JOHN HENRY ONLY SCOT TO SURVIVE IN AUSTRIA

John Henry (Clydebank and District) was the only Scot to survive today's second-round cut in the Alps Tour's Gosser Open at Johann Erzherzog Golf Club, Austria.
Henry made it with nothing to spare after a double bogey at the 15th put him under
pressure. He shot 70-73 for one-under-par 143- nine shots behind the joint leaders,
Brendan McCarroll (Ireland) (68-66) and Austria's Martin Wiegele (66-68).
Fraserburgh's Kris Nicol  (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) missed out by five shots with scores of 72-76 for 158.
Michael Stewart from Troon shot 74-76 for 150 and Ellon's Ross Cameron (Saltire Energy) totalled 151 (78-73).

CRAIG LEE SHARING SECOND PLACE AFTER THREE ROUNDS ON MADEIRA

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Mark Tullo is in pole position to claim a maiden European Tour
title as the Chilean edged into a one-shot lead after an intense
battle of wits in the third round of the Madeira Islands Open –
Portugal – BPI at Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra.

The Santiago native (pictured by courtesy of Getty Images(c)
played in the final group alongside
the second-round leader Craig Lee
and American Peter Uihlein, who
carded a stunning 64 on the second
day to move into contention, and the
lead was exchanged back and forth
between the three throughout
the day.
In much more favourable conditions
at the spectacular Madeira
venue, Tullo got straight into the mix from the off as a birdie at the
first hole elevated him to the top of the leaderboard alongside Lee.
A bogey from the Scot at the second meant Tullo jumped into
the outright lead but it was only a brief sojourn as Lee
proceeded to birdie the next two to regain the lead.
Tullo carded a fourth birdie of the day at the 14th to move back
into a share of the lead before he seized the initiative with another at the par three 17th, thanks to a difficult birdie putt from 10 feet
which rolled in for a four under par 68.
That moved the two-time Challenge Tour winner one shot clear of
both Lee and Uihlein on 12 under par and he was delighted with
his round.
“I played really good today,” he said. “I had a good back nine and
the putter worked pretty well for me.
“I hit 17 greens for the third consecutive day and that’s the key on
this golf course. I had one bad drive which resulted in a bogey but
I'm really happy with the way I'm playing, shot-by-shot and
day-by-day.
“There will be no different strategy here tomorrow, I just want to
hit the same shots and do the same things and we’ll see what
happens.”
All three of the players in an identical final group on Sunday have
recent experience of being in contention on the final day, but are
still waiting to enter the winners’ circle on The European Tour.
At the Open de España in April, Lee entered the final day two
shots off the lead but fell to a 78, while Uihlein and Tullo were in
with a shout of winning the Tshwane Open and Africa Open,
respectively, before both settling for top five finishes.
Lee is glad to be back in contention in a European Tour
tournament and thinks he will have learned from his
disappointing final day experience last month.
“I'm still playing very well so as long as I keep striking it like that
I've got a good chance and hopefully I can roll a few in and see
what happens,” said the 34 year old, who signed for a two under
third round of 70.
“I don’t feel under as much pressure after Spain, I’ll be a little bit
easier on myself and I know what I need to do now when I get into
this position. I just have to keep doing what got me here.”
Uihlein, meanwhile, could not quite live up to his heroics on Friday
- when he briefly threatened a 59 after negotiating the opening 12
holes in ten under par - but a three under par third round 69 was
enough to keep him within touching distance of a maiden
professional title.

BIRTHDAY BOY GREG TIES WITH CHRISTOPHER AT BUCHANAN CASTLE

Aberdeen-based Greg McBain, pictured above, celebrated his 29th birthday in some style today (Saturday) by collecting a £1,042 prize for tieing for victory with Christopher Currie (Caldwell) as the leading pros in the Buchanan Castle pro-am.
McBain and Currie both shot six-under-par 64s, finishing two shots ahead of the field.
Greg, who represents Aberdeen golf store Gamola Golf on the Tartan Tour, posted his score with a superlative run of seven under par for his last 14 holes, during which he birdied the fifth, long sixth, short 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th and 15th.
Earlier he had bogeyed the second.
Currie proved that he too could be hot stuff when he returned a bogey-free cad with birdies at the short fourth, long sixth, short 10th, long 14th, 17th and 18th.
The team award went down to a card countback between two teams who both returns net 55s - Craig Matheson (Falkirk Tryst) team and that led by Montrose Links tour pro Graeme Brown.
Matheson's team won the countback. His amateur partners were Stewart McNeill (handicap 18), Colin McNaught (handicap 14) and Mark Blair (handicap 17).

