CRAIBSTONE HOST NORTH-EAST ALLIANCE ON WED, FEBRUARY 15

Craibstone golf course, Bucksburn, Aberdeen will be open next Wednesday (February 15) but, due to work being carried out by SSE Power, there will be no electricity in the clubhouse from 9am to 3.30pm.
Despite that the North-east Golfers' Alliance competition, originally scheduled for Stonehaven on February 15, will be switched to Craibstone. Inchmarlo, the other alternative, is not available.
Davie Wilson, the North-east Alliance joint secretary, says that Craibstone General Manager Billy Sim has assured him that they will be able to offer a catering service, thanks to an emergency gas supply.
And the alliance's computer, on which competitors, log in their scores after their rounds will be functioning, with the aid of a power pack.
So, spread the word, next Wednesday's North-east Alliance is ON at CRAIBSTONE.

CRICHTON v SOUTAR FOR TOP SCOT HONOUR IN SOUTH AFRICA

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Scott Crichton from Aberdour and Leven Golfing Society member Brian Soutar will battle it out for the honour of being leading Scot in tomorrow's fourth and final round of the South African amateur stroke-play golf championship at Glendower Golf Club, Gauteng.
Neither has a realistic chance of winning the title for which Italian Andrea Bolognesi is now the favourite, having shot a 68 to take the lead on nine-under-par 207.
South African No 1, 18-year-old Brandon Stone, who had been making all the running and was four or five shots clear of the field, suddenly fell off his pedestal over the third round.
After rounds of 66 and 68, it was a "Stone the crows!" effort of 75 which has dragged him down to a share of third place on 209. Not out of it by any means, but he will to dip into his bag of brilliance for a last-round rally to come to the front again.
With one round to go, Crichton, pictured above, is seven shots off the pace after a one-under-par 71 for two-under 214 which puts him in a share of 13th place.
Soutar is on joint 16th on level par 216 after a 70, the best third-round score by any of the six Scots who survive the cut. Soutar bogeyed only the 17th after birdieing the ninth, 10th and 13th.
Fraser McKenna (Balmore) had a 73 for 222 and a share of 40th place alongwith James White (Lundin) whose par 72 was his best score so far.
Dunbar's Daniel Kay had his worst score, a 76, for 223 and joint 49th place while Conor O'Neil (Pollok), with two double bogeys on his card, had a 79 for 229 and a share of 70th place.

SPAIN'S CABRERA-BELLO LEADS WITH NINE-UNDER 63 IN DUBAI

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Rafael Cabrera-Bello’s nine under par 63 left him two shots clear at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic but World No 2 Rory McIlroy had seven birdies in his last ten holes to finish the opening round only three behind.
It could have been even better for both of them, however.
Cabrera-Bello had the chance to achieve The European Tour's first 59 when he stood on his 12th tee nine under par.
It left him needing four more birdies to achieve the magic figure, but the 27 year old Spaniard parred in for a 63 and a two-stroke lead over German Marcel Siem and Scotland's Scott Jamieson.
US Open Champion McIlroy was deep in the pack at one over after eight, but a birdie on the difficult ninth sparked him into life and by the time he almost holed-in-one on the 15th - Scot Stephen Gallacher did make an ace there - he was up to five under.
Two glorious shots to the 564yd 18th gave him an opportunity to close with an eagle, but the 2009 winner - it was his first professional victory - had to be content with two-putting for another birdie.
Cabrera-Bello said: "Just for a second after the birdie on number two (his 11th hole) I tried to do the maths on what I needed for 59.
"Then I told myself to stop being foolish and don't be too greedy. Nothing wrong happened - there were some tough holes to come and I didn't drop a stroke.
"It's a really, really good score, but in itself it means nothing. If you want to stay grounded you think of how many leaders of the first round win the tournament. Not that many.
"I know I have to play really, really well just to have a chance."
Lee Westwood had a 69, last week's winner Paul Lawrie a 71 after closing with a double bogey on the ninth and Abu Dhabi champion Robert Rock a 73.
Siem had the chance to grab his lowest-ever round on The European Tour when he stood on the fairway at the par five 18th eight under, but his second flew right of target into the lake - he thought there must have been mud under the ball - and he ran up a bogey six.
Highlight of Jamieson's round was an eagle 3 on the 550yd 13th and the 28 year old Scot backed it up with five birdies, three of them on the par-3s.
Lawrie had kept a bogey off his card as well until his approach to the tricky ninth finished on the wall on the edge of the water. He took a penalty drop, but could not get up and down.
McIlroy, who has girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki with him for support this week, said: "I was pretty slow starting off and after my best shot of the day on the seventh three-putted from four feet.
"I just needed to get something to happen, made a nice birdie on nine and went on a run from there. Seeing nine under on the leaderboard early is tough - you think you should be doing better."
World No 4 Martin Kaymer did eagle the last and that was for a 66 as well, while John Daly - fourth last week in Qatar - had a 71 that included a triple-bogey 7 on the ninth.

