GOLF SCHOLARS - A WEBSITE WINDOW ON US SCHOLARSHIP RECRUITMENT

NEWS RELEASE
Golf Scholars, the global website for US scholarship recruitment, has been the talking point amongst young golfers over the last couple of weeks. With 43 coaches already signed up, player members are taking advantage of the platform to build their profiles and search for colleges that suit their academic and golf requirements.
The platform works by providing players with the opportunity to take ownership of their own profile page. The profile is unique to each player and acts as a promotional page. It is here that academic information, swing video, player image, a personal statement and a number of other indicators are uploaded.
Each player also has their own stats program, where they can upload the competitive rounds they play. From the rounds played, 20 golfing stats are produced and presented on the player’s profile. Coaches can then search profiles and contact players that fit their academic and golf program requirements.
Players can also contact coaches at colleges they are interested in attending.
The college recruitment process has numerous strands and Golf Scholars has provided comprehensive information about the process, even down to helping the player plan when to take the required tests depending on their desired enrolment date.
The website has been built with member security as its key fundamental. All college coaches who become members are vetted to ensure they have joined the site legitimately. Players can also only view college profiles and no player can view other player profiles.
In addition, no member emails are visible on the website.
In depth help information is available to assist players at all times
Membership is for 1 year from date of full registration, although Golf Scholars is currently providing 2 years for the price of 1 as a loyalty offering for members who sign up before the 2nd of September 2013. Even without this offer, the pricing philosophy has been put in place to ensure it is a young golfer’s academic and golfing ability that gives them the opportunity to gain a scholarship, not financial resources.
An “Info for Parents” page is available on the homepage in order to answer any questions they may have. Gavin and Liam can be contacted at info@golfscholars.com or via the contact form at www.golfscholars.com

DANTHORP GRABS SHARE OF LEAD IN ROLEX TROPHY CHALLENGE

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Jens Dantorp will aim to follow in the footsteps of his friend Kristoffer Broberg and keep the Rolex Trophy title in Swedish hands after grabbing a share of the lead on the third day in Geneva.

Dantorp posted a flawless round of 66 at Golf de Genève to move to 16 under par alongside the in-form Portuguese José-Filipe Lima, who had signed for the same score earlier in the day.

Having turned in 34 courtesy of birdies at the 12th and 17th holes, the Swede added further gains at the first and second, where he sunk a 25-footer across the green. After picking up a further shot at the fifth hole, Dantorp holed another huge putt at the eighth for his sixth and final birdie of the day.

He said: “The only time I was in any trouble was on the third hole, where I hit a great bunker shot to get up and down for par. Other than that, I played very solid golf. I made a lot of chances so could have gone even lower, but I also holed two big putts so I can’t really complain too much.

“I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but of course it would be great to win after Kristoffer’s victory here last year. I travelled a lot with Kristoffer last year, so I got to know him better and it was amazing what he achieved. I don’t think I’m going to get close to his winning score [of 26 under par] – that was something special.

“Depending on the weather, I think 21 under will probably win the tournament – although 20 under may be enough. But whatever happens tomorrow, I feel like I’ve turned a corner this week, which gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season. I haven’t hit the ball any better but my focus has been so much better, so hopefully I can climb into top 15 of the Rankings and stay there.”

If he is to capture his debut Challenge Tour title, Dantorp will need to fend off the attentions of Lima, who has eyed another luxury timepiece to add to his watch collection.

Lima already has two Rolex watches in his 12-strong collection, but is in prime position to add a third after moving to 16 under par with a round of 66.

Both the winner of this week’s limited-field tournament and the player posting the lowest round receive a brand new watch courtesy of the sponsors, meaning Lima has two chances of winning one of the highly-prized timepieces on what promises to be an exciting finale to the elite €228,000 event.

The 31 year old, currently second in the Challenge Tour Rankings, said: “I played similar to yesterday, although the conditions were probably a bit easier. I didn’t hole that many putts, but I hit a lot of good shots so I’m really happy with the way I’m playing.

“My all-round game is just very solid at the moment, I’m probably playing the most consistent golf of my whole career. I’m making much less mistakes than I used to – of course I still hit a bad shot every now and then, but even when I do I don’t miss by that much, which makes it easier to recover. I’m also hitting the ball further with my irons and my distance control is also better now, so I feel very comfortable out on the course.

“Of course I don’t want to think too far ahead because this game can change so quickly, but if I can keep playing the way I have, I would be confident of finishing the job tomorrow. I don’t really have a target in mind – my main focus is to try to beat Daniel Gaunt’s lowest round [of 62 on the first day] so that I can win the Rolex, because I love watches.”

