Foos claimed a place in the third round of the Boys Amateur
Championship at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) but the 16-year-old German
needed to battle all the way before he ended the challenge of brave
Frenchman Edgar Catherine on the 19th hole.
The German No. 1 will now play 2012 English Amateur Champion, Harry
Ellis, from Marriott Meon Valley, in the third round after the Hampshire
player beat Jamie Dick from Forest Hills by 2 and 1
That is just one of several attractive matches in tomorrow’s draw with French international Paul Elissalde playing against leading qualifier Jack Hermeston from the City of Newcastle and the hugely talented Italian, Renato Paratore, taking on Alister Balcombe, from Clevedon.
There is also a junior version of the finale in the Home Internationals at Ganton with English international Jack Singh Brar, from Brokenhurst Manor, taking on his Scottish counterpart Ewen Ferguson from Bearsden
The plus-6 handicap Foos started this year’s Championship as one of the favourites and he quickly lived up to that billing when he played the first 13 holes of his second round match against Catherine in three-under-par.
Foos had barely put a foot wrong at that stage but he drove into a bunker to lose the 460-yard par-4 15th, lost the long 16th to a birdie four and then also dropped a shot at the 18th before squeezing into the third round when Catherine three-putted from 40-feet on the 19th hole.
It was a tough match,” said the relieved reigning German Junior champion from St Leon-Rot. “Edgar played some great golf over the closing few holes but I wasn’t worried because I knew I’d get another chance.
“It was all a bit close but I got through in the end.”
Foos will now play Ellis in tomorrow’s third round in a repeat of this year’s final at the French International Boys Championship at St Cloud where the German emerged as the 4 & 2 victor.
Ellis lost the first two holes of his second round match against Dick but got back to level with a birdie on the 378-yard par-4 four 6th before playing the next nine holes in three-under-par.
The 17-year-old Englishman lost the 16th after driving into trouble and then hitting his approach into a greenside bunker but he went on to recover from another errant tee shot to close out the match with a par on the 17th hole.
“I hit my opening tee shot out-of-bounds and then lost the second as well but after that I played some very good golf,” said the 2012 English champion. “It’s great to get through and even better to be playing Dominic. I’m looking forward to our re-match.”
The biggest victory of the day came from Italy’s Renato Paratore, who won last year’s European Young Masters in Hungary and, in June, battled his way through to the quarter finals of The Amateur Championship at Royal Cinque Ports before losing by two holes to former American Junior champion, Jim Liu.
Paratore is renowned as one of the fastest players on the amateur circuit and he certainly made quick work of his second round opponent Alan De Bondt from Belgium by beating him 7 and 6.
De Bondt won the long third with a birdie but from then on the 16-year-old from Rome took complete control. He birdied the 7th, 8th and 11th and with De Bondt dropping shots on the 4th, 5th, 9th and 10th the end came when Paratore secured a regulation par-4 on the 450-yrd 12th.
Late in the day Irish Boys’ champion Robin Dawson, from Faithlegg, birdied the last three holes to tie his match against compatriot, Gareth Lappin, from Belvoir Park, and then won the match on the 19th hole when his unfortunate opponent hit his second shot out-of-bounds. It was the first time Dawson had been ahead in the whole match. He will now play Scotland’s Adam Fisher for a place in the last-16.
The shot of the day came from Germany’s Michael Hirmer who had a hole-in-one on the 161-yard par-3 13th hole on his way to beating Drayton Park’s Cameron Long by two holes. Hirmer’s ace came after the German had taken control of the match with three consecutive birdies from the 8th but he went on to lose the 12th, 13th and 15th before sealing victory with a birdie three down the last. His next opponent is Hampus Nilsson from Sweden.
Players from a total of eight different countries have battled their way through to the last 32 of this year’s Boys Amateur Championship. England top the list with 15 contenders followed by Spain, Scotland and Germany with three, two from France and Ireland and one apiece from Belgium, Sweden and Italy.
