STEPHEN GRAY WINS FROM FAST-FINISHING GREG MCBAIN
Stephen Gray made sure there was no slip twixt cup and lip in retaining the overnight lead to win the top prize of £6,500 in the Tartan Tour's Tomatin Single Malt 54-hole pro-am over three of the best links in the country - Royal Dornoch, Nairn and Castle Stuart.
Gray's 67 at Dornoch and 68 at Castle Stuart had seen him slip clear of the field with one round to go, in his case, at the Walker Cup venue of Nairn.
The Hayston pro turned in a flawless performance under the pressure of being in the pole position. He scored a bogey-free 68 with birdies at the seventh, eighth, 10th and 18th to finish on 11-under-par 203.
Second place went to young Aberdonian Greg McBain (Gamola Golf) who played the best golf by anyone in the field over the last two rounds. He saddled himself with a six-over 76 at Royal Dornoch in his first round but then shot a 65 at Castle Stuart followed by a brilliant eight-under 64 at Nairn in his final round.
He finished on 205. two behind the winner, and collected a £5,000 cheque.
Former PGA champion Andrew Oldcorn (Kings Acre) and Simon Lilly (Wellingborough) tied for third place on 207 and earned £3,700 apiece.
