PGA EUROPRO TOUR REPORT, FIRST-ROUND SCORES

On a day of low shooting and fine performances, Goddard (Hendon) enjoyed a flawless round of 65 (-7) which included birdies at the first, seventh, ninth, 14th, 15th, 16th and 18th.
Goddard has played in seven of the eight PGA EuroPro Tour events so far this season and is currently 24th in the Order of Merit after top ten finishes at Burhill in Surrey and Longhirst Hall in Northumberland.
However, with £10,000 going to the winner of the three-day competition it could catapult him up to fifth spot and put him in contention to qualify for next season’s Challenge Tour.
Chris Hanson (Woodsome Hall, Huddersfield ) is guaranteed a spot at the higher level next season but continued his fine form with another excellent performance, which included an eagle at the par-five 18th.
He ended the first day one behind Goddard on 66 (-6), with Chris Brook ( Bramcote Golf Academy , Nuneaton ) also on -6.
A host of players went round in 67 (-5) including Toby Burden (Hayling, Hampshire), Paul Grannell (Vale Royal Abbey, Cheshire), Darryn Lloyd, Zack Saltman (Archerfield, East Lothian) and John Gallagher (Swanston, Edinburgh).
Local golfer Tommy Fleetwood, who has played in the Walker Cup before, started the tournament as 10/1 betting favourite with SkyBet and is well placed as he is also on -5.
Burden’s round including an eagle at the third, Saltman made an eagle at the 14th, while Adam Runcie eagled the third but then double bogeyed the fourth.
Graeme Clark (Doncaster), Jamie Abbott (Fynn Valley, Suffolk) and James Busby (The Shropshire) were second, third and fourth respectively in the Order of Merit but will all need good rounds on Thursday to make the cut.
Clark double-bogeyed the fifth, Abbott did likewise on the 14th, while Busby’s round included double bogeys at both the fifth and 12th.
More than 160 players entered the tournament and they will play a second round on Thursday before the top 50 and ties advance to the final round on Friday.
The action is being filmed and Matchroom Sport will produce a two-hour highlights package, which will be broadcast on Sky Sports on Wednesday, August 17.
