EUROPEAN MEN'S CLUB TROPHY CHAMPIONSHIP GRAND FINAL AT PRAVETS

 GLENBERVIE GO FOR GLORY IN

BULGARIA (October 23 to 25)

NEWS RELEASE FROM SGU
Glenbervie next week seek to become the first Scottish club in 20 years to land the European Men’s Club Trophy in Bulgaria.
The Stirlingshire club are flying the flag on European soil, having come through qualifying in some style at the TSG Scottish Club Championship last month.
Defending champions Glenbervie held off a strong challenge from Blairgowrie to retain the Club Championship crown at Lundin, becoming the first club since Cowglen in 1988 to successfully defend the title.
They now head for Bulgarian venue Pravets (23 – 25 October) bidding to emulate the only previous Scottish winners of the event, Kilmarnock in 1994 at Vilamoura GC. The event has been played since 1975 with Portuguese club Aroeira winning on home soil 12 months ago, ending a run of three French victories.
Scotland international Graeme Robertson, this year’s Scottish Amateur Championship silver-medallist, teamed up with Glenbervie club-mates Fraser Moore and Richard Johnston to record a two-under par winning total for victory at Lundin.
Over two rounds of stroke play, with the two lowest scores from each round counting towards each team’s aggregate score, Great Britain & Ireland team member Robertson was the hero, following up an opening round four-under par round of 67 with a level par afternoon 71.
It was the 30th staging of TSG Scottish Club Championship, with each of Scotland’s 16 Area Associations holding a qualifying event to determine their leading club, with 48 players lining up at Fife layout Lundin to contest the title.
Due to work commitments, Robertson can’t travel to Bulgaria, with 2013 Scottish Boys semi-finalists Ben Craggs stepping in to join Moore and Johnston. Craggs was leading Glenbervie’s individual Club Handicap Order of Merit to secure his place.

STENSON v BLIXT IN ALL-SWEDISH

QUARTER-FINAL
Top seed Henrik Stenson has set up an all-Swedish quarter final against Jonas Blixt after a spectacular victory over Thongchai Jaidee on day three of the Volvo World Match Play Championship.
The World Number Five will face his compatriot Blixt, who overcame Paul Casey at the first extra hole, after topping the Arnold Palmer Group courtesy of a 2 and 1 win over last year’s beaten finalist, Jaidee.
Stenson closed the game out in typically stylish fashion at London Golf Club, holing his second shot on the 17th hole for an eagle which his Thai opponent was unable to match.
Joost Luiten is the only player with a 100 per cent winning record in the field after he came from three down to beat the defending champion Graeme McDowell two up.
The Dutchman will take on Spaniard Pablo Larrazábal in the quarter finals after the Spaniard saw off Irishman Shane Lowry.
The quarter final line-up is completed by Patrick Reed and George Coetzee, and Victor Dubuisson and Mikko Ilonen.

Key quotes

Henrik Stenson
"I probably played a little bit better the first day than yesterday, but the back nine was good yesterday and today was pretty nice, as well.  I got off to have a good start, but he was always hanging in there.  Every time he missed the green he got up and down, and I had to make birdies to win holes which you kind of expect.  I was playing nicely and he came back but I returned the favour on 17, so it was nice to not have to go down the last."

Joost Luiten

"It's always hard when you're three down after eight, but you know you have ten more holes so you just try to get back on your game and hit some good shots and win some holes back. Luckily that happened for me today."

