GLASGOW WIN SCOTTISH BOYS AREA TEAM TITLE AT PRESTWICK
Glasgow sizzled in the summer sun to
end the dominance of the Lothians in the Dunfermline Building Society
Scottish Boys Area Team Championship today (9 June 2013).
At
Prestwick St Cuthbert, conditions were simply superb for the annual
battle between the 16 Area Associations of the Scottish Golf Union.
The
Lothians claimed a historic hat-trick of titles 12 months ago, but it
was their west rivals who took the spoils in Ayrshire to secure their
first victory in the event since 1981, indeed only their second-ever
championship success.
After Glasgow were
runners-up last year, there was joy at going one better for their
four-man team of George Burns (Williamwood), Fraser Davren
(Williamwood), Alan Waugh (Cowglen) and Calum Fyfe (Cawder). Burns and
Waugh are both members of the SGU National Boys’ Performance Squad.
Glasgow
posted a 353 total (two foursomes in the morning and the best three
scores out of four in the afternoon singles) to win by seven strokes
over the sun-kissed par-71 layout.
It was
a solid overall team performance from Glasgow, helped by a four-under
67 from Burns in the singles, a 68 from Davren and Waugh’s 71.
The
North East, with Paul Lawrie’s son Craig among their number, claimed
runner-up spot, edging out Angus into third spot. With both sides tied
on 360, it went to the 4th better score in the singles to secure the
North East second place.
In the end, the defending champion Lothians had to settle for a share of fifth place.
Burns
almost achieved a notable double triumph for Glasgow, only for Connor
Cook from Angus to win the individual prize, the Niagara Cup, after his
sparkling five-under 66. Alexander Wilson of the Lothians joined Burns
in firing 67.HOW THEY FINISHED
