PHIL MICKLESON LEADS BY FOUR IN PHOENIX OPEN

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
By Wire reports, PGATOUR.COM

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- Phil Mickelson took a double bogey on his final hole in the second round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, costing him another shot at history.

A day after his putt for a 59 curled 180 degrees and stay out, Lefty missed a chance to break the US PGA Tour's 36-hole scoring record Friday when he finished with 6 on the par-4 closing hole at TPC Scottsdale.

"You always remember kind of the last hole, the last putt," Mickelson said. "But I think it's very possible that's going to help me because it's got me refocused, that I cannot ease up on a single shot. I've got to be really focused. These guys are going to make a lot of birdies and I've got to get after it and cannot make those kinds of mistakes."
Mickelson followed his opening 60 with a 65 to reach 17-under 125, a stroke off the TOUR record for the first two rounds of a tournament set by Pat Perez in the 2009 Bob Hope Classic and matched by David Toms at Colonial in 2011.
"Unfortunately, I made a double on the last hole and didn't finish the way I wanted to," Mickelson said. "But I think it's a good example of what can happen on this course. You can make a lot of birdies and eagles, make up a lot of ground, but there's a lot of water and trouble there that if you misstep you can easily make bogeys and double."
His drive on No. 18 bounced into the left-side water hazard and, after a penalty drop, he still had a chance to get up down for par and the record.
But he didn't get enough on his approach shot, with the ball landing on the green and rolling off the front edge. His chip got away from him a bit, running 7 feet past, and his bogey putt slid by to the left, leaving him with a share of the Phoenix Open 36-hole record set by Mark Calcavecchia in 2001.
"I hit a good shot, I thought," Mickelson said. "I tried to start it right down the middle and hold it into the wind. It just leaked a little bit left. I still thought it was up. ... Then I hit a poor wedge from there. But the tee shot I didn't think was going to be in the water at any point."
The double bogey left him four strokes ahead of Bill Haas and five in front of Keegan Bradley and Brandt Snedeker. Haas shot a 64, Bradley 63, and Snedeker 66.
Mickelson will play alongside Haas and Bradley in the third round.
"Bill and I have played on a Presidents Cup team, and Keegan and I have been partners in the Ryder Cup and had an incredibly emotional and fun experience together as partners," Mickelson said. "We're going to have a fun day tomorrow."
Mickelson, the winner at TPC Scottsdale in 1996 and 2005, parred the first six holes and played the next 11 in 8 under before the lapse on 18.The 42-year-old former Arizona State star made a 4-foot birdie putton the par-4 ninth -- the hole where he missed the putt for a 59 on Thursday -- and overpowered the par-5 15th for an eagle, hitting to 4 feet after a 358-yard drive.
"I felt really comfortable on the tee box, so I kind of let one go and caught a hold of it and ended up having 191 to the pin," Mickelson said. "It was only 186 to the front, and I hit a hard 8-iron. There was a little bit of helping wind."
After a par on the par-3 16th that drew boos from the rowdy fans on the stadium hole when his tee shot trickled onto the fringe, he drove the green on the 344-yard 17th and two-putted from 70 feet -- leaving his eagle try a foot short -- for birdie.
Bradley also eagled the 15th, hitting a 350-yard drive and a 7-iron approach to 8 feet.
"I just smashed a driver down there," Bradley said. "I had been hitting 3-wood and I'm driving the ball so well that I just decided to rip driver down there."
He birdied the 16th, hitting to 5 feet.
"It reminds me of when I go to Fenway Park," Bradley said. "There's always like a murmur. ... It's really cool. I dig it. I wish there was more holes like that out here."
He birdied Nos. 5-8 on his back nine, holing putts of 10 15, 20 and 8 feet.
"It was such a relief to shoot a good number," Bradley said. "I've been playing so well this whole year and haven't made many putts. Today, the putts started to go in."
Haas began play on No. 10 and made the turn at 6-under 30.
"We all know the way the course is playing, if there's no wind on the weekend, you've just got to keep making birdies," Haas said.
Last year in the Northern Trust Open at Riviera, Haas beat Mickelson and Bradley with a 45-foot birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff.
"It's just another day. It's moving day," Haas said. "Hopefully, I can move up the leaderboard and he (Mickelson) doesn't go too crazy."
DIVOTS: Jason Dufner, grouped with Mickelson and Rickie Fowler, missed the cut by a stroke to end the TOUR's longest active streak at 22. Dufner shot 68-71, leaving Ian Poulter with the longest current streak at 16. Fowler also shot 68-71 to drop out. ... Mike Weir failed to advance a week after ending a streak of 17 missed cuts that dated to July 2001. He shot 69-73.
Masters champion Bubba Watson was 8 under after his second straight 67. He played through strep throat to tie for fourth in the season-opening Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, and withdrew last week in San Diego because of the flu.

