Knox will make cut but Warren and Laird

prospects not bright in Zurich Classic

Russell Knox shot a 70 for a 139 halfway total in the US PGA Tour's Zurich Classic. The Inverness-born player was T45 when second-round play ended early because of  "inclement weather" .. even though the temperature was up in the 80s!
Presumably the threat of lightning in the area.
Marc Warren needs a very good inward half to have a chance of survving the cut. When play was halted he was lying T109 after an opening round of 72 and 39 for the first nine on his second circuit.
Martin Laird looks like missed the cut mark which will not be decided until all the second rounds are completed on Saturday morning (local time).
Laird has shot 75-69 for 144 and is T120.

Leishman goes low at Zurich Classic after wife's health scare

Golf has been far from the forefront of Marc Leishman's mind over the past few weeks.
Leishman, 31, missed the Masters as he attended to his wife, Audrey, who was fighting to survive an attack of toxic shock syndrome and acute respiratory distress syndrome in late March. Audrey was given a 5-percent chance of survival, according to the PGA Tour, but battled back and is recovering in Virginia Beach, Va.
“That was really tough,” said Leishman to the Tour. “I didn’t eat really for four or five days.”
But the one-time Tour winner is back on the course at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and while his mind is likely with his wife at home, his game is on point at TPC Louisiana.
The Australian went on a birdie binge during the second round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, making eight from Nos. 7-16 and 10 overall. Leishman was 10 under on the day with one hole to play, but he will likely finish his round with a bogey as he faced a chip shot for par when the round was suspended due to inclement weather.
"Hopefully, I'll hole out or get up and down for bogey," said Leishman to the Associated Press. "It was a good day, my expectations were pretty much non-existent this week.
"Today, I hit some good shots and holed some putts and all of a sudden you're 10-under."
Leishman is at 8 under overall after opening with a 74 at TPC Louisiana in Avondale, three shots behind co-leaders Boo Weekley and Hudson Swafford at 11 under.
Swafford came out of the gates early to card a 66 in the morning wave, and Weekley sits at 11 under with three holes to play in his second round. Play will resume 8 a.m. Saturday morning.
Swafford went bogey-free on the day, spacing six birdies out in the round of 66.
"(Heading into Bay Hill), I wasn't hitting it good or putting good. Nothing was clicking," said Swafford. "I changed my takeaway and my stroke with the putter. Ever since that, I've seen some good golf."
Five players are tied at 10 under, including Jason Day and Daniel Berger, who still have holes to play in their second rounds.
The cut line is projected at 4 under, with 83 golfers at that mark or better.

Whiteford climbs with a 66 but Saltman crashes to a 9 in Madrid Challenge

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Fifer Peter Whiteford shot one of the rounds of the day - a six-under-par 66 - to climb into a share of 14th place with a round to go in the Challenge Tour's event in Madrid.
On the same 207 mark is former Scottish amateur champion Andrew McArthur. They are seven shots behind the joint  leaders, Irishman Ruaidhri McGee and Spain's Naco Elvira on 176-under-par 200
Whiteford reduced the outward half to 31 shots - five under - with birdies at the first, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. He continued the birdie-fest after the turn with gains at the 11th and 15th.
He did not quite make it back to the clubhouse without a bogey - the only one popped out on him at the 17th. Whiteford's earlier rounds were 71 and 70.
McArthur has shot 67-72-68 and he will be cursing a sloppy start to the inward half which saw him bogey the 10th and 12th. Never mind, he had birdies at the first, fourth, seventh, ninth, 11th and 16th in halves of 32-36.
Elliot Saltman, the leading Scot overnight, fell down to joint 20th place with Ross Kellett on 208 after an extraordinary finish to what had been a very good card.
Saltman ran up a quadruple bogey 9 at the par-5 18th. Having shot six birdies earlier, he still finished with a 72 but his victory chance has gone. Kellett had a 71.
Jamie McLeary is joint 47th on 211 after a third-round 70 while George Murray has dropped to joint 53rd on 7212 after a 75.
Wallace Booth is tied 60th on 213 after a7

Irishman McGee shares lead with local hero

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Nacho Elvira will hold home hopes atop his broad Spanish shoulders entering the final round of the Challenge de Madrid as he carved out a narrow two stroke advantage, alongside Ireland’s Ruaidhri McGee, at El Encin Golf Hotel.

Elvira will have McGee for company in the final round as the Irishman continued to play well in Madrid, despite the added pressure of playing on a medical extension in the early part of the season.

The 24 year old is as laid back as they come, seemingly unfazed by his lofty position, and if he continues to play as he has so far – having signed for a 68 on day three – then he could well upset the home support with a maiden triumph of his own on Saturday.

“I started with a good birdie at the first, which settled me down a bit, and then I just parred my way round from there,” sad McGee. “It was really boring actually, just fairways and greens, until I got to nine and made a birdie.

