ENGLAND 1-2 AT TOP OF ST ANDREWS TROPHY LEADERBOARD

Coming up to the end of play after a long opening day in the St Andrews Links Trophy 72-hole tournament, Ryan Evans (Wellingborough) was setting the pace over the Jubilee Course with a six-under-par 66.
If Evans is looking for an omen - Northamptonshire clubmate Meghan MacLaren, daughter of European Tour director David MacLaren, won the Irish women's open amateur stroke-play title a couple of weeks ago.
Compatriot Nathan Kimsey (Woodhall Spa) came next with a 68.
Scots Daniel Hendry from the Middle East and home-grown Graeme Robertson had been sharing the lead with  Belgium's Thomas Detry on the 69 mark.
Garrick Porteous from the North-east of England's Bamburgh Castle club was well down the list with a 76.
