HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNAN COUNTY NEWS ROUND-UP

 CENTENARY ALEXANDER TROPHY

WON BY GLENBERVIE

In 1914, Alexander’s Stores in Falkirk provided a huge trophy to be contested by Golf Clubs in Stirlingshire and Clackmannanshire. This was well before the formation of many County Associations and incidentally the Scottish Golf Union.  The first competition was held at Falkirk Tryst with the home club running out the first winners of the trophy.
Now, 100 years later, the event returned to Falkirk Tryst, but this time the home Club had to settle for third place.  Regretfully, the event has lost some of its status, and quite a number of Clubs do not participate.
The 2014 winners were Glenbervie Golf Club who won by three shots from Kilsyth. With three out of four scores over 18 holes, needed to decide the winners, it was Colin Mundie (71), Mark Hislop (71) and Ben Craggs (79) who did the business.   Best scratch score of the day came from Hugh Nelson (Kilsyth) with a 70.
Alloa were  the best of the local clubs, finishing fifth of 12. With three scores counting out of four, it was Ian Ross (74), Ian Guthrie (77) and John McLaren (78) who topped the four Clackmannanshire entries with an aggregate of 229 Alva, a recent winner of the event, finished a shot behind on 230, Tillicoultry a bit further back on 245, and sadly with more than one NR, the good work done by two of the Braehead team (scoring 72 and74) was all in vain.
Regretfully there were no teams forward from Dollar and Tulliallan.
