GRAEME BROWN FAVOURITE FOR YOUNG PROS' CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE PGA IN SCOTLAND
The Scottish Young Professionals Championship – open to all PGA Trainees and Qualified Professionals under the age of 25 – will be staged at The West Lothian Golf Club this coming week.
It is the third consecutive year that West Lothian has hosted the Championship, and a there will be a new name inscribed upon the trophy on Thursday night, with none of the field having lifted the trophy before.
Three time winner David Patrick is not eligible to defend his title this time around, having completed his PGA degree last year, and there will be no shortage of competitors anxious to fill the void.
In the absence of Dunbar’s Neil Fenwick, who has opted to pursue his European Tour ambitions at the first stage of the Qualifying School, Graeme Brown (Montrose Links) will start as favourite, with Ross Dixon (Renaissance), Keir McNicoll (Gullane)  Daniel Wood (Hirsel) and Ballumbie Castle’s Patrick Walker others who are likely to present a challenge.
Martin Lawrence (Newmachar) and Andrew Rollo (Moray) have both won at this level in the past and cannot be discounted.
Gullane’s Emma Fairnie is the only Lady Professional in the field of 80.
Play gets underway at 8am on Tuesday and Wednesday morning for the first two rounds, after which there will be a cut to the leading 34 players, with those surviving the cut playing 36 holes on Thursday.
Spectators are welcome, and entry is free.

PETER HANSON WINS KLM OPEN FROM LARRAZABAL, RAMSAY

AND THE WINNER IS .... PETER HANSON

REPORT BY EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Peter Hanson ended a difficult personal week on a dramatic high note after holing a 30ft eagle putt on the last hole to win the KLM Open in his last tournament before The Ryder Cup.
The Swede came close to withdrawing from the event at Hilversumsche GC after his one year old son Tim was hospitalised with a respiratory virus on Friday.
But with his son’s condition improving, his decision to continue paid off as he secured a fifth European Tour title with a stunning climax, closing with a 67 to finish on 14 under par,  two shots clear of long-time leader Pablo Larrazábal and last week’s Omega European Masters champion Richie Ramsay.
“It’s always a nice feeling to win, but especially this week with how things have been with my son being  ill,” said Hanson.
“But he is getting better and it’s great that I’m sitting here with this fantastic trophy.
“When he was put into hospital on Friday, I was panicking. He was not good for 12 to 14 hours there and as a parent that makes you feel very vulnerable.
“I just wanted to go back home and look after the family, but my wife convinced me to stay. They were in good hands; there was nothing I could do and she was telling me that, but when your kids get sick you don’t think straight.”
Quizzed on how he was able to maintain his concentration in trying circumstances, Hanson replied: “When we get a chance to lift these trophies, something just clicks in your head. I was just trying to stay focussed.
“This was needed. It’s been a bit of a slow summer for me, so this came at a perfect time to get confidence back and feel ready for The Ryder Cup.”
Larrazábal looked set to triumph when Hanson, trailing by one, drove into trouble at 16.
However, the Swede rescued a stunning par from the trees and was soon back in a tie for the lead as Larrazábal bogeyed the same hole.
Hanson then knocked in a monster putt for a three on the closing par five and was able to celebrate soon after as his nearest rival finished with a par.
“To see that ball drop was unbelievable,” said Hanson. “I haven’t won in two years but I have had a few chances. It’s always nice when you can finish it off. We are playing quality fields and quality courses so it means a lot, especially going into the Ryder Cup with a lot of confidence.”

