Longmuir chasing Woburn leader Mason

By RODDY WILLIAMS
European Tour website editor and senior press officer
Anglo-Scot Bill Longmuir is in the hunt for a ninth Senior Tour title but faces a tough challenge to catch leader Carl Mason with the Englishman chasing a record 24th title.
Longmuir carded a round of three under 69 over the Duke’s Course at Woburn with a bogey-birdie-bogey finish that leaves him three off the lead on six under par 138, but to catch Mason he will have to hope for more luck on the greens.
He said: “I am still striking the ball beautifully but need to hole a few more putts. I didn’t hole anything out there today but if I can get a few to drop I’ll be right there challenging.”
But Mason, who won the title in both 2006 and 2007, will look to make it a hat-trick and surpass Tommy Horton as the most prolific winner the Tour has known, having tied the record earlier this year with victory in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland.
Leading after round one, Mason recorded an eagle and two birdies in his first eleven holes, and after two back nine bogeys looked like upsetting an otherwise solid round, a birdie at 18 made sure he extended his lead going into the final round.
He said: “This place has been very kind to me and I hope it continues. It is a real test and you can’t relax for one second. There is danger with every shot but I just have a nice feel for the place. And if I was to notch that 24th win, there couldn’t be a better place to do it.”
Irishman Smyth had been tied with Mason after round one, and a very steady round of 71 leaves him just two behind and his nearest challengers.
It was not just the play of the leaders that caught the eye during this second round, with early fireworks in the shape of Martin Poxon’s double eagle run that saw him hole-in-one at the third and hole his second at the fourth.
The Englishman struggled other than that, but his close friend DJ Russell, upon hearing news of his accomplishment, went out and had a hole-in-one himself at the same hole, using it as the springboard to a six under to lie three back of Mason.
He said: “I was three under early on, then I was five, and suddenly a good round came out of it. Woburn has never been my favourite hunting ground as I tend to spend most of the day in the trees, but luckily today when I went in I had a shot out. Long may that continue.”
Defending Champion Tony Johnstone of Zimbabwe also had a good day shooting 68 to lie five back on four under par alongside debutant Gary Wolstenholme, England’s most capped amateur, who shot a 72, Welshman Ian Woosnam (72) and Scot Andrew Oldcorn (71) in a share of fifth place.

BRONZE FOR SCOTS MEN; GOLD FOR SCOTS WOMEN

Scotland won the bronze medals in the European senior men's amateur team golf championship at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire today
They beat Spain 3-2 in the play-off for third place.
The gold medals and the European title were won by defending champions England who beat the No 1 seeds, Ireland, 4 1/2-1/2 in the final.
Switzerland went into a 1-0 lead when Enrique Fontecilla and Juan Carolos beat Ian Taylor (Royal Burgess) and Colin Christy (Kilmacolm) by one hole in a tight foursomes match. The sides had been all square at the turn.
Scotland then took the next three games for a winning lead.
Tony Stafford (Dun Ochil) beat Juan Ortin by 4 and 2 after leading by one hole and the turn and by two after 12.
Former Walker Cup man Scott MacDonald found his true form on the final day. He beat Angel Macias by 3 and 2 after leading by one-hole at the turn and by two holes after 15.
David Gardner (Broomieknowe) clinched a Scotland victory when he won by 3 and 2 over Gustava Larrazabal after being four holes up at the turn.
With the overall match won, Jim Watt (Edzell) lost the final singles by 3 and 2 to Francisco Maestro who had been one up at the turn and two up after 12.
In the final, the front-running Irish, No 1 qualifiers by a comfortable margin and fairly easy winners of their matches leading up to the final, lost their momentum and form just when they needed it most.
Doug Arnold and former world speedway champion Dave Jessup took the fouromes tie by 3 and 2 over Tom Cleary and Michael Quirke.
Then Alan Squires, all square at the turn but two up after 12, won by 2 and 1 over Maurice Kelly.
Andrew Carman clinched an England victory by delivering the third point. He survived a sticky start - two down after three to the experienced Arthur Piersse - to be all square at the turn on his way to a 3 and 2 win.
Chris Reynolds, three up after six holes, bon wy 3 and 2 against Adrian Morrow.
Former Walker Cup player and captain Garth McGimpsey halved the remaining singles against Philip Slatere who was two up after three and two up at the turn.

