DICK LEADS BY THREE IN WEATHER-DELAYED NEWLANDS TROPHY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Defending champion Allyn Dick (Kingsknowe) is the clear halfway leader in the SGU Order of Merit 72-hole competition, the Newlands Trophy, at Lanark GC this weekend.
After the longest day in the tournament's history - there were two suspensions because of the threat of lightning and bad weather - players were still out on the course after 9pm with light fading fast.
Scotland international Dick (pictured by Tom Ward Photography), Scottish mid-amateur champion in 2005 and 2006 and Cameron Corbett Vase winner in 2009, tagged a second-round 66 on to a 68 to go three shots clear of the field on six-under-par 134.
Although now listing Kingsknowe as his home club, Dick has strong Lanarkshire connections. He has been club champion of Shotts for the past seven years.
His closest rivals going into Sunday's final two rounds are Sam Binning (Ranfurly Castle) (69-68) and first-round leader Steven Rennie (Drumpellier) (67-70).
A total of 41 players survived the halfway cut with two-round totals of 151 or better.

DARREN CLARKE GIVES HIMSELF A MAJOR CHANCE OF VICTORY

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Darren Clarke, who played his first Open Championship 20 years ago and has looked on as so many friends and rivals have lifted the famous trophy aloft, leads by a shot with 18 holes to go at Sandwich.
The 42-year-old Ulsterman, picture by courtesy of Getty Images (c),  overcame rain, wind and all the inevitable pressures of setting the pace in the biggest event in golf to fire a superb third round 69.
There were only two rounds better than that all day, but the fact that one of the two 68s came from Dustin Johnson means that the American is now the chief danger to Clarke's hopes of continuing the remarkable story of Irish success in the last four years.
After Dubliner Padraig Harrington's back-to-back Opens and a US PGA Championship title as well, Graeme McDowell captured the US Open last year and then compatriot Rory McIlroy succeeded him last month.
Now their fellow Northern Irishman Clarke, playing the 54th Major of his career but without a top-ten finish in them for a decade, stands five under par and looks down on the rest of the field.
He knows he might never have a better chance to lift The Claret Jug denied him in 1997 by a closing 65 from American Justin Leonard.
But Johnson has a burning desire too after what happened to him last season.
The 27-year-old American led the US Open by three with a round to go at Pebble Beach, but let in McDowell by carding a closing 82.
Then two months later he thought he was in a play-off for the US PGA Championship after a closing bogey, but was given a two-stroke penalty for grounding his club on sand on the final hole.
In joint third place on two under are Thomas Björn, the Dane who missed out on the 2003 Open at the course after leading by three with four to play, and American Rickie Fowler.
Lucas Glover shot 73 playing with Clarke, while Fowler matched Johnson's 68 partnering fellow 22-year-old Rory McIlroy, whose chances of a US Open-Open double hang by a thread now with a 74 dropping him nine behind.
That included driving out of bounds on the long 14th and running up a double bogey 7, but McIlroy did then recall that in 1999 Paul Lawrie was ten back at Carnoustie and won.
Darren Clarke said: "From tee to green I can't really play any better. I had one of those days where I had full control of my ball flight, but I didn't have the speed with my putting at all.
"If somebody had said before the start I could have 69, though, I would have bitten their hand off."
As for the ovations he received he laughed and replied: "I think most of the crowd identify with a guy who's not quite an athlete and likes a pint.
"I have a chance to realise a dream now and that would be fantastic.
"I've done just about everything else. I've been fortunate to win Ryder Cups and World Championships, but a Major has so far eluded me.
"I've a pretty decent chance. A major is always tough to win, but I've put myself in position."
Johnson said: "Obviously I've been in this situation a few times, so I think the more and more you can put yourself in it the more comfortable you get.
"I know what to expect. I know how to approach it and what to do."
The golfing gods were with Clarke, because it was only over the opening stretch that he had to contend with the worst of the conditions.
After truly foul weather had taken most of the overnight back markers out of the hunt, Clarke made a dream start, sinking a 15 foot putt on the opening green for the only birdie all day on the 452 yard hole.
He had a chance to go two in front on the next, but missed from five feet.
The rain had thankfully eased by then and Clarke might also have been the one player to register a two on the 206 yard third, only to fail from 18 feet.
His lead was two by then, however, with Björn bogeying the gruelling fourth to hand back the shot he had picked up with a 20 footer on the second.
That fourth proved the toughest hole again, even though it was reduced from 495 to 469 yards because of the weather.
It saw 45 bogeys, six double bogey 6s, a 7 from ex-winner Paul Lawrie and an 8 from American Spencer Levin, yet Clarke hit his second shot to five feet again and had to be disappointed not to stretch his advantage further.
It looked even more costly when he three-putted the next and although he made amends for that with a two-putt birdie from long range at the downwind seventh another bogey at the next led to him being caught.
Johnson did it with birdies at the tenth and 12th after turning in a level par 35, but a bogey on the 459 yard 13th handed the outright lead to Clarke again as he started the back nine.
A chip to six feet by the American at the 547 yard 14th brought them back level, only for Clarke to roll home a 12 footer on the 12th.
Johnson made it four birdies in six holes with an eight foot putt at the 15th and was back on terms, but he left a 15 foot par putt short at the 17th and parred the last.
Clarke then parred his way through the last six holes and was happy to do that at the last as, like the third and fourth, there was not a single birdie there all day.

