McILROY SHARING SECOND PLACE, SCOTT IMPROVES

Chalmers breaks into the lead with late birdie

West Australian Greg Chalmers will take a one shot lead into the weekend of the Emirates Australian Open being played at The Australian Golf Club.
Greg ChalmersIt was a congested leaderboard toward the end of the second round but a birdie on the 18th hole pushed Chalmers clear into the lead.

Starting the day at even par, Chalmers fired a 5-under 66 to earn his place at the top of the leaderboard.

"I felt really good about what I'd been trying to do and how I struck my irons compared to yesterday," said Chalmers.

"I did some hard work yesterday afternoon and this morning and that gave me a lot of confidence."

"I felt like I had a nice rhythm to my swing after that, and it was just a case of maintaining that and seeing if I could get some good results out of it."

Chalmers has maintained a gruelling schedule having been to five countries since playing the ISPS HANDA Perth International in October.

"I don't feel jet lagged, it's just my sixth event in a row and I'm trying to converse my energy," added Chalmers.

"Ironically, the more birdies I make, it seems to be the more energy I have, so that's always a good thing."
Chalmers is a two time champion at the Emirates Australian Open but World Number 1 Rory McIlroy lurking just one shot behind.

"I think it's very early to be talking about winning given who's right behind me and who's playing very well, very early to be thinking about what's going to happen on Sunday night."

McIlroy had a mixed round, with just one par on the back nine to finish at 2-under 69 for a two round total of 4-under the card.

"I felt like I had an opportunity today to maybe shoot a good one and put a little bit of space between myself and the rest of the field but it didn't really pan out that way," said McIlroy.

"I had six birdies and an eagle today.  You eliminate the bad stuff and the bogeys and all of a sudden you turn that into a low score."

"I was happy with how I finished obviously, I was 4-under for the last five holes and came back well and still in a good position going into tomorrow."

Joining McIlroy tied second on the leaderboard are Adam Crawford (NSW), Todd Sinnott (am)(VIC) and Conrad Shindler (USA).

Overnight leader Jordan Spieth had 1-over 72 today and is tied 6th on 3-under the card with Brett Rumford and Geoff Drakeford who is making his Professional debut this week after Monday qualifying for the tournament.

Rounding out the top-10 on 2-under the card are six players including World Number 3 Adam Scott.

SYDNEY -- Twice former champion Greg Chalmers has a chance to make it three after taking a one-stroke lead into the weekend at the Australian Open.
Chalmers shot a second-round 66 over the par-71 track for a five-under 36-hole tally of 137.
Big-name attractions Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott weren't far behind on a tough day for scoring.
Defending champion McIlroy played in difficult afternoon conditions at the Australian Golf Club but he persevered for an up-and-down 69 to be in a group tied for second.
McIlroy only had only one par on the back nine -- the 10th. The others, from the 11th, went birdie, bogey, bogey, eagle, birdie, bogey, birdie, birdie. He also birdied the ninth with about a 70ft putt, but also found water hazards  on two holes for bogeys.
"I felt like I had an opportunity today to maybe shoot a good one and put a little bit of space between myself and the rest of the field, but it didn't really pan out that way," McIlroy said.
Chalmers had seven birdies in his second round to move to 5-under 137 after 36 holes.
"It seemed to move around a little bit and change direction," Chalmers said. "Sometimes you think you should be downwind and because you've turned in a certain direction you're actually into the wind. I think I changed clubs two or three times on shots."
Scott and American Jordan Spieth played together in calmer morning conditions and Spieth (72) is in a group tied for sixth, two behind leader Chalmers. That group included former Australian amateur Geoff Drakeford, who is playing his first tournament as a professional.
"I think the greens were certainly testing us," Scott said, "but I'm getting to understand the slopes on the greens and especially around the edges.
" I've hit a lot of wedge shots that have been a little mis-struck and then spinning off the greens. I guess that's got to do with the pin positions as well. So getting it very close to the hole is not that easy. I think the greens have to be the defense because there is no rough."
Scott, who moved from potential cut to contention with a 66, is three strokes off the pace on 140
"Yesterday I got off to a bad start, and I didn't scramble well when I had to and it started to get away from me," Scott said. "Today a couple of good shots coming up 14 and I made an eagle and momentum is on your side."
After two rounds, there were only 16 players under par.
Spieth had to call for a rules official on the par-3 fourth hole when a marshal stood on his ball, but neglected to tell him when he got to the green.
Members of the gallery informed Spieth, and after he took a drop, the American fluffed his chip and missed his putt for par. On the way to the next hole, he flung his ball into a creek.
His round ended well with birdies on his last two holes, but that wasn't enough to make it a good day for Spieth.
"It was a struggle, big-time struggle," Spieth said. "I wasn't hitting it well. If I wasn't putting well I may have shot 45 on the back nine.
"I just didn't find the ball-striking until the last few holes and then was very fortunate to grab a few birdies. I was really looking at making 4s and getting in and regrouping for tomorrow. But instead I kept myself in the tournament."
Aberdeen-born Michael Sim, who became world No 1 amateur as he grew up in Australia, missed the cut by one shot with scores of 75-72. Sim has never been able to recover the form he had previous to a lower back injury a few years ago.