SOUTH AFRICAN TOURNAMENT OF HOPE PUT ON BACKBURNER

A new tournament in South Africa, which would have claimed to have the biggest - or one of the biggest - prizefunds outside the United States has been put on the backburner.
The "Tournament of Hope," which was to have prize money of $8.5 million, won't take place in November as planned and has been "put on hold for the foreseeable future" after failing to secure sponsorship.
South Africa's Sunshine Tour says that it has been "unable to fulfill the expectations of potential sponsors for various reasons beyond its control" and the weakening of the South African currency "added more pressure to the budget."
Sunshine Tour executive director Selwyn Nathan said:  "It is deeply regrettable that we have had to take this decision."
The "Tournament of Hope" was sanctioned by the International Federation of PGA Tours, though it did not receive World Golf Championships status. It was to be the centrepiece of a proposed worldwide AIDS awareness effort.

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
 By NEIL AHERN
nahern@europeantour.com
cid:image004.jpg@01CDFEF0.34AA8910Andrew McArthur was in pole position for a first European Challenge Tour title in five years as the Scotsman moved two shots clear at the Gujarat Kensville Challenge thanks to a three under par second round of 69.
Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: cid:image001.jpg@01CD6A7C.DD7C1D00On a day when Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar visited the prestigious Kensville Golf and Country Club, one home favourite drew inspiration from the presence of his sporting idol as Shiv Kapur carded a one under par 71 to enter the weekend in second place on six under.
While the “Little Master” Tendulkar was causing a stir off the course, however, McArthur stole the show on the fairways and he got off to the perfect start as he hit his approach to three feet at the first and knocked in for a birdie. Five consecutive pars were then followed by a birdie at the seventh, which came courtesy of a superb 20-foot putt.
Once again, the Glasgow man stayed steady with nine pars on the trot and a converted 15-foot birdie putt at the 17th helped him to a bogey-free round which elevated him to eight under par for the tournament after opening with a 67.
“I actually hit it better today than the first day,” said the 33 year old former Scottish amateur champion. “I hit it closer and more often and just didn’t hole as many putts but I still holed a couple of nice ones.
“It was really solid. I hit two bad shots all day at the 14th and 15th tees and managed to get away with pars. I had tonnes of chances but you can’t expect to hole them all. Honestly, I must have had seven or eight other chances from eight to 15 feet so it was really good.”
McArthur is now looking forward to the weekend but knows the difficult lay-out at Kensville Golf and Country Club is no place to relax.
“There’s still a long way to go on a course like this but I don’t think there is any advantage in holding back,” he said. “If you shoot level par here at the weekend you’ll be nowhere so you have to press on and see what happens.“
Kapur, meanwhile, started strongly having teed off at the 10th hole, with birdies at the 12th and 14th holes, but he came unstuck with a bogey at the par five 17th to reach the turn in one under.
The New Delhi native picked up a shot at the third hole before missing the green on the par three eighth hole and failing to get up and down for par to finish the day in outright second place.
“I did not really have my A game today,” said the 30 year old. “I didn’t play as well as I did on the first day. It was a bit scrappy and didn’t hit it as close and made some soft bogeys.
“It was blemish free until the 17th and I was playing steady but nothing flashy. It was one of those days where I had to make the best of what I had.
“I'm still in the mix though and that is what’s important, it’s about getting off to a good start and I'm pretty happy with the position I'm in.”
First round leader Agustin Domingo of Spain signed for a one over 73 to finish the day in third place on five under par alongside Tim Sluiter of The Netherlands, who carded a three under par 69.

