McLeary and Russo tied at the top in Belgium

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Scotland’s Jamie McLeary felt right at home in the third round of the KPMG Trophy as a two under par 70 on a blustery day left him tied for the lead.
The 34 year old is level with Frenchman Charles-Edouard Russo on eight under par at Golf de Pierpont, with four players – Alexander Björk, Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez, Taco Remkes and Gareth Shaw – a shot back on seven under.
The scoring was notably higher on day three as gusty winds swirled around the Belgian venue, but McLeary took full advantage having learned his trade on the links courses of his home country.
“It’s just like playing links golf here so it suits me,” said McLeary, whose only Challenge Tour title came in the Scottish Highlands in 2009. “The changes in wind, the firm conditions. The bunkering is not as severe as we have in Scotland and the greens are a bit softer here, but apart from that it’s practically the same.
“If it’s as windy as this tomorrow, I know that two under will be up there. If it’s calm, it becomes a much easier course and I imagine I’ll have to shoot something in the mid-60s to win.
“The first three holes are good birdie, maybe even eagle, chances, and then it becomes a brute.
“After I played the fifth and the seventh so well – two really tough holes – I thought there was a score out there. But maybe I was concentrating on the hard holes too much, because I bogeyed eight which is an easy hole straight down wind.
“I’m happy enough. I know if I play well I’ll be there or thereabouts.”
Russo was delighted to see some hard work paying off despite a one over par 73 which included six bogeys, three birdies and an eagle.
“I’ve worked so hard on my game over the last 18 months or so and this week it has really felt like it’s starting to come together,” said the 34 year old.
“The start was okay and I was hitting the ball really well, but the wind picked up and it was really tough. I told myself to stay calm, and I had an eagle on the 11th and birdies on the 12th and 15th, so I was never nervous
“I knew with these conditions no one was going to shoot low. I like to play in this – you have to create shots and keep it low and sometimes take irons from the tee.
“Even if you’re playing well, in this weather you know you will make mistakes on some of the holes. I think today I always missed on the good side, so it was never disastrous.”
Overnight leader Remkes slipped to a 74, while the lowest score of the day came from Englishman Toby Tree, a 67 to move up to tied tenth, three shots off the lead.

Fowler in control at Close House
Australian Peter Fowler took a big step towards claiming back-to-back Senior Tour titles by moving four shots clear at the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship with one round to play.
The 56 year old, who won last week in Jersey, signed for a third round four under par 67 at Close House in north-east England to reach 11 under par overall, well in front of Englishmen Philip Golding and Carl Mason, who carded rounds of 66 and 70 respectively.
Fowler faltered with a bogey on the second hole, but came back in fine style with three birdies and an eagle before the turn on the Lee Westwood course. He traded two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine and was very happy with his day’s work.
“It was very good and it’s always good when you’re leading and can notch up another good round, it’s a big help,” he said.
“I’ve just got to play a little bit more solid than I did today and hit more greens. I didn’t hit many on the back nine and I need to consolidate that.
“I’ve played better this week than I did last week and I’ve proved to myself the last couple of weeks that you don’t have to play great to get the job done - you’ve just got to hang in there.
“It would be ideal to get an early score, but it doesn’t always work out the way you plan it. An early birdie would be a big help. I’ve just got to play the whole game and be patient. If it all falls together then that’s great.”
Mason admitted he made a tentative start – he was two over par at the turn – but recovered well and remains in contention to extend his record as the tournament’s most prolific winner.
“I made a very nervy putt for birdie at the first hole from three feet and it was the most awful stroke,” he said. “It unsettled me a little bit. Then I played a few scrappy shots after that and was struggling a bit
“I couldn’t putt and made some bad swings but I was pleased I held on and had a good back nine. I was watching Peter putt and I remember the days when I used to putt like that.
“I’ve just got to play and make a lot of birdies and hope Peter doesn’t go mad, but he’s full of confidence and on form and will be tough to beat.”

