Dear and McAlpine only Scots to
-
survive Alps Tour cut

FROM THE ALPS TOUR WEBSITE
Mother Nature was the winner at the second day of the Slovenia Open. Rain and wind invited themselves at Ptuj Open and these diabolic partners made the field give in.
The score of the lead increased to five under par and now a group of three players are sharing the lead - Frenchman Matthieu Bey and Spaniard Jorge Garcia Fernandez managed to stay there and another Iberian player, Carlos Balmaseda, joined them.
Carlos is very well known for gaudy clothes and very noticeable shoes. He shot 69 today and succeed in not dropping more than two shots.
Compare to yesterday when many eagles were achieved at the 18th, the last hole was today a scene of lots of double bogeys.
Despite the awful weather, three players signed for the best score of the day, a 68. No surprise to find an Irish player in this group : Richard Kilpatrick. Also there were Switzerland's Jann Schmid and Austrian amateur Manuel Trappel.
In these conditions, the cut is quite high: +6.
The best Slovenian player is professional Matjaz Gojcic. Amateur Aljaz Brumen made the cut as well.
Agathe Séron

SCOTSWATCH: Only two Scots, the consistent Gavin Dear and Kevin McAlpine beat the cut (148 was the limit 36-hole aggregate). Dear is lying joint 13th after rounds of 71 and 72 for 146 - six off the pace. McAlpine qualified but went backwards on the leaderboard after following a promising opening round of 70 with a 76 for 146.
The Saltman brothers, Zack and Elliot, both missed the cut by three shots. Zack slumped from 73 to an 81, while Elliot went the other way, returning a 71, which was nine shots better than his first-day score.
Steven Hume was another Scot who missed the cut by a few. He had scores of 78 and 81 for 159.

Jaco Van Zyl wins Nashua Challenge by five shots

FROM THE SUNSHINE TOUR WEBSITE
Jaco van Zyl pulled comfortably clear of the field with a three-under-par 69 today to take the Nashua Golf Challenge at Gary Player Country Club by a five-stroke margin with an eight-under-par total of 208.
He was challenged briefly when he made bogey 5 on the sixth, but he made birdie on eight, and then two more coming in – on 15 and 18 – to have daylight between himself and Jean Hugo and qualifier P H McIntyre who shared second place on 213.
It has been a remarkably consistent 2010 for Van Zyl, who recorded his eighth finish inside the top 15 in his 10th start of the year, and his second title after the Vodacom Business Origins of Golf event at Sishen on April 10.
The win vaulted him to sixth on the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit with R805,000 behind runaway leader Charl Schwartzel and has put him well on the road to bettering his 2009 season where he finished fourth.
It was a tough week on the Gary Player Country Club, and Van Zyl was able to weather what it threw at him better than the rest.
“You’ve got to be really patient around here and take what you can when you can,” he said. “And when the course doesn’t give you anything, you’ve got to keep the mistakes to a bare minimum.”
He made seven bogeys throughout the whole tournament, and – critically – just one in his final round.
McIntyre, who only got into the tournament by coming in the top 10 in the pre-qualifying round, moved into a share of the lead with Van Zyl on the 195-metre par-three 13th.
But he squandered the chance of pushing on for what could have been a maiden victory when he lost his tee shot on 14 and finished the hole with a treble-bogey 7.
He compounded his woes with a bogey on 15, but finished with a flourish when he nearly holed his third at the 18th for eagle. He tapped in for birdie and a final round of 71.
After McIntyre made that treble-bogey, Van Zyl responded with a 35-footer for birdie on 15 to effectively shut the door on any possible challenge.
Hugo was also in contention down the stretch, but, after he too birdied 13, he was unable to pick up another shot and, in fact, dropped one on the tough 17th.
With only six of the 40 players who made the cut finishing under par, the course was clearly in challenging shape: “It makes it nice and challenging,” said Van Zyl. “It’s not the same monotonous week-in and week-out sort of golf.”
He came close to winning last week in Swaziland, where he said he relished putting himself in position to win every week, but he’s keen to convert that form into a win in one of the Sunshine Tour’s big summer events.
“I always seem to peak at this time of the year which is a little bit too early or too late,” he said. “I may just shuffle the schedule around a bit towards the end of the year and see what happens then.”