REPORT AND SCORES FROM MICHAEL GIBBONS
  EUROPEAN SENIOR TOUR PRESS OFFICER
Terry Price completed the most dominant victory of the 2012 European Senior Tour season with a final round of five under par 67 to record a stunning six-shot win over Marc Farry and Barry Lane at Winston Golf.
The Australian was simply unstoppable during the final round over the Winston Open course as he secured the first Senior Tour victory of his career and the first place cheque for €60,000.
With some of the Senior Tour’s biggest names – among them Lane and Bernhard Langer – starting their own final rounds with a bang, Price could have been forgiven for taking it easy and feeling his way into the final round, which he had begun with a three-stroke cushion.
But the 51 year old went on the attack from the word go, birdieing two of his first three holes to keep plenty of daylight between himself and the chasing pack.
He then decided to blow the rest of the field out of the water with a breath-taking run of four consecutive birdies between the ninth and 12th holes to set up a victory stroll over his closing holes as he finished the week on 16 under par to win by six and smash Tim Thelen’s previous three-stroke winning-margin record of 2012.
“It feels great to win,” said Price, who leaped 42 spots on the Senior Tour Order of Merit to move to 21st position.
“The week couldn’t really have gone any better – it was very smooth. I only made two bogeys all week and it was tough at points out there so it was by no means easy and that makes it all the more satisfying.
“Because I had a good lead overnight, I actually thought that the best way to approach today was to set myself a target. I was trying to get to 17 under for the week and I failed by one but I suppose when you win by six shots you can’t have too many complaints!

“This feels great – my game felt like it had been getting very close in the build-up to this week but to come here and play the way that I did is really, really satisfying.

“It means a lot to win out here in a field with players Like Barry Lane and Bernhard Langer in it. Those two guys are among the best Senior players in the world and there are so many other great players out here that it is a really great achievement to come out on top.

“I know my score was pretty low but it was a pretty tough golf course that we played this week and I have to say that the condoning of the course and the set-up of the tournament was just first class.”

Given the level of dominance displayed by Price throughout the tournament, Farry and Lane were happy to share second place and cheque for €34,000 each.

“I have to say well done to Terry – that is just a fantastic achievement to finish the week around this golf course on 16 under par,” said Farry.

“I am very pleased to finish second because I began the week without a lot of confidence and I feel that is coming back to me now after playing well for the three rounds here. It is such a crazy game and it is all about confidence so I will look forward to the last few events of the season now.”

Lane never seems to lack confidence on the Senior Tour, and another strong finish further cemented his second place on the Order of Merit, behind the Senior Tour’s two-time Major Champion of 2012, Roger Chapman.
“It’s been another good week,” said the Englishman. “We have had a lot of fun this week and it is good to keep playing well and keep getting some good results on the board, but this is definitely Terry’s day and Terry’s week – he has been awesome this week and really deserves to win.”

CHRIS DOAK WARMS UP FOR KAZAKHSTAN MAJOR WITH 4TH IN RUSSIA

REPORT AND SCORES FROM NEIL AHERN
European Challenge Tour Press Officer
Chris Doak battled back after two early bogeys to card a two under par final round of 70 and finish in tied fourth place at the M2M Russian Challenge Cup and the Greenock man said he is confident mood ahead of the European Challenge Tour’s ‘Major’ in Kazakhstan this coming week.
Doak had a poor start to his final round at the stunning Tseleevo Golf and Polo Club, outside Moscow, with bogeys at the second and fifth holes.
But thereafter he flourished as he saved par with a good up and down at the sixth hole before following that up with a birdie at the seventh and an eagle at the par five eighth hole, where he fired his second shot to eight feet with a rescue club.
A birdie at the tenth moved him to five under par for the tournament and that’s where he stayed thanks to seven pars on the way in as he goes to next week’s Kazakhstan Open on the back of a hugely encouraging tournament in Russia.
“With the rain, and I was rushing to the course, I just got off to a rubbish start,” said the 35 year old. “The sixth hole I had a good up and down from the bunker and then had a birdie and a wee bonus eagle on the eighth.
“From there on I played really well and just couldn’t get the ball in the hole. I hit it close a few times and had birdie opportunities all the way in but maybe I got too excited to hole them.
“I would take that score with the week I've had though because I was three over after the first round and I was struggling to get my Visa for Kazakhstan.
“It’s tough with the greens on the fourth day after a rainy week so I'm happy with the way this tournament has gone.
“I've never played the course for Kazakhstan next week so it will be good to go back there and it’s a big week. If you do well you do well and if you don’t you don’t but my game is in good shape. I've been working with Bob (Torrance) whenever I can and my putting is coming along so I'm happy.”
Alexandre Kaleka, meanwhile, claimed his second European Challenge Tour title as his two under par round of 70 was enough to overcome Alessandro Tadini after a thrilling final day battle.
The Frenchman began the day two shots off the lead held by Alessandro Tadini and, on an intriguing day where the lead was exchanged back and forth, he battled his way back from a double bogey at the 15th hole to claim his first title in three years.
The win moved him from 12th in the Challenge Tour Rankings to fifth and means he is now almost certain to earn a card for The European Tour next season.