GALLAGHER JOINT SECOND, ONE BEHND LEADER STERNE

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE

Richard Sterne birdied the final hole at Emirates Golf Club to secure a one shot halfway lead in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
The South African followed his scintillating opening 62 with two under par 70 to lie 12 under overall, one ahead of Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher and two of The European Tour’s rising stars – Dane Thorbjørn Olesen and England’s Tommy Fleetwood.

The 31 year old Sterne was unable to match his spectacular opening effort, but stayed on track for a sixth European Tour victory and first since a serious back injury restricted him to just ten appearances in two years.

World No. 8 Lee Westwood has six shots to make up - and more than 25 players to get past - after a bitterly disappointing finish.

The Englishman drove wildly into the sandy waste on the 359yd 17th and double-bogeyed one of the easiest holes on the course where he has three times been a runner-up, then failed to get up and down from just over the last green and had to settle for a 71.

Sergio Garcia is only three behind despite a shoulder problem he thought might lead to his withdrawal, while former Ryder Cup captain José María Olazábal shot a 67 to be tied 20th.

Sterne was in the Official World Golf Ranking's top 30 before his long battle with a back injury and currently ranks 165th.

He resumed with a birdie, but bogeyed the fourth and 14th and needed more birdies at the three par fives on the back nine to grab top spot back on 12 under par.

Sterne said: "The course was a lot tougher with the wind and the greens definitely firmed out a bit.

"I think it's going to be quite tricky coming to the weekend. There's a lot of guys bunched up and you're going to have to play pretty well to be there on Sunday.

"I had a long time sitting at home watching all the guys and especially the South Africans winning, so it's nice to be back in the action and to have a chance."

Former Challenge Tour winner Fleetwood, 22, has yet to drop a stroke and after a 68 said: "It's just nice to be up there with all these great names."

He was joint leader until Sterne's late strike and added: "I felt fine - I'd rather be there than anywhere else."

Gallacher, 38 year old nephew of ex-Ryder Cup Captain Bernard, has lifted only one European Tour title in more than 400 starts going back 20 years.

But he was joint second with Westwood a year ago and kept alive his hopes of going one better by matching Sterne's round.

Gallacher, pictured right, said: "It was a lot trickier with the wind switching all over the shop and I'm delighted to be still in the hunt."
Olesen is seen as one of Europe's brightest prospects. He has already secured a debut at the US Masters in April - by 0.01 OWGR points - and a fortnight ago shared the runner-up spot with Justin Rose at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
"I believe in myself and want to achieve my own goals - that's the biggest pressure," the 23 year old said after a 66 that began with four successive birdies and again did not contain a single bogey.
His first Tour success came in Sicily last April and he added: "I'm hungry for more wins. I want to win twice this season. That's my main goal, so the quicker I can get the first one the better."

DAVID LAW HAS A 76 AND IS NINE SHOTS BEHIND TURKEY LEADER

David Law's rich seam of form - which saw him win last week on the German PGA's Pro Golf Tour in Turkey and shoot a 68 in the first round of this week's Sueno Pines Classic at Belek - came to an end iin Round 2.
The 21-year-old Aberdonian shot a four-over-par 76 for a level par total of 144 and is in joint 18th position.
Twice Scottish amateur champion, Law  made the cut to play the last round by three shots but he is nine behind leader Ken Benz (Switzerland) who added a 71 to his opening 64 for a nine-under 135 tally.
Law was six over par after only seven holes, thanks to double bogey 6s at the fourth and sixth and single shots dropped at the third and seventh.
An eagle 3 at the long eighth repaired some of the damage as he turned in 40.
But a bogey at the 11th and a birdie at the 14th saw him come home in level par 36.
Paul Lawrie Golf Centre team-mate Jordan Findlay from Fraserburgh missed the cut by 11 shots with a total of 158, made up of a 76 and an 82 which included two double bogeys in an inward 42.
The third PLGC player in the field, Peterhead's Philip McLean did not play in the second round. He notified the organisers he was retiring after an opening 76.