ANOTHER PRESTIGIOUS ACCOLADE FOR AMERICAN

BROOKS KOEPKA WINS CHALLENGE

TOUR GRADUATE OF YEAR AWARD

EUROPEAN TOUR NEWS RELEAS

After a stunning breakthrough season on the European Tour which culminated in a maiden victory at the Turkish Airlines Open, Brooks Koepka (pictured, without the beard he has now grown) has added another prestigious accolade by winning the 2014 Challenge Tour Graduate of the Year award.
The American becomes the second winner of the award, which is presented to the highest-ranked player in The Race to Dubai to have graduated from the Challenge Tour the previous season.
Koepka’s remarkable rise to world prominence began in 2012, when the Floridian opted to follow in the footsteps of his compatriot and close friend Peter Uihlein by beginning his professional career on Europe’s top developmental tour.
It did not take long for him to make his mark on the Challenge Tour, winning once in the 2012 season before three victories in the 2013 campaign – in the Montecchia Golf Open, the Fred Olsen Challenge de España and the Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts – earned him automatic graduation to The European Tour.
The 24 year old continued his rapid progress to the highest echelons of world golf this year with a top five finish in the US Open Championship and a top 15 finish in the US PGA Championship, before claiming his maiden European Tour title at the Turkish Airlines Open.
Koepka’s eighth place finish in The Race to Dubai means he has inscribed his name alongside that of the inaugural Graduate of the Year Award winner, Justin Walters of South Africa, with Englishman Tyrrell Hatton his closest challenger to the title in 2014

ESSEX PAIR WIN PGA PRO-CAPT GRAND

FINAL IN SUNNY TURKEY

PGA NEWS RELEASE
Jason Levermore completed the first leg of a potential Turkey treble after lifting the Golfplan Insurance PGA Pro Captain Challenge trophy with Channels Golf Club, Essex captain Neil Hutchinson today.
Levermore (above right), who will compete in the Titleist PGA Play-Offs and the PGAs of Europe International Team Championship over the next two weeks, and Hutchinson (above left) sizzled in the Mediterranean sunshine at Antalya Golf Club.
Having established a three-shot overnight lead in the Canopius- supported event, the Essex pair were irresistible and they scorched the greens and fairways of the PGA Sultan Course with an impressive display of golf carding a seven-under-par 64.
It eased them to 12-under for the tournament and five-shot winning margin over Ashburnham’s duo of Martin Stimson (pro) and Martin Hale, who did their utmost to pile on the pressure with a closing round of five-under 66 to move to seven-under.
But there was never any doubt the title would be going to Essex, with Levermore capturing his third national title having been a two-time winner of the PGA Four-ball Championship.
Levermore, who picked up a cheque for £5,000, said: “We just played nice and steady early and I know I had six birdies in the first 15 holes. Hutch had a nice net birdie at 16, a birdie at 17 and then we dropped our only shot of the round on the last.
“This is massive for the club as they don’t play many of these events. This is the first year we’ve played the pro-captain and all the members have been behind us with lots of messages of support.
“Hutch has played really well. He’s been steady throughout and you can guarantee he’s going to get some birdies here and there. We work nicely together.”
Hutchinson, whose reign of captain is coming to a close, said: “I feel incredibly privileged as this has been fantastic. I can actually say I’m a PGA winner and that’s a bit special.
“For the club it makes a statement for the club and puts us on the map a little. What a perfect way to finish off your year as captain. It’s superb.”
He continued: “Jason was incredibly good today and it’s just been a pleasure to be here. The sponsors have done a fantastic job, the PGA have organised it well and the course is superb.”
Levermore now has 24 hours to recharge his batteries ahead of teeing off in the Titleist PGA Play-Offs, again over the PGA Sultan Course, before the ITC event at Gloria Golf Resort next month.
Scotland's representatives, Garry Forrester, director of St Andrews Golf School, and St Andrews Golf Club captain Mike Cordiner finished seventh on 143 with rounds of 70 and 73.
Forrester earned £1,900 of the total pro prizefund of £25,000.

LEADING FINAL TOTALS

ENGLAND ORDER OF MERIT WINS

 FOR CHESTERS AND BOYD

Double European champion Ashley Chesters and international Sarah-Jane Boyd are England’s top golfers for 2014, each winning their respective England Golf Order of Merit.
Chesters (Hawkstone Park) was catapulted to top spot in the Titleist/FootJoy men’s Order of Merit when he was crowned European champion for a record second successive season.