CHALLENGE TOUR EVENT TAKES TWO DAYS TO COMPLETE ONE ROUND

 SHANKAI CLASSIC CUT TO THREE

ROUNDS - FIRST ROUND CUT TO

LEADING  50 AND TIES

Two days were required to complete the firstsg round at the inaugural Shankai Classic presented by IDG, but upon the completion of 18 holes at Chongqing Poly Golf Club, it is Paul Maddy and Mark Tullo who have streaked four shots clear of the field at seven under par.
Just 15 minutes of golf was possible upon the resumption of play on Friday morning before poor visibility called a halt to proceedings once again, and after a delay of five hours and 45 minutes, it was decided that the tournament would be shortened to 54 holes.
In the knowledge that the cut would also come after the first round, and limited to the top 50 players and ties – with those in the top 60 also earning prize money – there was no doubt in the player’s minds as to what was required on Friday afternoon.
Already six under through his first ten holes, Maddy picked up where he left off on the second day to post one final birdie at the par five 18th and sign for a 65, a score matched by Tullo thanks to a scintillating five under par score on the front side.
The Chilean has struggled throughout his career with a bad back, and after an MRI and a course of anti-inflammatories, he has started to feel a little closer to his best as he makes one final push for his European Tour card.
Tullo readily admitted after his round that the stop-start nature of the opening 18 holes definitely helped him manage his injury, but with uncertainty still surrounding the weather and how many holes will be possible over the weekend, he will hope to continue the fine putting form that has put him in such a strong position so far.
“I played amazing on the front nine and only shot two under,” said the man at eighth on the European Challenge Tour Rankings. “I could have shot way under there, but the putts weren’t falling. Then I kept on playing great after the delay, overnight and then this morning, but putted amazing!
“The putts were falling left and right. I was hitting good iron shots, and didn’t miss a fairway or green, but it was the putting on the front nine that was amazing. I made five birdies there and it could have been more, but I holed some long ones today, and in these conditions the greens are tricky and I was just draining them.
“I’ve been playing pretty good lately so it is nice to see a good score, and I’ll try and continue the good play tomorrow and I’m pretty excited. It doesn’t matter how many rounds we get in, I’ll try and shoot my best score and we’ll see what happens.”
As for Maddy, who only got the call to come and play last Saturday morning, he was very pleased to continue his form of the previous day on a week that could yet define his season.
The 33 year old has never finished higher than a tie for sixth on the second tier, which came at last season’s Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts, but he is in position heading into the weekend to do much better than that, and with a US$3,500,000 prize fund this week, a career-best finish could well put him in contention for a rookie season as part of The Race to Dubai next year.
“It feels like we have been out there a long time,” said Maddy. “To shoot seven under though is great, and I did not expect that with the weather we had yesterday, but I got off to a great start holing my second shot at the third with a rescue from 215 yards, and just carried on the momentum from there really. There were a couple of good par saves in there too, but I holed some good putts, and that’s about it.
“I slept well last night, but to pick up this morning was a little awkward with it being so stop-start, and it would have been nice to start and finish it off, but we weren’t able to. So we were in the club house for a while, but to get back out after that was nice, and I hit some good shots without making any birdies.
“My thought process before I started was that because of the weather I have to play every round like it is the last one we are going to play in this tournament, to take advantage where I can, and have fun really. This is the first time I have been up in this position, so I just want to try and enjoy it.”
Both Maddy and Tullo are four clear of a chasing quartet in third at three under par, a group that not only includes Edouard Espana and Antonio Hortal who finished their first rounds on Thursday, but also three-time European Tour winner Johan Edfors and Denmark’s Lasse Jensen who both matched their score of 69 today.
There are a further nine players just one shot further back in a share of seventh, with Björn Åkesson, Julien Guerrier, Joakim Lagergren, Chris Paisley, Nicolo Ravano and the leading Chinese player Hu Mu, joining a trio of players who posted the same score yesterday – namely Cyril Bouniol, Alvaro Velasco and Pontus Widegren.
Byeong-hun An was the highest ranked player in the field coming into this week, but the man at fourth on the Rankings carded a triple bogey seven at the fifth to miss the qualifying mark by a single stroke.
Home hopes will look like being carried by Mu over the final two rounds, but he will be joined by ten of his compatriots in the chase for Challenge Tour glory.

FOUR SCOTS MAKE THE CUT IN HONG KONG OPEN

 BIRTHDAY BOY ELS CELEBRATES BY

TAKING A TWO-STROKE LEAD

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Ernie Els celebrated his 45th birthday by cruising to the top of the leaderboard at the Hong Kong Open after a second round 65 at the Hong Kong Golf club saw the South African move to nine under and into a two stroke lead over Frenchman Raphaël Jacquelin and the Australian duo of Scott Hend and Cameron Smith.
Els, making his first appearance in the Hong Kong Open, began his second round on the 11th hole and in typically effortless style moved through the gears to birdie six of his first 11 holes to surge ahead of the field.
At that point, Els was producing a vintage performance but saw his momentum crash to a halt after a poor decision to attempt to drive the fourth green which resulted in a sloppy bogey.
“The fourth hole was a bit of a bummer – a bit of a mental error on my part because I probably didn’t need to go for it – but I feel like my game's right there,” said Els, who opened the week with a four under 66 on Thursday.
“When I'm on I'm playing nicely at moment. I feel really good about my ball-striking and I'm putting nicely so hopefully I can keep that going over the weekend.”
Els, like so many of the world class players who have played at the Hong Kong Golf Club since the tournament’s inception in 1959, has completely fallen for the iconic Fanling venue.
“I love the golf course and I love the old style golf that we play here,” he smiled. “It’s just a classic lay-out and a great golf course. The greens are great too, so if I'm on tomorrow we'll try and shoot something low. I'm really happy with the way I've started this tournament – I've got a good chance of having a good day on Sunday.”
Of the trio tied for second place, Smith had the best round of the day, matching the 65 of Els to join Jacquelin and Hend on seven under.
The Aussie could have been at least tied for the lead had a few more of his birdie chances sank below ground level, but he was pleased with the overall performance as he continues the fine form that has seen him register four top ten finishes on his last four Asian Tour starts.
“I started with four in a row, hitting it really well and putting really well,” said the 21 year old. “After four holes, you're still getting into the round, so I just tried to keep doing what I was doing.  Hitting fairways I think was the key to a good round today and I am pretty happy with where I am.
“Obviously the quality of players I think this week is a little bit different to a normal tournament because The European Tour guys are here.  So sort of stepping up a level is nice, stepping up to some of the best guys in the world and competing against them is a good change.”
Hend has competed around the world at every level of the game and he is looking forward to try and chase down one of golf’s true greats over the weekend.
“It's a good start to the week,” said Hend. “It will be cool to try to chase down Ernie over the weekend and hopefully hole a few more putts, and who knows? I haven't been playing very well of late so I am trying to change that around. I have been working hard on it and there are some promising signs.”
Jacquelin carded a three under 67 to move into contention. He said: “I've been playing well this week and I know the course pretty well. It can be tricky but you've got a lot of birdie chances if you put the ball in play off the tee.
“So that's makes a really big difference if you can be in the fairway because you've got some short irons to the greens, but if you are in the rough, you can get a big flyer and it's difficult to putt it on the green.”
With the halfway cut coming in at one under par, any of the 66 men remaining (excluding defending champion Miguel Angel Jiménez, who failed to recover from a bout of food poisoning and struggled to a two over par finish) in the field can win over the weekend.
But Els will be hoping to build on his excellent first two rounds and continue to move away from the field as the four-time Major Champion looks to join so many of the game’s great names on the Hong Kong Open trophy.
