Bradley
Dredge has moved into the driving seat in the hunt for a third European
Tour title. The Welshman carded a second successive five under par 66
to move one shot clear at the midway point of the M2M Russian Open.
The
42 year old’s faultless second round got off to the perfect start when
he birdied the tenth, his first, before back to back birdies at the 12th and 13th meant he picked up three shots in his opening four holes.
He followed that up with further birdies at the 18th
and the third to move to a ten under total, one shot clear of
Englishman Lee Slattery – who struggled with dehydration and faintness
throughout his round but still managed a four under 67 for a nine under
total.
Daniel
Gaunt was a shot further behind on eight under par after the Australian
registered a two under par 69, while Argentina’s Estanislao Goya,
Spaniard Pablo Martin Benavides and Englishman Ben Evans were all tied
for fourth place on seven under heading into the weekend.
Meanwhile,
Andrey Pavlov made history at Skolkovo Golf Club as he became the first
Russian to make the cut at a European Tour event, a two under par 69
taking him to level par for the tournament to make it on the mark.
There are two Scots in the leading 10 - Scott Jamieson and Craig Lee.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Bradley Dredge (66, -5; -10 total)
“I’m
delighted, back to back 66s and no dropped shots so I’m very pleased
with that. The pin positions are the course's main defence and they were
quite tough today, you had to be careful going into the greens.
“I
found the greens to be absolutely perfect today, I got the speed and
got the lines spot on and I putted great today. If I could get two more
rounds of 66 that would be tough to beat but it’s only halfway through.
I’m in a great position but a long way to go.
“For
me the highlight has been the putting, I’ve been putting really well.
If I can keep that going and improve my iron play a little bit then
that’ll be good for the weekend.”
Lee Slattery (67, -4; -9 total)
“I
had a really strange day on the golf course today. I hit two good shots
into the first and stood over the putt and just felt a bit dizzy, which
was really strange. I managed to hole the putt and then the next couple
of holes I tried to eat a bit of food and see how I was and it got a
little worse – I started to see a few dots in front of me.
“I
was really a little bit worried at that stage so I called for the
doctor and it turned out Tjaart van der Walt, who’s a good friend of
mine and who I was playing with, gave me a couple of drinks and said, as
long as you get some sugar into you you’ll be fine. So he gave me a
couple of drinks and it helped me big time.
“It
started to pick up a little bit on the back nine and all of a sudden I
had a bit of a sugar rush so I went a little bit faint again. It’s one
of the most bizarre days I’ve had on a golf course but fortunately I was
swinging it well and it didn’t affect my golf much.”
Daniel Gaunt (69, -2; -8 total)
“I
got off to a decent start again today, hit some good shots early on,
and then on my back nine – the front nine – it just stalled a little bit
and I found the pin positions pretty tough. If you missed them on the
wrong spots there was a run-off so I was a little bit cautious. I’m in
good position for the weekend though.
“The
greens were a bit slower, especially on the back nine I found the grain
came into play a bit more. I had to give them a bit of a whack, so they
were definitely softer after the rain and you could go at the pins, but
at the same time you had to be cautious.“I’ve been most happy with the way I’ve stuck in, patience really, playing one shot at a time. I didn’t drive it too great on the back nine, got a bit quick at times but they're a few things I can go out and fix on the range, no big deal. One shot at a time is key for this week.” SECOND-ROUND SCOREBOARD par 142 (2x71)