Spaniard Adrian Otaegui is in third place on 15 under par after shooting a round of 66 which included eight birdies. Local hero Damian Ulrich shot the lowest round of the day, a 65 to climb to fourth place on 13 under par, one shot ahead of Denmark’s Thomas Norret (69) in fifth.

GONZALEZ GLIDES INTO LEAD AT GLENEAGLES

FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Ricardo Gonzalez fired a second consecutive 65 over the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles to charge into the halfway lead at the Johnnie Walker Championship.

A sensational run of seven birdies in eight holes ensured the big Argentinean a one stroke lead over Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger, with the English duo of Tommy Fleetwood and Mark Foster a further two strokes back heading into the weekend.

Gonzalez revealed after his round that he would dearly love to collect a fifth European Tour title to dedicate to his mother, father and father-in-law, who all passed away in the past two years.

“The last two years have been very difficult for me personally. I lost my mother and father last year and then my father in-in-law passed away last week so it would mean a lot for me to be able to win for them and to dedicate it to them.

“It would take a lot of pressure off me to be able to do that because it feels to me the right thing to do.

“I am feeling good on the golf course. I don’t think I have ever shot 65 two days in a row and everything has been working well. I suppose everything has to work well to make two scores like this.

“I am excited about the weekend and trying to keep doing exactly the same things as I have been doing for the past two days. If I can do that then I have a great chance to win again.”

Wiesberger, who has returned to Gleneagles for the first time since he was part of the five man play-off to decide the winner in 2011, when Thomas Björn took the title.

In the two years since that disappointing end to an otherwise great week, Wiesberger has matured into one of the most promising talents in world golf, winning twice in Korea and Austria.

Asked if would take a final score of 22 under par after his second round 66, the 27 year old replied: “No, I can go lower than that. I'm trying my best to improve all the time and it is getting better with every step of the way.  I had to learn the tough way – losing here in a playoff a couple years ago, I tried to feed off that, and the last couple years have gone pretty well.”

DANIEL GAVINS WINS EUROPRO TOUR £10,000 PRIZE

 NEWS RELEASE
Daniel Gavins moved into the top five of the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit with his maiden victory on the tour, shooting a superb final-round 63 to win the HotelPlanner.com Championship by three strokes at Dale Hill Golf Club in East Sussex.
The 22-year-old, based at De Vere Oulton Hall in Yorkshire, was seven under for his final round and finished the week 12 under par. Dave Coupland came second on nine under to move to the top of the Order of Merit, with Oliver Farr third, four off the lead.  Gavins wins £10,000, a brand new Motocaddy trolley and £500 to spend at HotelPlanner.com.
He had finished in the top ten three times previously this season, with his win pushing him to third on the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit.
“I went out today trying to keep in my process with every shot,” he said. “My back nine was terrific, to hole those putts as I did was amazing.
“To be honest I don’t remember much of that back nine but when I finished I was told I shot 29 for the back nine and I didn’t realise that at all. I stuck to my game and tried to keep it going. Fairways and greens was my aim for the last few holes.
“I have had a few top tens this year and I have been playing solidly so it is really nice to get the first win on the board. Mentally it was tough, especially on the back nine, but I tried to stay in the zone and stay calm.
“This win is very important, it has got me up to the top five on the Order of Merit so if I can keep going and have a few good finishes I should do well this year.”
Gavins’ impressive final round included an eagle on the 11th and six birdies, with his only blemish a five on the sixth.
Second-placed Coupland (Sharp Sports Golf Management), who won at Mar Hall two weeks ago, now leads the Order of Merit. His final-round 65 comprised five birdies and 13 pars. Farr (Worcester Golf & Country Club) shot 66, four under, in his final round to end the week eight under.
Highlights of the HotelPlanner.com Championship will be broadcast on Sky Sports HD during the week commencing September 2.

ENGLISH BOYS' COUNTY FINALS PREVIEW

Counties set for a repeat performance in English Boys County Finals
There will a touch of déjà vu about the English Boys County Finals when they are played at Kedleston Park in Derbyshire on 27th – 29th August as all four regional winners are the same as last year.

Devon, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands, Staffordshire and Yorkshire, will do battle as they did at Cotswold Hills a year ago when Yorkshire came out on top. That was their sixth success in the championship while they shared it with Essex in 2004.

The other three counties will be hoping to win the title for the first time. But both Hampshire and Staffordshire will be missing some key players.

Devon, the South West qualifiers, will be making their third successive appearance in the finals and will want to improve on last place in 2012. Their squad includes one of that line-up in Jacob Tinsley, who dropped just half a point from his six games.