JAMES BYRNE ONE OFF THE PACE IN PHILIPPINE OPEN

FROM THE ASIAN TOUR WEBSITE
Manila: Unheralded Lu Tze-shyan of Chinese Taipei was the unlikeliest of names to join a leaderboard logjam after the first round of the US$300,000 ICTSI Philippine Open today.
The 31-year-old Lu, who has made two cuts in 26 starts on the Asian Tour, battled to a three-under-par 69 late in the day to make it a six-way tie with Singaporean Mardan Mamat, Japan’s Azuma Yano and Americans Matthew Rosenfeld, Ben Fox and Anthony Kang, a former Philippine Open champion, at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club’s East course.
Filipino veteran Frankie Minoza, chasing a third Open win, newcomer Charles Hong and Mars Pucay led the local brigade with identical 70s to lie one back with talented Thai Thanyakon Khrongpha and Qualifying School graduates James Byrne of Scotland and Australian Wade Orsmby.
Byrne, who missed the cut on his debut on the Asian Topur, had a bogey at the third - the only blemish on his card - followed by birdies at the sixth, long 13th and 14th.
Lu, the nephew of multiple Asian Tour winner Lu Wen-teh, was five-under with four holes to play but dropped two late bogeys to fall back into the joint lead in Asia’s oldest national championship, which is being beamed live on the Asian Tour’s global television platform which reaches over 200 countries.
“I putted well. Holed quite a few 10 foot putts and some long ones. Overall, I played okay. I saw that I was leading and I was happy. But I got a bit nervous as well. On the third hole (his 12th), the TV cameras started to follow me. This is the first time I’m playing well on the Asian Tour and I wasn’t used to it,” said Lu, who started his round with four straight birdies from the 12th hole.
A career first top-10 last season has provided the inspiration for Lu to try to emulate his famous uncle, who holds five wins on the region’s elite circuit. Wen-teh waited at the clubhouse to give the joint leader a pat on the back after the younger Lu completed his round.
“I caddied for my uncle on Tour for three years from 2007 to 2009 and I learned a lot. His technique, the way he thinks on the golf course is very good. It was very good experience. I will treat tomorrow as another normal day,” he said.
The 44-year-old Mardan, a two-time winner on the Asian Tour, said words of advice from Filipino great Minoza helped him tame the notorious East course, which yielded only 19 under par rounds today.
“As you know, the course is not playing easy. You need a lot of patience. I had dinner with Frankie on Tuesday and he’s got a lot of experience playing on this course. He said to be patient and to expect that things are going to happen. That’s good advice as I’ve not played here for a long time,” said Mardan, whose five birdies were from close range.
“I’ve got a lot of respect for this golf course. I hit it good and I’m glad I holed some putts today. Hopefully, the next three days will be the same.”
Yano, a three-time Japan Tour winner and playing on a sponsor’s invite, shot six birdies against three bogeys. Like Mardan, he said playing defensively at Wack Wack is the key to a good score. “With the small greens, you’ve got to hit good shots. It’s tough to get birdies as the greens have some slopes on them,” said Yano.
Rosenfeld was delighted to be in the mix, especially after overhauling his golf swing just two weeks before a third visit to the Asian Tour Qualifying School in January. He said he was hitting “shanks” with the new swing prior to regaining his playing rights in Asia.
“I got the juices flowing out there a little bit. I’ve not had a good start in a little while. The key is not getting too upset,” said the American.
After enduring a “bad” year in 2011, Rosenfeld opted for a new swing coach and the results have been encouraging. “It worked today but there are some loose shots out there. It’s a 180 degree change from what I was doing before. First week, I was shanking it six out of 10 shots. We had to bring it back down as I was going to Q-school. I’m probably about 15 or 20 percent of what I’m supposed to be doing,” he said.
Some 13 years after securing his maiden Tour victory at the Philippine Open, Kang was back in the hunt once more thanks to four birdies against a lone bogey. “It’s very special. Every time I come back, I feel this is basically the place where it all started,’ said Kang, who finished top-10 at the season-opening event in Myanmar last week.
“Before I went out, I talked to Mo Joong-kyung and he told me to make lots of pars and that was my plan. I got off to a fast start with birdies on the first two holes and played solid. Just hitting greens and fairways which made the round a lot easier. It was nice.”
