EUROPE RYDER CUP SKIPPER FOR GLENEAGLES TO BE NAMED QUICKLY ON TUESDAY.

José María Olazábal’s successor as Europe Ryder Cup captain will be announced immediately after a vote is taken next week in order to avoid the betting controversy which blighted the appointment of Colin Montgomerie.

Montgomerie's appointment as Ryder Cup captain in 2009 emerged after a flurry of wagers on him

“If we come to a decision in Abu Dhabi we will have to announce it that night,” said Thomas Bjorn, the chairman of the 15-man Tournament Players Committee which will meet in the United Arab Emirates capital on Tuesday evening.

The Tour is desperate not to have a repeat scenario of the farce in 2009 when Montgomerie’s appointment came out thanks to a series of bets forcing his price to tumble in the hours after the meeting.
“It was a bit daft, if not unseemly,” Montgomerie told Telegraph Sport. “We were told to keep it hush but then from being a rank outsider I was suddenly huge odds-on. We could do without a recurrence.”
Bookmakers last night welcomed the move. “It’s definitely wise,” said a Ladbrokes spokesman. “We took the market down a while ago as we didn’t want to leave ourselves exposed.”
Bjorn will have the casting vote if there is a deadlock. The race for Gleneagles 2014 seems to be between Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley, with Montgomerie also mentioned after United States reinstated a former winning captain in Tom Watson.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy has set up a foundation to help children’s charities around the world. For each of his first six events in 2013, his bag will carry the name and logo of a children’s charity and will be auctioned.