Rafa hot on Greg’s heels in Austria
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Grégory Bourdy saw his overnight four-shot advantage halved by Rafa Cabrera-Bello during the third round of the Lyoness Open Powered by Greenfinity at Diamond Country Club.
Bourdy appeared to be in an excellent position to claim his fifth European Tour title when, having resumed his round following a 95-minute lightning delay, he regained his four-shot lead on the back nine after an early Cabrera-Bello onslaught closed the gap to one.
The Frenchman's only blemish on the 15th - his first since his tenth hole on Friday – coupled with three birdies in four holes from Cabrera-Bello left him just one clear, but Bourdy managed to double that cushion with a fourth birdie on the 16th.
Cabrera-Bello, winner of this event six years ago, reached the turn in 31 courtesy of three birdies and an eagle in his first seven holes before the weather delay halted the Spaniard's momentum. When play resumed, he bogeyed the 11th and 14th, but fought back with consecutive gains on 15 and 16 to sign for a six under par 66.
Another player to suffer from the lightning delay was Chris Wood. The Englishman, having started his round with three consecutive birdies, was forced to take a penalty drop on the ninth when he fired his tee shot right into the trees and, after returning to finish the hole, could only register a double bogey.
Wood, who won a BMW i8 for a hole-in-one en route to a fourth-place finish at the recent BMW PGA Championship, responded by birdieing the next and last during a round of 70 that left him five shots off the pace.

Player Quotes
Grégory Bourdy – 69.201 (-15):   “It was another good round because it was difficult today, especially with the suspension of play so three under was a good score. After the delay the wind was a bit stronger which made it a bit more difficult but I think I did quite well at the end.
“I am in a good position – it’s always nice to be two ahead going into the final round, but it will be a tough day and I am sure it will be an exciting day playing with Rafa who is a great guy. I’ll relax tonight and have a nice dinner and get ready for tomorrow. ”
Rafa Cabrera Bello – 66 203 (-13):
“It was a really good day for me – I got off to an amazing start with a birdie at the first and then holing out for eagle at the third. Also making two birdies on the par fives – the 15th and 16th on the back nine – was really important for my confidence and to close the gap on Greg going into tomorrow.
“The eagle early in the round was a nice surprise and very funny because last night I had dinner with some of the Spanish guys and we were talking about how Miguel always holes out from the fairway and makes all these holes in one. I was saying how I never hole out from the middle of the fairway and then today I finally make one. There you go.
“I feel good about my game at the moment. The last few weeks have been good and I am happy with my game and what I am doing. I am aiming to peak during the best part of the season and I seem to be doing that which is great for tomorrow and great for the next couple of months.”
Chris Wood – 69. 206 (-10):  “The putt at the last was important and massively deserved because I just couldn’t seem to get the ball to drop having hit so many good putts. It was quite a frustrating day because of that – I hit a lot of good putts but they just kept lipping out. There is not much I can do about that apart from hit more good putts tomorrow and hope a few of them drop. I am still confident about my chances tomorrow. I need to go out here and try to post a low score and put some pressure on them – if I can shoot something close to 66 it might be enough.”