Meanwhile, Sarah-Jane Boyd (Truro, Cornwall) sealed her win in the Ascot Golf ladies’ Order of Merit with a fine run of form in the second half of the season, claiming two second places and two thirds, before turning professional.
Chesters, 25, finished the year as England’s most successful male player by a wide margin. “Winning the Order of Merit obviously means I had a good year,” he said modestly.
“I’ve looked at who has won it previously and there are some great players so it is a good title to have won.  Obviously the highlight was winning the European title again but I also had a lot of top five finishes."
At one stage it seemed that Chesters might win the Brabazon at Seaton Carew but he had to settle for joint second spot in the end while fifth place finishes in the Welsh and Portuguese championships boosted his tally.
Although it didn’t earn him any points, Chesters also won all four of his games in the international with France and five out of six in the Home Internationals. He missed the cut by a stroke in the Open Championship but his European win earns him exemption to next year’s event at St Andrews.
Sarah-Jane Boyd, 23, missed out on the 2013 Order of Merit title by a handful of points, but she was a comfortable winner this year. She said: “It was a goal to try and go one better this year, so it’s nice to win. It shows you have played consistently throughout the year.”

She was runner-up in the English mid-amateur and the British stroke play – a title she won in 2012 – and was third when defending the English amateur and also third in the English open stroke play.
“I was knocking on the door for all of them and winning the Order of Merit has topped everything off nicely,” she said. In addition she helped England to win the women’s Home Internationals, taking 4.5 points from five matches.
Sarah-Jane’s next big date is the final qualifying school for the Ladies European Tour. “I’ve learned a lot from being in England Golf squads and it’s brought my game on. Now I’m looking forward to taking that into the pro ranks and hopefully improving and getting better.”

PROSPEROUS PITLOCHRY GC AGREE TO SECURE

FUTURE OF STRUGGLING BLAIR ATHOLL

 NEWS RELEASE
Pitlochry Golf Ltd has concluded an operating
arrangement with Blair Atholl Golf Club which will
secure the future of the latter, a closure-threatened
community outfit.
The three-man team of Stephen Carruthers, Richard
Drummond and Jon Erasmushave transformed the fortunes
at Pitlochry Golf Club in the past five years,
growing membership by 25 per cent and overseeing a
state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence.
Now, after being approached by officials from
neighbours Blair Atholl Golf Club, they have agreed
to step in and help the struggling outfit.
The club at Blair Atholl has been an integral part of
the community since 1896 and its James Braid-designed
nine-hole course attracted 450 members only two
decades ago.
However, falling and ageing membership, plus
recession placed it in financial difficulty and the
membership of 110 could no longer sustain a viable
future.
That led to an approach, three months ago, from
Secretary Ian Rattray and Captain David Morrison to
the directors behind Pitlochry Golf Club’s
resurgence.
And, following a vote of approval from members at
both clubs, Pitlochry Golf Ltd will now operate both
Pitlochry and Blair Atholl clubs from January.
The directorial team will assume operational
liability at Blair Atholl and also have investment
plans for the clubhouse and catering.
Membership will entitle golfers to play and enjoy
facilities at both clubs and the deal will create up
to four new full-time jobs at Blair Atholl.
Welcoming the deal, Club Captain David Morrison, who
joined the club as an 8 year old, 47 years ago, placed its importance in context.
“I think, if we had stayed the way we were for another two or three years,we would have to close the doors forever, which would have been a huge
tragedy,” he said.
“This has secured the future of the club and I am very excited about it.
“We saw what the guys had done at Pitlochry so we approached them, they were enthusiastic and here we are. I’d love to see the clubhouse packed
again like it used to be, for golfers and locals alike because the club is
part of the community.”
The deal, blessed by an 83-1 EGM vote, will see the existing Blair Atholl Golf Club committee continuing to run competitions and events.
Pitlochry Golf Ltd, however, will operate the clubhouse and course.
Pitlochry Golf Ltd directors believe their business model could return the club to viability in three years.
“The first aim, obviously, is to ensure Blair Atholl
has a long-term future,” said Director Jon Erasmus.
“We will work with the membership to create a commercial entity that, in time, can stand on its own two feet because this is a vital community resource.
“Pitlochry Golf Club was in a relatively similar circumstance five years ago but we have managed to employ more people, build an Academy and we are
now developing the golf course, which will continue.
“In terms of value, members will have access to two golf courses, two clubhouses and they can play all the competitions and all the medals, for the
same cost. There are few other clubs in Scotland where this is the case.”
Fellow Director Richard Drummond outlined some initial investments plans for Blair Atholl, with officials impressed by the work of Head Greenkeeper, Stuart Griffiths.
“The course is in very good condition and we’d like this to be known, firstly, as the best 9-hole course in Perthshire.
“What we are aiming for is moving to a more consistent food and beverage product and developing the clubhouse. What is clear to us is that the locals want something back for the community because this is an important
asset to them.”