Fernandez-Castano, Edberg share Mallorca Open lead

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano three-putted the last green to fall back into a tie with Sweden's Pelle Edberg at the Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca today.
Four times a winner on the European Tour but never on home soil, the 29 year old from Madrid kept a bogey off his card in the tricky conditions until he came to the short 18th.The Spaniard, whose last victory came with a play off success over Lee Westwood in the 2008 British Masters at The Belfry, could not find his best putting touch on the last but it was still an impressive round.
Fernandez-Castano was round in a two under par 68 as a result and with a day to go stands four under par alongside Edberg.
Joint halfway leader with James Kingston, Edberg followed up his stunning second round 64 with a 71, mixing three birdies with four bogeys. But that was better than Kingston managed. The 44 year old South African could not card a birdie and bogeys on the third, tenth, 12th and 14th meant a 74 and a drop into a tie for sixth place.
Australian Scott Hend had a best of the day 66 to improve from ninth to third and will resume only a shot off the pace.
One further back are Edberg's fellow countryman Peter Hanson and Spaniard Alejandro Canizares, while Bristol's Chris Wood is alongside Kingston and Dane Mark Haastrup.
Putts of nine and 20 feet on the sixth and difficult eighth took Fernandez-Castano to the turn in 33. His other birdie came on the 16th, although his drive was actually down an adjoining fairway, thanks to an eight footer, and he almost chipped in for another at the next.
Edberg, currently without a European Tour card after failing to come through the Qualifying School last November, got off to a rocky start with three bogeys in the first five holes. The 31 year old came back with birdies at the sixth, seventh and 12th, but could not salvage his par on the short 13th and three-putted for another bogey two holes later.
Hanson, who pipped Edberg to the SAS Masters in Stockholm two years ago, looked his biggest danger when he played the first 16 holes in five under par to be only one behind. But he bogeyed the last two, while Wood, having produced a brilliant birdie on the 17th, missed a three footer for another at the last and had to settle for a 68.
"It was a mixed bag - I couldn't get any momentum," said the Englishman who is hoping for his first European Tour title."Overall a 68 is a pretty good score, but I can't make a putt and it's very frustrating."
Hanson added: "The last two are tough holes, but you should be able to make par on them and it's a little disappointing. My putting is not where I want it to be."

North-east seize initiative in area team opener

By ROSS DUNCAN
Scottish Golf Union Press Officer
The North-east justified their tag as pre-championship favourites with a strong showing on the opening morning of the new-look Moneygate Scottish area team championship at Kinross.
Scotland star Philip McLean led the team from the front firing an impressive four-under par 69 on the Bruce course. The Peterhead man – winner of last month’s Edward Trophy – got off to a flyer with consecutive 3s at the opening three holes and added a birdie at the eighth to reach the turn in four-under. He spilled a shot the 12th but bounced back with a birdie at the 15th to be pleased with his opening round:
“I played steady golf for most of the morning and I’m pleased with my round. Overall the team has performed well this morning so hopefully the boys can come keep it going this afternoon. The new format seems to be popular among the players and it’s shaping up for a good weekend.”
McLean’s in-form team-mate Kris Nicol, fresh from runner-up finishes at the Lytham Trophy and Irish Stroke Play, looked set to continue that form reaching the turn in three-under par. However the Fraserburgh man’s touch deserted him on the back nine to finish with a level-par round of 73. Accumulatively, the North-east were one-under par for the morning rounds to seize the first round initiative.
Former Scottish youths champion Scott Borrowman blasted eight birdies in a superb six-under par 67 on the Bruce course to record the morning’s best individual score. The Clackmannanshire star took full advantage of the par-5s, with birdies at each of them and a birdie three on the final green delighted the Dollar golfer:
“It was nice to finish with a birdie after a very enjoyable round. Yesterday was the first time I’d played the course and it’s good fun to play, with lots of par fives and birdie chances on offer. I started really well the holed a great 20-foot putt on the seventh for par which kept my momentum going.”
“I’ve been really working hard on my game over the past month and it’s starting to pay off. Now would be the ideal time to hit form with this event and some big championships coming up. I like the new format and hopefully I can help the team get through to tomorrow’s knock-out stages.”
Lothians, the event’s most successful Area team, put in a solid opening round performance, with a fine two-under par on the more difficult Montgomery course from Craigielaw’s Mark Hillson, while Scottish boys champion Grant Forrest posted a one-under par 72 on the Bruce.
Former British boys finalist Fraser Fotheringham from Nairn opened with an excellent three-under par 70, while it was a mixed bag for defending champions Renfrewshire with the Kilmalcom duo of Matthew Clark and Andrew Farmer shooting rounds of 70 and 71 respectively.

