PGA EuroPro Tour Final Qualifying School

Craig Lawrie shoots a 67, Michael Lawrie

reaches last 32 at Scottish boys' ch/ship

While Paul Lawrie was watching his younger son Michael reach the last 32 of the Scottish boys championship at, Craig, the elder offspring of the 1999 Open champion, was shooting a first-class, five-under-par 67 to be sharing second place - two off the pace - at the first round of the PGA EuroPro Tour Final Qualifying School at Frilford Heath Golf Club, Abingdon in Oxfordshire, writes Colin Farquharson
Craig Lawrie played to perfection - not a single bogey - as he birdied the long fourth, fifth, short sixth, long eighth and long 15th in halves of 32 (four under par) and 35 (one under).
The field will be cut from around 250 to the leading 80 after the second round and Lawrie should not lack Scottish company in the decisive third round.
Nairn Dunbar's Gavin Hay (69), Michael Paterson (Kilmacolm) (70), Alyth's Mark Rae (71) and Paul Robinson (Largs) (71) were other Scots who got under the par of 72 at the first attempt.
Hay had a bag of six birdies in halves of 34-35. He had gains at the second, sixth, eighth, 11th, 13th and 14th
A bogey-bogey finish robbed him an even better start.
North-east Alliance champion John Duff (Newmachar), playing as an amateur, has a lot of ground to make up after opening with a 76.
That was one shot better than Lloyd Saltman (Archerfield)
Saltman had double bogey 6s at the 12th and 14th in halves of 37 (one over) and 40 (four over).
He did birdie the fourth, 15th and 17th but had single bogeys at the first, ninth, 13th and 18th.
Past Scottish amateur champion Zander Culverwell (Dunbar), playing as an amateur, had an 81
Culverwell had a triple bogey 7 at the par-4 fifth and double bogeys at the short fourth and the par-4 13th in halves of 42 (six over) and 39.
He had three birdies - second, sixth and 14th.
Single bogeys at the eighth, 12th and 16th.
Welshman Gareth Wright (West Linton) started very well with a 68 to be tied sixth.