Paul Lawrie Ladies' Tour inaugural schedule is fast taking shpe

PERTHSHIRE DOUBLE HEADER FOR PLGC SLOT AT BLAIRGOWRIE, ALYTH

The Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Scottish Ladies Open Tour organisers have fixed up Blairgowrie and Alyth as a Perthshire double-header for 18-hole competitions on consecutive days this summer.

"Blairgowrie Rosemount (clubhouse pictured above) will play hosts to a field of 30 female professionals and amateurs with single-figure handicaps on July 11.

Near neighbours Alyth Golf Club will stage another stand-alone event on July 12," said co-organiser Nicola Melville, a PGA teaching professional at St Andrews.

Both Blairgowrie and Alyth are north of Perth and competitors should be able to find accommodation that will enable them to visit both courses from the same base.

Alyth is regarded as one of the hidden gems among Scotland's inland golf courses, set in heathland with fairways lined with heather, pines and silver birch.

The original nine holes were designed by Old Tom Morris for an 1894 opening and James Braid completed the extention to 18 holes in 1934.

The new non-profit tour, which is supported by the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre and by the R&A, is designed to raise the games of female professionals to a standard required to get them through the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School.

It should also give low-handicap girl amateurs the opportunity to measure themselves against the tour professionals and help them decide if and when they themselves are ready to turn pro.

The prize fund at each event is expected to be £2,500.

The PLGC SLOT schedule so far is:

April 18 Marriott Dalmahoy. 19 Ratho Park.

May 6 North-east venue (tbc). 7 Deeside.

July 2 Downfield. 3 Carnoustie. 11 Blairgowrie. 12 Alyth.

August  - The Duke's (tba), Ladybank (tbc).

September 23 Haggs Castle. 24 Drumpellier.

October - Fairmont St Andrews (tba), Marriott Dalmahoy Tour Championship over 36 holes (tba).

(tbc) = venue to be confirmed.
(tba) = venue confirmed, dates to be arranged.

NOTE TO POTENTIAL COMPETITORS:
Places are limited in most events because we have been
given only tee times for 30 players.
Entries are being accepted NOW for all 14 tournaments
on the PLOT SLOT 2013 schedule on a first-come-first-served
basis.
The first 20 professional entrants for any competition will be
guaranteed a start. A reserve list will be opened after that so
that if spaces do become available for one reason or another
players will come off the reserve list in their order of entry.
The 10 amateurs with the lowest handicaps will have their
entries accepted after the amateur entry list closes a week
before a tournament date. Date of entry will be the tie-breaker
if necessary.
If the number of amateurs' places is not taken up, then these
will go to the professionals.

