EGU SEND BURNETT AND DOBSON TO PERUVIAN CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH GOLF UNION
James Burnett (Sleaford, Lincolnshire) and Hugo Dobson (Fynn Valley, Suffolk), both members of the EGU’s A Squad, will attempt to extend England’s fine record in the event when they compete in the 23rd Peruvian Amateur Championship at Lima Golf Club from April 13 to 16.
Burnett 19, has been capped at under 16 and boys levels. A quarter finalist in the 2009 British Boys Championship, he also finished runner-up that year in the Midland Youth Championship and the Lincolnshire Championship. Last year, when he reached the last eight of the English Amateur, Burnett lost in a three-way playoff for the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, was fifth in the Fairhaven Trophy and tied sixth in the McEvoy Trophy. He also represented GB&I against Europe in the Jacques Leglise Trophy.
Dobson, 19, is a former English Schools under 16 champion and Suffolk Junior champion who secured his biggest title to date when he won the inaugural South East of England Links Championship at Royal St George’s last year. He also finished runner-up in the South East Junior Championship in 2009, when he made his England debut in the victorious Boys Home Internationals team at Hankley Common.
England’s fine record in the Peruvian Amateur began with Neil Chaudhuri from Leicestershire who shared the title with Mario Maya of Venezuela in 2005, the first year the EGU sent players to the championship.
A year later, Surrey’s James Morrison finished runner-up while he and John Parry from Yorkshire were second in the team event.
In 2007, Jamie Abbott from Suffolk and Kent’s James Smith finished fourth in the team competition, while in 2009, Adam Best from Cleveland was equal fourth in the individual when representing an English Students team. Joint fourth place was also filled by Ben Loughrey from Wiltshire in last year’s championship.
The format for the Peruvian Amateur is 72 holes of stroke play with both players’ scores counting over all four rounds for the team event.