FRENCHMAN HEBERT TAKES CHARGE OF CREDIT SUISE CHALLENGE

From Challenge Tour Press Officer Paul Symes
Benjamin Hebert is hoping to maintain French golf’s ‘feelgood factor’ after taking charge of the Credit Suisse Challenge.
Hebert has been inspired to raise his game by the recent victories on the Challenge Tour from his compatriots Edouard Dubois and Anthony Snobeck, respectively second and 15th in the Rankings, and at the Alstom Open de France by Thomas Levet.
The 24 year old from Brive is aiming to become the third French winner on this season’s Challenge Tour after a four-birdie round of 67 on the third day of the €150,000 event moved him to 12 under par, three shots clear of the chasing pack. Incredibly, Hebert has made just one bogey over the course of the three days at Golf Sempachersee near Lucerne, Switzerland, and believes his near-faultless displays are amongst his very best since he turned professional in 2009.
He said: “My driving was good again and my irons were also working very well, especially on the par threes. I hardly made any mistakes today or for the last two days, so this week has to be one of the best of my career so far.
“With Anthony winning once and Edouard twice already, it made me realise that it was possible for me too. French golf at the moment is enjoying some good times, both on the Challenge Tour and the main Tour, with Thomas’ win two weeks ago. So I thought maybe this week would be my turn!
“I’m obviously confident for tomorrow because I know I’m playing well. I’m sure I will be a little bit nervous, but after the first few holes hopefully I’ll calm down and get into my usual routine. There aren’t any leaderboards on the course until the eighth hole, which is actually quite good because it means I can just concentrate on my own game without having to think too much about what anyone else is doing.
"If I can keep concentrating and not make too many mistakes, I should be alright.”
Hoping to capitalise on any jitters from the Frenchman are the in-form Italian Federico Colombo and the English duo of James Heath and Steven Tiley, all of whom share second place on nine under par.
The trio are all searching for their first victories on the Challenge Tour, but Colombo is confident of ending his drought after continuing the fine recent form which has seen him climb to third place in the Rankings. The 23 year old, who notched five birdies in his round of 68, is aiming to keep the title in Italian hands following his friend and compatriot Alessandro Tadini’s victory 12 months ago.
Colombo said: “I was disappointed to bogey the 17th, but to come back with a birdie at the 18th made me feel much better about life. I played OK, but will probably have to play a little bit better on the final day if I’m going to win. I think the forecast for the last round isn’t great, but I seem to play well when the weather’s bad. So hopefully I can use that to my advantag
Tiley is also used to testing conditions, having grown up playing links golf at Royal Cinque Ports near Royal St George’s, the host venue for this week’s Open Championship. The 28 year old carded three birdies in a round of 69, which he deemed solid rather than spectacular.
Tiley said: “I didn’t get off to the best of starts, but the birdie on the fifth got me going. I putted quite nicely and my short game was also good, but I was disappointed I didn’t create as many chances as I would’ve liked on the way in. If the weather’s good tomorrow I’ll probably have to make a few more birdies to stand any chance of winning, but if it’s not then it might be more a case of just trying to hang in there and take your chances when they come along.”
Heath’s round of 67 – the joint lowest of the day with Hebert – was a mixed bag, with three bogeys cancelling out his seven birdies.

