Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie), joint second at the halfway stage, has a three-shot leeway to make up on German leader Hurly Long if he is to add his name to the list of Scots who have won the prestigious Lytham Trophy down through years.
McDonald stepped up a gear from an opening round of 73 with a two-under-par 68 for a 36-hole tally of one-over 141. He birdied the fourth, eighth, short 12th and 18th - bogeys at the third and 17th - over the Royal Lytham and St Annes course that is an Open championship venue.
Hurly Long, the only men in the star-studded field to be under par after 36 holes, is on 138 after a pair of 69s for 138
Alongside McDonald on the 141 mark are South African Thriston Lawrence (72-69) and Harry Casey (Enfield) (71-70).
Other Scots to beat the cut are Blairgowrie's Bradley Neil (75-71) and Scott Gibson (Southerness) (74-72), both on 146, Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon) on 147 (75-72), Dunbar's Alexander Culverwell on 148 (76-72) and Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) on 149 (74-75). Robertson was a top-10 finishers last year.
Scott Borrowman (Dollar) missed out by a shot with 74 and 76 for 150.
