US SURIVES NAIL-BITING FINISH TO WIN PRESIDENTS CUP BY ONE POINT

Incheon, South Korea: The United States won the Presidents Cup by one point against the International Team on Sunday, with the captain’s son and pick Bill Haas securing the winning point against home hero Sangmoon Bae in the final singles match on the 18^th green.

The 11^th staging of the biennial team match-play contest, held in Asia for the first time, went down the wire in front of large galleries at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club, South  Korea with Haas notching a thrilling 2-hole victory which gave the U.S. Team a 15.5 to 14.5 win, which was its ninth in the series and sixth consecutive success.

It was indeed a day of high drama which saw some stunning matches leaving the outcome of the Presidents Cup on tenterhooks.

The Internationals secured some big individual wins, with Marc Leishman edging a one-hole win over world number one Jordan Spieth , fellow Australian Adam Scott trouncing Rickie Fowler 6 and 5 and Hideki Matsuyama beating J.B. Holmes by one hole with a birdie on 18.

Branden Grace emerged as the star for the Internationals with a 2 and 1 win over Matt Kuchar giving him a perfect five wins this week. But with the Americans gaining wins through Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Chris Kirk and Zach Johnson and with half points from Patrick Reed and Bubba Watson, it all came down to the last tie between Haas and Bae.

The local hero, who was an International pick, produced some gutsy shots, including par save on 16 from eight feet and a wonderful bunker shot on 17 to stay one-down. Needing to win the last hole, it ended in disappointment for the Korean star, a former Asian Tour multiple champion and a double winner on the US PGA Tour, as he fluffed his third shot to allow Haas to win the hole and match by two holes

American Captain Jay Haas said: “It was pretty uncomfortable at times but the guys stepped up and played amazing golf when they had to. And we couldn't have done it without a group effort. There were no individuals; everybody came together as a team; a moment I'll never forget.”

Bill Haas added: “All of a sudden it's on me, or my match is big - it's going to matter. I was certainly hoping that those ones that were down or all-square, I would have loved for it to work out. But last night I had said something to Zach about how, ‘Man, I hope you guys go out and take care of business before it comes down to me.’

“And he says, ‘You want that. That's what you want. You want to be in that position and you should go get it.’ It feels really amazing now the way it all worked out. I'm lucky to be a part of this team and to get picked, and I'm just happy I could help the team out with one point there on Sunday. It feels great.”

International Captain paid tribute to his 12 men, especially Bae and India’s Anirban Lahiri, whose three foot putt on the last green lipped out for a half point with Kirk which could have then offered a different ending.

“For it to come down to just a couple of shots at the end of the day on Sunday make for incredible theatre,” said Price.

“I don't want any of you to be negative in any way toward Anirban and to Moon. The truth of it is, is that if we got off to a better start on Thursday and we had not been 4-1 down, it might not have been quite as exciting today. But we had five rounds of golf, and so we all feel for Anirban and for Moon for what happened. But they are part of our team, and we will leave here as a team.”