JAMIESON OUT, McDOWELL AVENGES 2012 DEFEAT BY COLSAERTS

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Graeme McDowell went some way to avenging his Volvo World Match Play Championship final defeat bu Nicolas Colsaerts of 12 months ago by despatching the Belgian in the quarter-finals at this year's championship at the Thracian Cliffs and Beach Resort in Bulgaria.

The Northern Irishman, pictured, who was also beaten by Colsaerts in the same event in 2011, vanquished his Ryder Cup team mate on the 17th hole to record a 2 and 1 victory and book a semi-final date with South African Branden Grace, who defeated Englishman Chris Wood by the same score.
McDowell’s match with Colsaerts was a classic match play affair with the Ulsterman going one down after three holes but fighting back brilliantly to establish a three-hole lead at the turn.
Colsaerts then produced one of the tournament’s lighter moments on the tenth hole as he pulled his drive left of the green into a lateral hazard. His ball entered the hazard by flying over an on-course toilet, meaning the Belgian had to go through the process of literally dropping his ball on the toilet floor in order to adhere to the rules of golf.
From there, Colsaerts was given ‘relief’ from the immovable obstruction, allowing him to drop his ball outside the hazard, from which point he made a sublime up and down for the unlikeliest of par fours.
“It certainly gave a new meaning to the phrase ‘nearest point of relief,” laughed McDowell after the match. “Nicolas actually made an unbelievable up and down there and then he started to come back at me strong.
“It was classic match play where I was the guy in the lead and went a little tentative while he had nothing to lose and could afford to be aggressive. But I got the job done and I suppose there was a little element of revenge in there after him beating me twice in the last two years in this tournament.”
McDowell would love to add his name to the Volvo World Match Play trophy.
“It's a trophy with so many legendary names on it,” he said. “I think back to the golden years around Wentworth, watching a lot of my heroes winning this great, great tournament, and I'd dearly love to add my name to that list.”
The other semi-final match will see Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, conqueror of Scott Jamieson by 4 and 3, go head-to-head with South African Thomas Aiken after their respective semi-final wins over Peter Hanson and Shane Lowry.

FIFE, LOTHIANS, STIRLINGSHIRE, GLASGOW QUALIFYING AT WEATHER-HIT AREA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