Tinsley has also been selected to play for England in their annual schools international against Scotland at West Kilbride next month as has Harry Konig, another of the Devon team. The south west champions also include brothers Robbie and James Thompson along with Tom Trowbridge, sixth in the Douglas Johns Trophy. Devon won the south west qualifiers by two strokes at Weston-super-Mare.

The Hampshire squad is missing the services of Harry Ellis, the 2012 English champion, and fellow boy international Jack Singh Brar. But it includes three youngsters from the Isle of Wight including Ryan Harmer, who played all four rounds of the English under 18 Championship for the Carris Trophy.

Tommy Donaldson is the only member of last year’s line-up, while the team also includes Josh Oddy, the county’s under 16 champion, and Billy Watson, son of former European Tour professional Scott Watson. Another I o W member, Jordan Sundborg, played in four rounds of the McGregor and Carris Trophies. Hampshire, IoW & CI won the South East qualifier by three strokes at Studley Wood.

Staffordshire, the Midlands winners, will miss their boy champion Richard Mansell, who has left for college in the United States. But they have England boy cap Robert Burlison, who shared first place in the Brabazon Trophy Northern Qualifier and has enjoyed several top ten finishes this year.

Also in their squad is Daniel Sutton, sixth in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters in June, who also played last year along with Cameron Long, an under 16 international, and Harrison Quirk.

Sutton was also capped by England Schools for their international with Wales this week at Lytham Green Drive, helping the team to a 10-8 victory and beating the Welsh captain in the singles. He also won the Faldo Series event at Hollinwell. Staffordshire won the Midland qualifier by 16 strokes at Whittlebury Park.

Defending champions Yorkshire (Image copyright Tom Ward) include two boys from last year’s victorious team, Ben Brewster, their boys captain, and Jonathon Thomson, winner of the North of England boys under 16 Championship last year and third in the 2013 Fairhaven Trophy.

Kealan Lowe, like Thomson, is on England squad training, while the team also includes Ben Hutchinson, the Leeds boys’ captain and cousin of Denny Denison, a former Yorkshire county player and now a European Tour professional.

In the Northern Group boys qualifying, Yorkshire tied with Cheshire but went through on countback on the better respective sixth players’ score.

In the draw for the first round of matches on Tuesday the 27th, Devon will play Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands while Yorkshire meet Staffordshire.

NEWS AND SCORES FROM THE ASIAN DEVELOPMENTAL TOUR

PRESS RELEASE

AIRIL STAYS IN THE HUNT AT THE PGM TERENGGANU MASTERS

Terengganu, Malaysia, August 23: Airil Rizman of Malaysia stayed in the title hunt at the PGM Terengganu Masters when he posted a third round one-over-par 72 to share the lead with Grant Jackson of England on Friday.

Jackson battled to a 68 to tie with Airil, who held a share of the lead since the opening day, on nine-under-par 204 at the RM200,000 (approximately US$65,000) Asian Development Tour (ADT) event.

Malaysia’s Shaaban Hussin, Sweden’s Malcolm Kokocinski and Man O IM of the United States recorded rounds of 68, 67 and 68 respectively to share third place at the Awana Kijal Golf & Beach Resort.

Australia’s Nabil Abdul was a further shot back while Indonesia’s Rory Hie and Japanese duo Takuya Yamauchi and Mitsuhiko Hashizume tied in seventh position on 207.

Darren Tan of Australia, the co-leader for two rounds, slipped back to tied 10th place after shooting a 76.

Airil is determined to rediscover the magic in his opening two rounds as he aims to win his first ADT title.

“I played badly. I struggled with the distances. Hopefully I can regain my good form tomorrow,” said the Malaysian, who has won once on the Asian Tour in 2007.

Jackson, who is currently fifth on the ADT Order of Merit, is hoping to secure his second victory this season.

“I hit pretty nicely today. I drive well for a solid round. Scoring was tough today as it was quite windy. It got a little tricky too,” said the 31-year-old Englishman.

“I am looking forward to the final round tomorrow as I’m in a good position right now,” added Jackson, who marked his card with four birdies against one bogey.

Shaaban of Malaysia posted two birdies in each half but wobbled on the last hole when he dropped his only bogey of the day.

“I had a good round apart from the bogey. In fact, I’ve been playing consistently for the past two rounds as well. Hopefully I can play well on the last day,’ said Shaaban.

The top three players to finish on the ADT Order of Merit at the end of this season will receive Asian Tour cards for 2014.

All ADT events receive Official World Golf Ranking points, which will be used to determine the field for the World Cup of Golf in Melbourne in November and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Winners on the ADT will receive a minimum of six world ranking points while the top six players and ties will earn points based on a sliding scale.

For more information on the ADT, please visit www.asiandevelopmenttour.com.