OMEGA EUROPEAN MASTERS

Jimenez still leads by three despite

calling penalty shot on himself

FROM THE ASIAN TOUR WEBSITE
Spanish veteran Miguel Angel Jimenez retained his overnight three-shot advantage after a pulsating third round at the Omega European Masters today.
The charismatic 46-year-old from Malaga - who will be playing in the Ryder Cup match at Celtic Manor - finished strongly with two birdies over his closing four holes for a three-under-par 68 at the sun-splashed Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, Switzerland to lead from Ryder Cup team-mate Italian Edoardo Molinari, who made a vital par at the last for also a 68.
Italian prodigy Matteo Manassero battled to a 69 to lie a further stroke back alongside England ’s Steve Webster, who charged into contention with a fine 64 at the €2 million event jointly sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
South Korean teenage star Noh Seung-yul, who currently leads the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit, moved up to tied seventh place with a solid 67 but will enter the final round eight shots behind the man nicknamed “The Mechanic”.
Jimenez, chasing an 18th career victory and third win of the season, fought valiantly after a brief stumble on his homeward stretch. But he ended the day with a flourish by holing a 15-foot birdie putt on the last hole for a three-day total of 17-under-par 196.
In his 22nd straight appearance at the picturesque Crans Montana , Jimenez knows the timing is right for him to finally win the Omega European Masters title, which will match nicely with his other victories in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and French O pen this year.
“My aim tomorrow is to keep playing well and enjoy myself on the golf course and take this title. That’s what I would love to do. Three shots ahead and 18 holes to go, you have to keep patient,” said the Ryder Cup star.
“I missed a few short ones at the sixth and ninth holes but this (on the 18th) was good to compensate.”
Jimenez’s lead could have been wider if not for a self-imposed one-shot penalty when he inadvertently picked up his ball on the 10th hole when he thought a sprinkler head was in the path of his swing.
“Yes, nobody knew. Only Molinari, when I picked the ball up close to the sprinkler head. I put the tee down and picked up the ball but I should have checked first to see if it interfered before I made that decision. I kind of lost my mind a little bit! I told Edoardo I picked up the ball. Sorry,” said Jimenez of the eventual bogey 5.
The in-form Molinari, winner of last week’s Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, which earned him a maiden Ryder Cup call-up, produced a gutsy eight-foot par save on 18 to stay within striking reach.
“I think it was huge. I was very tired and I wasn’t playing well and I wasn’t making putts on the back nine. Obviously from being three or four behind is a massive difference,” he said.
“Front nine was flawless golf but on the back, especially after making bogey on 13, I felt tired all of the sudden. But luckily, I’m only three behind. Hopefully, I can hole some putts and put some pressure on Miguel tomorrow.”
The 19-year-old Noh moved up the leaderboard with a round that included an eagle, six birdies and four bogeys. After swapping two birdies against two bogeys on his outward nine, the 2007 Asian Tour’s Rookie of the Year showed why he is one of Asia ’s rising stars with a scintillating back nine which included four birdies and one eagle for a 204 total.
Shot of the day came on the par five 14th when he smashed a five iron from 225 yards to four feet for his eagle three. “That was a good shot,” he smiled.
The difference in Noh’s round was the putter. On the front nine, he kept burning the edges of the cup but he comfortably holed out when opportunities came knocking on the door, thanks to some crisp iron play.
“I felt the same during the round. The putts just went in on the back nine,” said Noh.
