McKenna steals some limelight from leader

Scott with course record of nine-under-par 62

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Nairn's Sandy Scott maintained the pole position in the Scottish
Under-18 boys' open stroke play championship at Royal Burgess Golfing Society's Barnton course in Edinburgh today.
But he had to share some of the Day 2 spotlight with another Northern competitor, Fintan McKenna (pictured left).
The Royal Aberdeen player shaved a shot off the 12-year-old amateur record with a brilliant round of nine-under-par 62 - a staggering 16 strokes better than his first-round 78.
McKenna's score  for the parkland course has never been bettered. even by the pros! Kenny Walker set the professional record of 62 back in 2004. The amateur record of 63 was shared by three players and dated back to 2003.
He had one eagle (at the par-5 16th), eight birdies, at the first, third, sixth, seventh, eight, ninth, 12th and 18th in halves of 29 (six under par) and 33. McKenna's only bogey came at the 13th.
The Balgownie junior member shares fifth place on 140, six behind Scott who leads by three after rounds of 65 and 69. The Nairn prospect has not had a single bogey in 36 holes.
He birdied the fourth and 16th in Round 2 - the rest of the holes he parred. You cannot get much steadier than that!

Northerners really did steal the show in the second round.
Stephen Roger (Cruden Bay), pictured, last year's North-east District boys' stroke and match-play champion, shot a 65, which included eight birdies and two bogeys. Coupled with his first-round 72, Roger is in second place on 137.
