdie two of his opening four holes.

Henrik Stenson looks to win the FedExCup for the second time in three years
Henrik Stenson looks to win the FedExCup for the second time in three years
After Stenson and Casey bogeyed the fifth, the Englishman lost further ground by double-bogeying the next after hooking his tee shot in to a water hazard.
That temporarily left Zach Johnson in second spot after the Open champion posted back-to-back gains at the seventh and eighth, only to run up a double-bogey seven and bogey the following two holes.
Gains at the ninth and 12th lifted Casey into joint-second alongside Spieth, who completed his bogey-free round with a 20-footer at the last.
A birdie on the 12th kept Stenson comfortably in front, although the Swede missed the chance to restore his four-shot cushion with a two-putt par from nine feet at the last.
Casey lies four shots off the pace after a blemish at the last, with Johnson a further stroke adrift despite closing his round with back-to-back gains.

Following a day of difficult scoring, Rory McIlroy is one of only eight players heading into the weekend under par despite an up-and-down 71, with Justin Rose back in the top 10 thanks to a two-under 68.
World No 1 Jason Day continued to stutter in his pursuit of a fifth win in just seven starts, carding a one-over 71 after following two dropped shots on the front nine with a wayward tee shot into water at the penultimate hole.
