SCOTS QUARTET UNDER PRESSURE IN ASIAN Q SCHOOL STAGE 1

It will take some last-round fireworks from Lee Harper, Clarke Lutton, Derek McKenzie and Greg Nicolson if they are to join the exempt James Byrne and Simon Dunn in the field for the Final Stage of the Asian Tour Qualifying School, teeing off in Thailand next Wednesday.
Only the top 20 per cent at each of the four venues being used this week for Stage 1 will go forward after Saturday's final rounds. With roughly 80 competitors at each course, that means only the top 16 or so from each will advance.
Lee Harper (Archerfield Links) is the best placed after a 72 for 215 at the Majestic Creek course but even so he is in joint 27th position, needing to climb about 11 places with his fourth round performance.
Anglo-Scot Clarke Lutton shot a 68 for 218 but he is back in a tie for 40th place on 218 at the same venue.
At Lakeview, Derek McKenzie is joint 33rd after a 74 for 224 while Lothians man Greg Nicolson's hopes were dashed when he took 86 blows for a three-round tally of 234, leaving him out of the hunt in joint 74th place.

The players will arrive at Son Gual on Monday, January 16 before a pre- championship pro-am on Tuesday when a field of invited amateurs will partner the tour pros, including The Seve Ballesteros Foundation Chief Executive, Ivan Ballesteros.
“I really think this tour gives the opportunity to young players and giving them an opportunity to reach their goals. PGA professionals and tournament directors Alan Tait and Nigel Scott-Smith who founded the Tour are equally excited about the championship next week. "I am enormously pleased with the Tour this year and I am sure the continued support from Optical Express will improve golf at the highest level in Scotland in the years to come, which has been long overdue. I am personally very proud as I have been chipping away at getting a Tour established like this for 12 years now, and it gives me great satisfaction to finally see things moving in the right direction.”

IRISH PRO AND AMATEUR BODIES TO WORK ON NEW STRATEGY

Leaders of the PGA Irish Region, Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) and the Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU) have come together to commence work on a new strategy for golf in Ireland.
This strategy will ensure that the three organisations are well positioned to avail of new opportunities and meet all challenges facing the sport in Ireland over the next eight years. The review process is supported by the Irish Sports Council and Sport Northern Ireland.
The three organisations will examine how they can best work together to achieve shared objectives including: increasing participation in golf, continuing international success, developing a common high performance plan especially in the light of golf becoming an Olympic sport and examining the programmes, services, and support required to develop players from junior through to elite level.
The group, which is aiming to produce a joint strategy for the sport, will be chaired by an independent chairman Redmond O'Donoghue.
O'Donoghue has been a senior figure in Irish business life for many years and currently is chairman of both Failte Ireland and Good Food Ireland.
This process is aimed at how best the organisations can work together to maximise the potential for golf, share ideas , information and best practice in order to advance the game in Ireland.
O'Donoghue commented: " Irish Golf has been extraordinarily successful, particularly in recent times. Therefore, this is a very good time to build for the future - a future that is very exciting.
"Ireland has an enviable track record in producing some of the best golfers in the world; and we have over 200,000 players who are members of the GUI and ILGU.
"Golf will be part of the Olympics for the first time in Rio in 2016, therefore, it is vital that Ireland should prepare well in advance to ensure that our top male and female golfers can perform at the highest levels. There are challenges ahead and it is timely to examine how players, clubs and members can be best supported."
The three organisations have identified the need and the opportunity to develop a strong, coherent, overarching strategy for golf which will provide a focus and clear direction to continue the work they do together and separately and provide a pathway that will enable them to strengthen and improve these efforts.
The agenda of the group does not include the possible merger of the golf organisations. The group aims to complete its work within six months.

STEADY AS A ROCK - ROBERT LEADS WEATHER-HIT JOBURG OPEN

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Robert Rock holds a one shot lead after two days of the Joburg Open, where further thunderstorms prevented the conclusion of the second round.
The34-year-old Englishman from Armitage, nr Lichfield, Staffordshire, added a four under par 67 on Royal Johannesburg and Kensington’s West Course to his brilliant 65 over the tougher East layout for an 11 under par halfway total.
After four hours lost to lightning on the first day, Rock’s first task was to complete his opening round, and birdies at the 17th and 18th left him one behind overnight leaders Jamie Elson and Damien McGrane.
An eagle at the par five second was followed by bogeys at the eighth and 12th, with a birdie at the ninth keeping the Italian Open champion in contention.
But a hat-trick of birdies from the 13th put Rock in charge of the tournament, as he responded to his second dropped shot with a tee shot to ten feet at the 13th.
Rock almost holed his approach at the 14th, eventually sinking a six foot birdie putt and then finding the green in two at the par five next and two-putting to complete his scoring for the day.
At 11 under Rock leads South Africans Jbe Kruger and Branden Grace by one, after both carded second rounds of 66 on the West Course.
Another South African, Michiel Bothma, is the only player in the clubhouse on nine under after a 66 on the West Course, while his compatriot George Coetzee was on the same mark after playing the first six holes on the East course in three under par.
Elson did not get to hit a ball on the second day, and will now tee off on Saturday morning. Sitting level with the Englishman on eight under are South African Lyle Rowe (69) and Glasgpw's Scott Jamieson (67).
McGrane bogeyed the first on the East Course and after three holes is on seven under, in a group that includes two-time US Open Champion Retief Goosen.
“I didn’t play as well today, but I managed to put up a score, which was good,” said Rock.
Grace dropped shots on the eighth and 18th, but he carded seven birdies in a round which had him hopeful of an early success after he regained his European Tour card at Qualifying School in December.
“I didn’t really make too many mistakes out there today,” he said. “I just missed some putts which could have made the round much better.
“It’s been a bit frustrating not getting the win, but sooner or later the consistency is going to pay off.”
Kruger is also yet to win on The European Tour, despite putting himself in contention at Leopard Creek in November’s SA Open Championship.
“I don’t really feel that a win is just around the corner,” he said. “I’ve been feeling this way for the last three years, so I’m not really expecting anything. But I’m gaining a lot of experience and becoming a better golfer.”

HOLMAN LEADS ASSUE MASTER OF AMATEURS BY FIVE STROKES

The overnight leader in the 2012 Australian Master of the Amateurs, 20 year
old Nathan Holman has tightened his grip on the title ahead of the final round
at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club.
With rounds of 67, 72 and 69, Holman now holds a five-shot lead over this field of 54 elite amateur golfers.
New Zealander Ben Campbell shot into contention with his round today of
seven under. Campbell, like the rest of the field, enjoyed the milder conditions
after the wild storms of the previous 24 hours.
But his was not the best round of the day. 17 year old West Australian Oliver
Goss shot 64, just one shot off the West Course record that’s survived for 50
years.
It was a case of what might have been for the teenager who lost a ball on the

The shot of the day belonged to Englishman Ashley Chesters ... a hole-in-one
on the 202 metre par three 16th. And it’s not the first time the 22 year old has
scored an ace. It is in fact his fourth, the last one was eight years ago.
Queenslander Daniel Nisbet starts the final round in striking distance
of the leader. So too is world number five, Kelly Kraft from the USA and the
ever consistent Tasmanian McCarthy. He has had rounds of 72 71 and 71.
The stage is set for a day of high quality golf tomorrow and a fascinating finale.