RENNIE (67) SETS PACE IN NEWSLANDS TROPHY FIRST ROUND

Drumpellier's Steven Rennie set the pace with a three-under-par 67 on the weather-delayed first day of this weekend's SGU Order of Merit 72-hole men's open, the Newlands Trophy, at Lanark Golf Club.
Play had to be suspended at one stage because of the threat of lightning strikes in the area.
Rennie had a one-stroke lead from six players - Kyle McClung (Wigtownshire Co), Allyn Dick (Kingsknowe), Horacio Leon (Chile), Conor O'Neil (Pollok), Pauul Ferrier (Baberton) and Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie).
Fraser McKenna (Balmore), who beat Robertson in a play-off for the Sutherland Chalice four-round open tournament at Dumfries last weekend, had a 70.

JACK WAGNER LEADS CELEBRITY GOLF AT LAKE TAHOE

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
STATELINE, Nevada (AP) — Self-described "pip-squeak" actor Jack Wagner made seven birdies Friday to jump out to the first-round lead at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe.
Former NHL All-Star Jeremy Roenick and ex-quarterback Chris Chandler were tied for second at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.
Others in the hunt included hockey's Mike Modano and Brett Hull, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and former pitcher Rick Rhoden, who has won the event a record eight times.
Five years ago, Wagner became the only non-professional athlete to win in the tournament's 22-year history. He had seven birdies and one bogey Friday for a total of 29 points in the modified Stableford scoring system. He shot a 4-under 68 in a regular format.
"The great part about this event is we've kicked around together for 20-some years now," said Wagner, who tied for second last year and has finished outside the top 10 only five times in 21 previous appearances.
"I think these guys kind of like that they have a little pip-squeak actor they can play with," he said. "Someone who is a little different who can actually hit it kind of out there with them, though not near as far."
"These guys hit it like Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson. They actually are that explosive," Wagner said.
Roenick rolled home a 40-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th to vault into a tie for second with 24 points in the scoring system that awards six points for eagle, three for birdie, one for par, none for bogey and minus-2 for double bogey or worse.
Modano finished the day with 20 points, followed by Hull, Romo and Rhoden all with 19. John Smoltz had 18, followed by Vinny Del Negro, Brett Saberhagen, Vince Coleman and Tim Brown at 17. Michael Jordan had 16.
Roenick said Rhoden is capable of putting up 30 points in a single round, but that Wagner is playing solid.
"I've got to try to get into Jack's head a little bit tomorrow and let him know the athletes are coming after him," Roenick said. "Mentally he is a grinder, but physically, maybe, hopefully we'll roll around in the sand a little bit tomorrow."
Wagner shot back, "I'll kill him with my outfit. It's about what you wear, dudes."
As usual, some of the biggest fan interest was at the bottom of the leaderboard where former NBA MVP Charles Barkley and actor Kevin Nealon entertained the gallery more with one-liners than their golf.
"Come on Charles, get it off the tee box," Nealon encouraged his playing partner on the par-3 No. 7.
He didn't. It went about 10 yards. But Barkley's next swing - a one-handed six iron - sent the ball 160 yards to the fringe of the green to loud cheers.
Nealon knocked his next shot only a few feet into a greenside sand trap, so it was Barkley's turn to needle.
"Anybody have a half of a Snickers bar?" he asked the crowd as he waited for Nealon to try again.
Another big group was following a trio of actors - Ray Romano, Dennis Haysbert and Brian Baumgartner - although at least one fan didn't know who all of them were.
As they waited to tee off on No. 18, the man mistook Haysbert for Jordan and yelled, "Michael, basketball has not been the same since you retired."
It drew a laugh from players and observers alike. Then, as Baumgartner - who plays the portly Kevin on NBC's "The Office" - prepared to hit his drive, Romano shouted at him: "Same to you Larry Bird."
