SGU BOYS CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS EVENT WASHED OUT - RESCHEDULED FOR NEXT SPRING

The weather has hit the final event of the Scottish amateur domestic season in St Andrews today, with the Scottish Junior Champion of Champions called off due to heavy rain.

Play was abandoned at approximately 1.30pm due to flooded green on The Duke’s Course. Only a handful of players had completed their rounds.
With the forecast for the rest of the day to remain wet, play for the day was suspended.

The event is now to be rescheduled for the spring of 2014, depending on availability at The Duke’s. The selection criteria for the event will remain the same as that for the 2013 staging.

In light of today’s events, the SGU apologies for any inconvenience caused.

A star-studded field of 46 male junior winners had gathered for an end-of-year 18-hole stroke play contest to determine who would be crowned ‘Champion of Champions’.

National winners, Area champions and internationalists from across Scotland assembled at the world-renowned Fife venue in pursuit of the prestigious crown, being contested for a seventh time.

Last year, Greg Telfer (Prestwick St Cuthbert) took the title, 12 months after Blairgowrie’s Bradley Neil, the current Scottish Boys champion, was the victor.

The girls’ Junior Champion of Champion was staged at the Duke’s last weekend, with Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) ending her year on a high by claiming the title.

In tough conditions, Whyte edged out international team-mate Nicola Robertson (Dunblane New) by a shot to win the title with an impressive 73 – following in the spike marks of a notable past winner, Ladies European Tour star Carly Booth.