Caddie mistake disqualifies struggling Jerry Rice

FROM THE PGA.COM WEBSITE
Maybe Jerry Rice should have stuck to football, NFL American Football that is.
The Hall of Fame receiver was disqualified from the Nationwide Tour event yesterdat because his caddie used a range-finding scope to check yardages. The disqualification came a day after Rice shot a 92, the highest round ever since the BMW Charity Pro-Am began in 1992.
"A rookie mistake that I made," Rice said with a smile. "So I got DQed."
Rice announced after a second-round 82 that he's done competing on golf's Triple-A circuit.
"Because I can't commit to golf the way I want to, this is probably my last Nationwide Tour" event, Rice said. "These guys, they're working their butts off and they deserve to be out here."
The error by his caddie means that Rice won't take part in Saturday's third round, the last before the celebrity event cuts the field for Sunday's finale.
Rice was in violation of Rule 14.3, which prevents competitors from using a yardage measuring device. His caddie checked the yardage scope several times during the round at The Carolina Country Club.
Rice was told in the scorer's tent after improving to an 82 at Bright's Creek Golf Club. The BMW Charity Pro-Am is played over three courses in North and South Carolina.
"It's OK," he said. "I had a great time meeting friends and seeing fans."
Rice made his tour debut last month at the Fresh Express Classic, going 83-76 to miss the cut. Rice had hoped to make major strides at the BMW and vowed earlier this week to buy Cristal for the house if he made it to Sunday.
That ended dramatically in the first round, when he played the first nine holds in 13 over. He took a 10 on the par-4 second hole.
There were no such blowups on Friday. He had just one double bogey at Bright's Creek compared with six holes of double bogey or worse on Thursday.
His worst mistake of the second round came on his 16th hole, the seventh, when he needed two swings to get out of a greenside bunker. Other than that, Rice kept his drives straight and his approach shots mostly on target.
"It was a little bit better than yesterday but I'm learning a lot," Rice said. "I made mistakes yesterday and I tried to come back and redeem myself a little bit."
Rice was gracious and jovial with his partners and the fans, some who had his famous No. 80 San Francisco jersey for him to sign.
Rice, who'll be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer, looked like he could still wear out cornerbacks and safeties with his precise routes.
One time on the 618-yard 17th hole, Rice was walking to his ball way to the right of the fairway when his pro partner Clint Jensen cautioned the football star to be careful not to slip crossing a small creek.
"You don't think I can make that?" Rice said with a sly grin. He cleared it with ease.
It's pro golf that's not so easy for Rice. He said he saw how hard the players work at their profession, something he did for 20 seasons to become one of football's greats.
"If I can't fully commit to it, even though I really enjoy it," he's not going to enter, Rice said. "There are some good golfers that really need to get on this course."
Rice wouldn't rule out returning to the BMW Charity Pro-Am as a celebrity competitor, like baseball Hall of Famer Jim Rice, Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers and actor Kurt Russell -- all who took part this week.
Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey, the former "Big Break" champion who shot a 64 Friday, says competitors like Rice bring attention and prestige to the Nationwide Tour. "Plus he looks like he could still lace them up" for football, Gainey said.
Right now, Rice thinks his golf future is purely recreational. He's glad for the chance to try and the inside-the-ropes perspective he received from other pros.
"Like I said, this was not a publicity stunt," Rice said. "I came out here, I played hard and I tried my best."

Amputee Ken Green returns a 74 on Seniors Tour

FROM THE PGA.COM WEBSITE
Joey Sindelar, Bobby Clampett, Russ Cochran and Peter Senior shot 7-under 65s in the Regions Charity Classic to share the lead after the record-setting opening round at Hoover, Alabama.
The 77 players in the field had a scoring average of 69.519 on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Ross Bridge course, breaking the tournament record of 70.397 set in 2002 when the US Champions Tour event was played at Greystone.
"The course was just how we like it," said Sindelar, a seven-time PGA Tour winner seeking his first Champions Tour title. "The grass from tee to green is fabulous. You can't do it better. And with no wind out there, you're going to see some nice scores."
Ken Green, playing his first stroke-play event since having the lower part of his right leg amputated following an auto accident in June, shot a 74. He had four birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey while walking the 7,396yd course.
"It was hard, and I got emotional at times during the round," Green said. "The four birdies I made was fantastic. I had lots of good hope out there, and I'm encouraged going forward."
Thirty-four players were within three shots of the lead and 60 broke par.
"The course played firm and fast, but the speed was not such where too many putts would get away from you," Cochran said. "So you could be fairly aggressive on the putts. I'm sure the pin placement will get tougher. But if the greens stay soft, people will fire at the hole."
R.W. Eaks, David Frost and David Peoples opened with 66s, and Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Larry Nelson, Corey Pavin and David Eger, coming off a victory May 2 in the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic, topped a group at 67.
Defending champion Keith Fergus had a 71. Seven-time PGA Tour winner Bill Glasson also opened with a 71 in his senior debut.
Cochran reached 8 under, but bogeyed No. 17 to drop back into a tie for the lead.
"I just hit a weak putt," Cochran said. "All I had to do was hit it solid with a little curve, and I didn't do either."