Koepka leads St Jude Classic at halfway
MEMPHIS -- Brooks Koepka is tuning up quite nicely for the U.S. Open at the event he added at the deadline.
Koepka, who had a share of the lead after the first round, shot a 3-under 67 Friday to lead the St. Jude Classic by a stroke after 36 holes. He turned in a four birdie-one bogey round for a 9-under 131.
"Playing solid golf, no mistakes, being very patient, waiting for my opportunities to come," Koepka said. "And when they have come, I've kind of taken advantage of them, but I still feel like I could be about 5, 6 under par ... Really haven't been firing on all cylinders, but good enough to be at the top."
Austin Cook (64) was at 132. The Arkansas native is playing his tour event after getting a sponsor's exemption.
"There's a lot of people here, and I'm sure lot more buying tickets right now to come tomorrow," Cook said after matching the best round.
TPC Southwind played firmer with temperatures in the 90s drying out the course, and that has greens playing faster along with some tricky pin placements Friday.
Koepka hit 14 of 18 greens for a second straight round and needed 28 putts Friday. The Floridian who won his first career title in February in Phoenix likes his chances going into the weekend as he tries to join Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Jimmy Walker as multiple winners on tour this season.
"I haven't blitzed the golf course yet," Koepka said. "You can shoot 8, 9 under in a round out here. I feel like the greens are so good, you put the ball in the fairway you really take it 8, 9 under. Being in the lead is nice, but would have liked to have been a few more under par."
Steve Alker briefly had the lead at 10 under with two holes to play only to finish bogey-double bogey. He had a 68-133 total and needed only 23 putts Friday as he got to 10 under with his sixth birdie of the round.
Alker said he picked the wrong club on the par-3 No. 8 where his tee shot landed short of the green leading to his second bogey of the round. Then he put his first three shots on No. 9 -- his 18th hole -- in the rough leading to double bogey.
The New Zealand native who now lives in Arizona said he wasn't aware he was the first to 10 under at TPC Southwind.
"It's a good thing it's not Sunday and finish two behind that would be bad," Alker said. "You have to look at the positives and say, `I've got two days left.' I've been swinging it pretty good and still learning the putter, so there's a lot of good things going on."
Chris Smith (67), Russell Knox (64) and Greg Owen (70) were among seven tied at 134. Ryan Palmer (71) shared the first-round lead with Koepka and Owen and was tied with three others at 135.
At one point Friday, as many as five were tied atop the leaderboard with eight having a piece of the lead at some point.
Koepka was tied with four others when he teed off in the afternoon and promptly birdied his opening hole to take the lead to himself. Koepka, who played at Florida State and joined the PGA Tour last year, took the lead back with consecutive birdies on Nos. 15 and 16.
He called his birdie on the par-5 16th a bit embarrassing after his attempted chip for eagle missed by 3 feet.
Phil Mickelson was tied with seven others at 137 after a 69. He spent some time on the range before his afternoon tee time, which helped him hit better shots both off the tee and with his irons. Mickelson said pin placements kept him from attacking the greens, but he agrees that this course can give up even a 7-under round to anyone making birdies.
"The swing is starting to feel a lot better," Mickelson said. "I feel a lot more confident on where the ball is going to go, and so hopefully I'll be able to put it together tomorrow and have a good round and get in contention."
Divots: Steven Bowditch and Retief Goosen were among those missing the cut at 1 over with 76 playing the weekend. ... David Hearn had his hole-in-one on tour on No. 4 with a 6-iron from 185 yards, and Hudson Swafford had an ace on No. 14 with a 9-iron from 169 yards. Hearn said this was his eighth overall and first since holing out on No. 8 here in a practice round with the same club. ... Kevin Chappell tied the course record with a 29 on the back nine with six birdies. He finished with a 64-135.

Europeans hit back in Palmer Cup four-balls

The United States took the advantage at the Palmer Cup on day one thanks to a dominant showing in morning foursome matches.
The U.S. won four of five matches in the morning, with Golfweek's No. 1-ranked player Maverick McNealy and partner Beau Hossler, of Texas, dropping the only morning match at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., for the U.S.
Going out first, Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans partnered with in-state rival Lee McCoy of Georgia to take a convincing 4-and-3 victory over Thomas Detry of Illinois and Hogan Award winner Jon Rahm of Arizona State, setting the tone for the U.S. team.
But the Europeans gained some ground in afternoon four-ball play, taking three of five matches, including a 4-and-3 win for Detry and Adrian Meronk of East Tennessee State over the American duo from Georgia.
Alabama's Robby Shelton and Vanderbilt's Hunter Stewart proved to be a great team, as they won both of their matches.

Monty trails leader Langer by nine shots
Bernhard Langer shot his second consecutive 6-under-par 65 Friday to extend his lead to four shots halfway through the Senior Players Championship.
Langer sank a 40-foot birdie putt on 16 in a round in which he hit 17 greens in regulation at Belmont Country Club. He's seeking to become the first repeat winner of the major event since Arnold Palmer in 1984-85.
Russ Cochran also shot 65 and sat alone in second place.
Steve Pate set a course-record with a bogey-free 63 that left him in a three-way tie for third and six shots back, with Lee Janzen and Jesper Parnevik.
Colin Montgomerie, winner of last month's Senior PGA Championship, carded a 71 and was nine shots back in his quest for a fourth major title in seven starts.
