Field of 94 for NE Alliance at wet and misty Cruden Bay

Hutcheon wins with an eight-under 62

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Greig Hutcheon, pictured, won today's North-east Golfers' Alliance conpetition at Cruden Bay with a brilliant round of eight-under-par 62 which earned him £140. It was worth a lot more!
In miserable wet and misty weather, the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre player headed a good field of 94 players by five shots.
North-east Under-18 boys match-play champion two years ago, Stephen Roger, playing over his home course, was runner-up with a 67 and three players - Terry Mathieson (Murcar Links), Kevin Duncan (Cruden Bay) and Greg McBain (Paul Lawrie GC) - were joint third on 69.
With play off mats mandatory, Hutcheon's score could not constitute a course record but it was a marvellous round from the Tartan Tour's leading money-winner for the past few years.
He had a terrific start - par, par, eagle and reached the turn in seven-under 29 with further birdies at the fifthj, sioxth, eighth and ninth. A bogey at the seventh was taken in his stride.
Hutch cooled off a bit after the turn with birdies only at the 11th and 13th and a second bogey, at the 14th in a second nine of one-under 33.

Young Roger, pictured right, had halves of 34 and 33, birdieing the second, eighth, ninth, 10th and 13th, offset by bogeys at the seventh and 12th .
By my calculations, Hutcheon and Roger had a better ball of 60!
It is the time of the year when we remember the late North-east Alliance secretary with the Ron Menzies Memorial Trophies which were won by Hutcheon, former P and J editor Harry Roulston (Stonehaven) who equalled his age with a 73 for a net 66 off seven in Class 1, and Gary Homer (Northern) with a net 63 off 11 in Class 2.
