English players dominated the leaderboard at the end of the opening day of the Portuguese international men's amateur championship at Montado Golf Resort near Lisbon today.
Eddie Pepperell led the way with a four-under-par 68, one shot better than compatriots Craig Hinton, Callum Shinkwin and Jonathan Bell.
Only Antonio Hortal (Spain), who also had a 69, prevented a complete take-over at the top by the English.
With the SGU Elite Squad still in South Africa, Scotland's entries were limited to three players - Fraser McKenna, Allyn Dick and Peter Latimer.
Young McKenna, pictured above, did the best of the three, a one-under-par 72 which put in in joint 12th position, a creditable effort in an international field of 119 players.
McKenna started at the 10th with one of his four bogeys in the round but settled to birdie the 16th, 17th, third, fourth and eighth in halves of 35-36.
Dick, eager to consolidate his international team place he gained in last year's Home Internationals, had a disappointing 80 (40-40) with only one birdie, at the 16th, but two double bogeys, at the fifth and 13th. That left Allyn in joint 95th position.
Latimer had an 82 for a share of 108th place. Peter had halves of 42-40, including only one bogey, at the fourth, and a triple bogey 7 at the seventh.
