MARK WIEBE BEATS COREY PAVIN IN CHAMPIONS TOUR PLAY-OFF
MARK WIEBE, ANOTHER BIG WIN FOR THE BRITISH SENIOR OPEN CHAMPION

Mark Wiebe holed an eight-foot birdie putt on the 18th
hole in regulation to get into a playoff with Corey Pavin and then
eventually defeated him with a 20-foot par-saving putt on the second
extra hole. On the second playoff hole, it appeared as if Pavin was in
better position to win after chipping his third shot to within 10 feet

Prior to that, Wiebe putted from the fringe for his third shot but when he failed to get his ball over the ridge in the sloping 18th green, it eventually rolled back to 20 feet. However, Wiebe holed his putt and then watched Pavin come up short on his bid to send the playoff to a third extra hole.

-- Today’s playoff was the fifth of the year and the second in the last three tournaments on the Champions Tour. It was Wiebe’s second playoff of the 2013 season. He won the Senior British Open at Royal Birkdale, defeating Bernhard Langer with a par-4 on the fifth extra hole. The 2013 season started in Hawaii with a playoff at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. On the Big Island in January, John Cook defeated David Frost with a birdie two on the second extra hole.
-- World Golf Hall of Fame member and 34-time PGA TOUR winner Vijay Singh was tied for the lead after 11 holes on Sunday, but he played his final seven holes in 2-over par to drop down into a T6 in his debut on the Champions Tour. After making just one bogey in his first 48 holes, Singh made two bogeys and a double-bogey over his last six holes at Kapolei Golf Club.
-- Pavin’s 69 today was his 11th straight round in the 60s on the 2013 Champions Tour, a streak that started with a 69 on Saturday of the Senior British Open at Royal Birkdale. His playoff loss today was his third consecutive runner-up effort and fifth straight tournament where he’s finished either second or third. Earlier this year, Fred Couples had three straight runner-up finishes.
Today’s playoff loss was also Pavin’s sixth straight top-10 performance. The all-time Champions Tour record for most consecutive sub-70 scores is 13 by Hale Irwin in 1999.
-- Bernhard Langer’s final-round 68 moved him up into solo third place in the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship. It was his fifth straight top-10 and eighth top-10 performance in his last nine tournaments dating back to a T10 in early June at the Regions Tradition. Overall, Langer now has 13 top-10 finishes this year in his 19 appearances on the Champions Tour which leads the circuit.
-- Bernhard Langer earned 130 Charles Schwab Cup points this week and increased his yearly Schwab Cup total to 2,033. He now trails Kenny Perry by 727 points in the season-long race with five events remaining. David Frost also earned 56 Schwab Cup points this week and remains in third place with 1,786 total points. At the end of the season, the player earning the most Schwab Cup points will earn a $1 million payout.
-- Champions Tour rookie Brian Henninger recorded his first top-10 finish on the Champions Tour, a T6 this week at Kapolei Golf Club. Prior to this week, Henninger’s best effort in 11 previous appearances was 14th at the Boeing Classic.
-- The par-72 Kapolei Golf Club played to a stroke average of 72.149 this week compared to 71.516 last year. There were only 14 rounds in the 60s today and Fred Couples had the low round of the day with 66 that included eight birdies. There were 19 scores in the 60s on Saturday compared to 18 sub-70 rounds on Friday. For the second straight year, the the par-4 13th hole played as the most difficult (4.266). The par-5 14th hole played as the easiest (4.548), giving up four eagles and 122 birdies.
-- Bruce Summerhays, a three-time winner on the Champions Tour, finished 80th in his first appearance on the circuit since he last played at the 2010 Principal Charity Classic. The 69-year-old Summerhays has been serving as an LDS mission president in Tampa, Fla. the last three years.
-- World Golf Hall of Fame member Isao Aoki made his first appearance on the Champions Tour since playing in last year’s Pacific Links Hawaii Championship and was 79th. Aoki was forced to withdraw last year prior to the final round with a hip injury.