MINA GOES FOUR CLEAR AT ONEASIA Q SCHOOL

LOS ANGELES, California - Rookie American professional Eric Mina fired a brilliant third-round six-under 66 on Thursday to take command of OneAsia's Q-School at Industry Hills Golf Club in Los Angeles
Leading the field by two overnight, Mina (right) eased to 15 under for the tournament, four shots ahead of South Korean Lim Hyun-seok (66), with Canadian Ryan Yip (69) and American John Young Kim (70) two strokes further adrift.
Nearly 200 players signed up for the final stages of 2013 Q-School, with 10 spots up for grabs in California and 14 at Sutera Harbour Golf Club in Kota Kinabalu from February 5 - 8.
The aim for the California leg was to attract the Asia-Pacific players who base themselves on the U.S. west coast for college or training during winter, and also young professionals from north America with roots across the Pacific.
Mina, 25, who hails from California but has family in the Philippines, turned professional only last year after finishing studies at Berkeley. Compact and measured, he has a clear path mapped out for his future and refuses to be distracted along the way.
"I'm really pleased with the way I played today, but it is a four-day tournament and there is a lot to play for," he said.
A win in Los Angeles or Malaysia next week is rewarded by a start in all OneAsia's world-ranked million-dollar tournaments -- including the national Open championships of Australia, China, Korea and Thailand -- but Mina wouldn't mind having to rethink his plan
"It would be a great accomplishment," he said.
"When a tournament is said and done, and you've done well, you've got to congratulate yourself."
Second placed Lim, born in Korea but brought up in southern California, said he probably wouldn't have entered Q-School had a leg not also been held in Los Angeles as he couldn't justify the travel.
"Having the tournament here was a big advantage for me as I'm not sure I could have gone to Malaysia. However, now I really want to do well tomorrow. This is a big opportunity for me," he said.
"It would be a really big thing if I could get to play on OneAsia."
Masamichi Ito, at 17 the youngest player in the field, was delighted to be in seventh place after learning about qualifying on the Japan Golf Tour Organisation's (JGTO) Challenge Tour.
"I heard about OneAsia in Japan and thought it was better to come here for me," said Ito.
The JGTO and OneAsia have forged a growing relationship that includes two tournaments being co-sanctioned by both bodies this year-- including the season-opening U.S.$ 1 million Thailand Open from March 14-17, when earnings counting for both money lists.

JAMES BYRNE MOVES UP WITH A THIRD-ROUND 68 ON ADT

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE ADIAN TOUR
Sungai Buloh, Selangor, Malaysia: Malcolm Kokocinski of Sweden signalled his arrival to Asia by shooting a three-under-par 69 to share the third round lead with Zaw Moe of Myanmar and Japanese Mitsuhiko Hashizume at the PGM CCM Rahman Putra Masters today.
The Swedish newcomer produced a flawless round to tie with veteran Moe and co-overnight leader Hashizume, who both shot a 67 and 72 respectively in the RM200,000 (approximately US$65,000) Asian Development Tour event.
The trio, leading on eight-under-par 208, were a shot ahead of Singapore’s highly rated Quincy Quek (70) and local hope R. Nachimuthu (72), the 2011 PGM Tour number one, in the first ADT event to be afforded with Official World Golf Ranking points this season.
Banchory's James Byrne moved up to joint sixth place with a four-under-par 68 for 210.
After missing the grade at the Asian Tour Qualifying School last week, Kokocinski is determined to make amends as he aims for his first professional win after joining the play-for-pay ranks four months ago.
“This is my first time playing in Asia and I’m really enjoying it. I’ve been putting pretty good and that was my main focus. I kept calm and didn’t make any bogeys. It was a good round,” said the Swede.
The 21-year-old might be a newcomer in Asia but he swiftly acclimatized with the humidity and was rewarded with three birdies on holes five, 10 and 11 at the Rahman Putra Golf Club.
“I think Asia is a nice place to play in. The people are nice the weather is really good because it is freezing back home now! The ADT has world ranking points and that’s an extra benefit for players who do well,” said Kokocinski.
Myanmar’s Moe got off to a flying start, shooting four-under at the turn and added two more birdies against one bogey in his homeward nine to charge up the leaderboard.
The 45-year-old, who is playing on a sponsor’s invitation, made a slight change in his swing during the Asian Tour’s off season and the tinkering paid dividends.
“I hit it quite close and made some putts.  I made some changes to my swing with my coach and it looks good on videos but I’m not that comfortable on the course yet. Hopefully I can keep the momentum going and stay at the top,” said Moe.
Joint overnight leader Iain Steel of Malaysia slipped back to tied sixth place after posting a 74.