AUSSIE GRIFFIN SCORES BIGGEST WIN - IN SOUTH KOREA

OHAN, South Korea- Australian Matthew Griffin scored the biggest win of his professional career today with a one-stroke victory at the 2012 Charity High1 Resort Open in South Korea's Gangwon-do province.
The 29-year-old from Melbourne  led by two overnight but held his nerve in a topsy-turvy final round for an even-par 72 that gave him a nine-under total of 279 and the winner's cheque of around U.S. $178,000.
Kang Kyung-nam (68) and Park Sang-Hyun (71), both of Korea, pushed Griffin all the way around the hilly 6,542 metre (7,148 yard) High1 Resort Country Club course, which at 1,137 metres ( 3,730 feet) is the highest golf course in Korea.
Kim Bi-o, winner of two events on the OneAsia circuit already this year, was a shot further back. His hopes of an unprecedented third OneAsia title on home soil came unstuck with two wayward shots on the par-five 13th, although he salvaged bogey with a breathtaking 60-foot putt.
"I am really, really thrilled," Griffin said after his victory. "This is what I have worked for all my life, so it is absolutely amazing to finally get there."
Griffin, once ranked the third-best amateur in the world, was a relative latecomer to the professional ranks and only scored his first four-round  victory at the romantically named South Pacific Open in New Caledonia last year.
The win here propels him up the OneAsia Order of Merit and gives him a two-year exemption, but equally gives him a confidence boost to tackle Q-School on the U.S. PGA Tour at the end of the year.

HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNAN COUNTY NEWS

CHARLETON TEST FOR COUNTY BOYS.

Against strong opposition in the Gary Harvey team event, the county Boys recorded some good performances.  Against the Home Area Fife, the boys went down by 4 matches to 3 with one half.  Best Clackmannan performances came from Internationalist Lawrence Allan (Alva) ---- 3 up at the turn, he forged ahead to an emphatic 5/4 win. Braehead’s Rikky Alexander had a closer match, but against an experienced opponent, he increased his 1 hole lead after 9 to a 4/2 win.  Ryan Blyth had a walkover in his game, and Scott Beattie snatched a half at the last with an approach that finished close to the hole.

GRAHAM’S ALLIANCE TRIUMPH

New Midland Alliance member John Graham (Alloa) took the top handicap prize at Thornton last week.  In windy conditions, John rolled back the years with a 75 less 7 to give a net 68--- a comfortable 3 shot victory, and giving him a qualifying place in the Midland Alliance Championship next April at Crieff..  Tulliallan’s Billy Bell finished 8th equal with a net 76.

AND A TRIUMPH FOR MARGARET AS WELL

In the Dunblane Senior Ladies event, Alloa’s Margaret Frame added another success to her long golfing career by taking the scratch prize with an 81 in difficult conditions.
In fact had she not dropped shots at the last two holes, she would have had the leading handicap score as well.
Rhonda Didcock (Tillicoultry) had a minor success in the same event with a nearest-the –pin at the 11th hole.