FROM THE SGU WEBSITE
Host Area Fife will battle it out with Lothians, Stirlingshire and Glasgow for the GolfKings Scottish Area Team Championship title after leading the stroke play stage of the weather-shortened qualifying round at Crail Golfing Society today.
As winds gusted at over 40mph, combined with driving rain, SGU organisers were forced to reduce the event to one round of qualifying and abandon this afternoon’s play, with the two best scores from each course (Balcomie and Craighead) counting for the team’s qualifying total.
That left Fife, the 2011 champions, as leading qualifiers from the 16 Areas with a total of 294, two shots clear of title record holders Lothians. Stirlingshire made it through in third place on 299, while Glasgow edged out Clackmannanshire by a single shot on 306 to seal the fourth semi-final berth.
Scottish Boys Championship runner-up Ewan Scott produced the morning’s best round, firing an excellent one-under par 69 on the shorter Balcomie Links, while Glasgow’s Jamie Savage and Lothians’ Neil Henderson both carded two-over par rounds of 74 to lead the scoring on the tougher Craighead links.
Scott, who admitted he was lucky with the draw teeing off in the first group at 7.30am in the slightly more benign conditions, was delighted with his side performance in his Area Team Championship debut:
“The draw certainly helped us as we were all out early, although we still went out and played good golf. Conditions weren’t too bad for the first 7 holes of my round, but the wind started to pick up by the 14th tee, although I managed to play the last five holes in one under including chipping in for a 2 at the last.”
Team-mate Ally Hain produced a fine 70, with former SGU Order of Merit No 1 James White battling to a three-over par 75 on the Craighead to secure the Fife’s team place in the semi-finals, where they’ll face Glasgow.
Lothians, whose last title win was back in 2007, had fine rounds from Anthony Blaney and Allyn Dick, 71 and 73 on the Balcomie, while Benn McLeod’s 78 counted alongside Henderson’s excellent effort on the Craighead course.
Stirlingshire, bronze medallists 12 months ago, reached their second successive semi-finals withlast week’s Irish Amateur Open runner-up Graeme Robertson leading the way with a one-over par 69 on the Balcomie. Ryan Campbell’s 75 also counted, with Stuart McMehen’s 77 and Fraser Moore’s 78 helping their team through to the match play stages.
Scotland boy international Savage was Glasgow’s best performer, while Conor O’Neil survived two triple bogeys to record a 74 and keep his Area in the hunt for their first Championship since 1991.
Last year’s SGU Order of Merit winner Scott Borrowman gave Clackmannanshire hope of a semi-final spot with a fine 69 on the Balcomie, but they had to settle for fifth spot, two shots clear of Renfrewshire and North East, while defending champions Perth and Kinross fell at the first hurdle, well down the field in 11th place.
SGU Events Manager Daniel Sommerville explained the decision behind reducing the qualifying to one round: “Conditions became extremely challenging for the later starters with balls moving on the more exposed greens and forecasts for worsening weather this afternoon. We felt the decision was the most equitable way of deciding the qualifiers with two scores counting from each course and hopefully we’ll have better weather for the match play tomorrow.”

RAIN FORCES SUSPENSION OF PLAY IN AREA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

North-east team at Crail before the rain came on. Back row (left to right) Barrie Edmond, John Duff, Clark Brechin, Bryan Innes. Front row: Adam Dunton, Anthony Bews.

Play has been suspended at the GolfKings Scottish men's area team championship at Crail Golfing Society.
Torrential rain has caused excess water on the courses and the SGU officials made the decision to call the players back to the clubhouse and suspend play in the stroke-play qualifying round which is designed to produce four areas to go forward to Sunday's match-play stages.
North-east team captain Mike Pocock had to make a change in the line-up before the start of play. Graham Gordon was ruled out with a back injury and Clark Brechin (Murcar Links) was drafted in.

AUSSIE GRIFFIN TAKES OVER LEAD IN TELEKOM OPEN IN SOUTH KOREA

NEWS RELEASE
JEJU ISLAND, South Korea: Australian Matt Griffin stayed on course for a second OneAsia title in less than a year with an even-par 72 today that gave him a one-shot lead going into the final round of the U.S. $900,000 SK Telecom Open on South Korea's Jeju Island.
After two days of perfect weather, a stiff wind and late afternoon rain played havoc with the field, and only 10 players broke par around the 7,361 yard Pinx Golf Club course.
Griffin, a winner of the Charity High1 Resort Open in September, stands 13 under for the tournament -- a stroke clear of Korean veteran Kang Wook-soon, whose 67 was the day's best round.
China's Hu Mu (73) and Koreans Lee Ki-sang (72) and Park Do-kyu (74) shared third place at nine under.
Overnight leader Kim Chang-yoon, who broke the course record with a 62 on Friday, slipped to minus seven after shooting a 79.
Griffin got to grips with his round at the par-five ninth when he chipped in for eagle from around 40 yards to cancel out a bogey-bogey start.
From then he was a picture of concentration for nine pars in-a-row, and he credited his win last year with giving him the mental fortitude to maintain focus in the worsening conditions.
"Definitely I feel like a different player now," he said. "It helps that you know you can do it, you know you can win."He drew on that experience on the par-four 18th -- which played like a par five for most of the day -- when he put his third shot through the back of the green and then drained the remaining 40-footer to guarantee him the overnight lead.
"That was huge … that could be the difference at the end of the tournament," he said.