“The back nine was pretty similar apart from a couple more birdies, so 14 pars and four birdies was pretty solid. I definitely left a few out there, and I’m going to go now and put a little practice into my putting, and work on that for an hour or so and I should be OK.

“I just need to approach it the same as every day and see what happens. There is no point building it up to something really big, or you won’t be able to play properly, so I’ll just chill out and play it by ear.”

 Two potential buyers for Gleneagles

 hotel and golf resort

From GolfBusinessNews.com
Following the February announcement that Diageo, the owners of Gleneagles – the luxurious Perthshire hotel and golf resort that hosted the 2014 Ryder Cup – had appointed property firm Jones Lang LaSalle to look for potential buyers, word is that there are two bidders in the running.
One is said to be KSL Capital Partners, the US-based firm which owns The Belfry (among many other properties), but, as yet, the other bidder is unknown.
This is not the first time that Diageo has been said to be considering offers. A few weeks ago a spokesperson was reported as saying, “Gleneagles is one of the UK’s finest luxury hotels and one of the world’s most fantastic golf resorts. We are sure there are many people who would love to own Gleneagles and have received numerous expressions of interest over the years, and particularly since the Ryder Cup. As you would expect, we have a duty to consider such interest carefully.”

Aberdonians' contrasting fortunes in China Open

Ramsay (68) is T10 but Lawrie (78) misses cut

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Julien Quesne continued his rich vein of form to establish a one-shot lead over his fellow Frenchman Alex Levy and America’s Peter Uihlein heading into the weekend of the Volvo China Open.
Quesne, who finished in a tie for fourth in Shenzhen last Sunday, carded a five under par round of 67 at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club, in Shanghai, to reach eight under par for the week.
Levy, who romped to a four-shot maiden victory in this event 12 months ago before picking up a second title in Portugal, had a makeable putt for what would have been a seventh birdie of the day to reach ten under par on the 14th hole, but having missed it then made a couple of errors over the closing holes.
After driving into a bunker at the 16th, the 24 year old hit his approach into the water en route to a double bogey six.

He also dropped a shot at the short 17th having again found sand from the tee, but did pull one back with a gain at the last for a round of 68.
Quesne had romped to the turn in 32, before getting up-and-down from a bunker on the par five 13th and pitching to four feet at the next as the pace of the morning starters was blown away on a calm afternoon.
Uihlein saved the best to last, pitching in for eagle from off the 18th green to sign for a round of 67 and a seven under par aggregate total.
SCOTSWATCH: Richie Ramsay celebrated his choice as European Tour Player of the Month for April by shooting a 68 for 140 and a T10 position at halfway, four off the pace. But fellow Aberdonian Paul Lawrie had a nightmare day with a 78 for 151, missing the cut by five strokes.

Apart from Ramsay, two other Scots will play the final two rounds. David Drysdale is on 144 (75-69) and Craig Lee on 145 (70-75).
Scots who missed the cut along with Lawrie were Scott Jamieson (148) despite an excellent 69 - 10 shots better than he had in Round 1 and Chris Doak 159 (78-81)
Key quotes
Julien Quesne: “Today was a little easier, because there was less wind. But I also played much better today, so that was the main reason for my good score. I felt very comfortable and hardly missed any shots, so it was a very good day all round.
“My performance last week definitely helped build my confidence, so I felt good at the start of the week and I’m still feeling good now. But there’s a long way to go.”
Alex Levy: “It was another very good day for me. I played very solid and enjoyed the day, except for the 16th hole, where I made a stupid mistake. But I made a nice birdie on the last, so I’ve already forgotten about the 16th. There was no wind today so it was much easier to control my distance, and my iron shots were very good.
“I’ve really enjoyed myself so far, so I hope that can continue. I don’t want to think about my game too much, just be natural. Fairways and greens, that’s all. If I can hole some putts, maybe I will have a chance. I hope so.”
Peter Uihlein: “I hit a great drive down 18, but then pulled my two iron approach a little left of the green. I kept changing between my 54 and 60 degree wedge, finally went for the 60 and nipped it perfectly, it went in at the proper speed so it was a great way to finish.
“I’ve gone for pretty much all of the par fives in two so far this week, apart from the 13th where I tried laying up and ended in a divot, so that was a sign not to try that again! But the greens are so small and undulating that it’s very difficult to find the right spot. You can see from the scoring that it’s a very tricky course.”

Day 2 in numbers
15 – Difference in strokes between Felipe Aguilar’s first and second rounds. The Chilean opened with an 80 and bounced back with a 65 on day two to comfortably make the cut on one over par.
146 – The cut mark, which equals the highest of the 2015 season.
67 – Number of players who made the cut.
4 – Number of Frenchmen in the top ten.
