RORY ENTERS PGA CHAMPIONSHIP, MAY 22-25

McILROY TO PLAY IN AT WENTWORTH
NEWS RELEASE
Two-time Major Champion Rory McIlroy is targeting The European Tour’s flagship event as the next addition to his glittering CV after confirming his participation in the 2014 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club, from May 22-25.
The Northern Irishman, one of the most exciting talents in the game, has been steadily returning to his best form, with three top ten finishes in five European Tour appearances so far in 2014, including finishing runner-up in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
He will now hope to convert that into silverware when he joins the world class field over the famous West Course next month, as the BMW PGA Championship celebrates its 60th anniversary.
McIlroy aims to succeed Italian Matteo Manassero as champion of the €4,750,000 event, with the former World Number One bidding to add his name to an illustrious group of fellow Major winners who have captured the prestigious title, namely Tony Jacklin, Sir Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam and José María Olazábal.
“The BMW PGA Championship is always one of the highlights of the year and it is a title we are all keen to win,” said McIlroy, who won the US Open in 2011 and US PGA Championship in 2012.
“I’ve been a little hit and miss at Wentworth in recent years, but I think this year my game is in much better shape going into the tournament, so I’m feeling confident about my chances of performing well there.
“With it being The European Tour’s flagship event, it is a big week for everyone involved and there is always a great atmosphere.
“Some of the greats of the game have won the title over the years and it would certainly be nice to join them on the Championship’s 60th anniversary.
“Wentworth always kicks off the golf season in Europe, leading up to The Open Championship, and hopefully a good performance there can launch a successful summer for me.”
McIlroy is the latest star attraction to confirm his participation in the BMW PGA Championship, joining players including four-time Major Champion, US Open Champion Justin Rose, Ryder Cup hero Ian Poulter, two-time runner-up Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Race to Dubai winner Henrik Stenson.
Tickets for the BMW PGA Championship are still available, with advanced prices valid until May 19 at tickets.europeantour.com or on 0800 023 2557.
