MILLPORT OPEN WIN: LES PIRIE FOLLOWS IN SON'S FOOTSTEPS

At the ripe old age of 55, Les Pirie (Millport) yesterday won the play-off for Millport's annual 36 hole open.
The event staged last Saturday in 30 mph winds resulted in a tie between Pirie and former winner George Reynolds (Rothesay) on 142.
In blistering sunshine the play-off was won by Pirie with a 72 to Reynolds' 77. Pirie took a stranglehold on the match after Reynolds hit three balls out of bounds on the short fourth hole, resulting in a catastrophic 9.
Pirie struggled with some erratic putting but solid iron play saw him hit 15 of the 18 greens in regulation.
Pirie was presented with the Cumbrae Cup by Millport vice-captain Netty Farquharson and he mentioned that having been runner-up in the event on four previous occasions he was obviously delighted to win the trophy which he had first competed for in 1973 and that his son Craig's victory in 2012 was obviously the kick up the backside he required to win this year.
