Honours even in Loretto v Gullane Juniors rematch

By IAIN McLEAN
After the wash-out earlier in the year, Gullane Juniors and Loretto Golf Academy played the second half of their bi-annual fixture on Sunday. The weather at Craigielaw resembled an early summer's day which proved excellent for scoring.
The Loretto pairs played in two-ball foursomes format against a pretty strong team from Gullane.
Each Loretto pairing was conceding shots to their opponents apart from Game 6 and it proved to be a tight contest.
George Munsey and Julie Yang got the ball rolling for Loretto with a commanding 4 & 3 victory over Alexander Wilson and Gullane captain Greg Houlston. The pair were in control of their match from the start and closed out a deserved victory on the 15th green.
Every other game was, quite incredibly, decided by the margin of 2 & 1!
After the initial Loretto victory, Gullane then levelled with a good win in the top tie, with Under 16 cap Anthony Blaney and in-form Alasdair Simpson playing some fine golf to record a good victory over Loretto's top pairing whose combined handicap is + 2.
Lewis Gregory and Sami Bouzabia combined with some fantastic figures for a 2 & 1 victory in match 3 over Jamie Black and Michael Williams.
The two following ties went against Loretto with good victories for Gullane pairings Graham Swan and Gary Brownlee, and Olly Ladbrooke and Finn Donaldson before the Loretto all-girl partnership of third form students Laura Alexander and Migle Rusteikaite combined to defeat Lara Frostwick and Cameron Good to ensure the match was drawn overall - a fair result
Well done to the Gullane team against very high quality international opposition!

Transistions Tournament sponsor hits out at

timing of Tiger Woods TV interviews

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
By MARK REASON
A leading golf sponsor has criticised the timing of Sunday night’s TV interviews with Tiger Woods, both of which went out just as Jim Furyk was close to clinching his first official victory on the US PGA Tour for three years.
David Cole, the managing director of Transitions, said: “We are a little bit disappointed that they chose to air that story at the conclusion of a very exciting tournament. We invest a lot of money in the Transitions Championship as a title sponsor.”
Woods can plead that he is not responsible for when these two interviews were aired, but Tiger has enough control over his image to have insisted they were put out on the day after the tournament. Tiger news has now disrupted three tournaments in five weeks and has done nothing to get rid of the “selfish” tag attached to him by Ernie Els.
Furyk, who has replaced Ian Poulter as the world number six following his victory, said: “I can live with it and I’m fine with it. Some day it’s all going to go away, and I’ll be fine with that, as well.”
Whether Furyk’s sponsors will be so happy is another matter.
Ari Fleischer, the former White House aide brought in to improve Tiger’s image, has stepped down saying he was becoming too big a part of the story.
Caddie Steve Williams, who one leading golfer had backed to lose his job, said at the weekend: “I told Tiger I’d be there (at Augusta).”

Hugh Hunter's Clackmannan County News

EARLY MATCHES FOR THE COUNTY GOLF TEAM

The first matches in the well-established Provan Salver competition take place this weekend, and the Clackmannan team are in action against Angus on the inks at Montrose. Team Captain John Gullen is hopeful of some good performances and has already had a team get-together. Playing for Clackmannan will be Scott Borrowman, Darren Hulston (both Dollar), Ian Ross, Jamie Aitken, Scott Moffat and John Salmond (all Alloa) and Mike Rust (Braehead).
Junior John Salmond will be making his first appearance for the Senior team, having had an outstanding 2009 season.
John will be looking at the results of these early matches to select a Clackmannan team for the Area Team Championship to be held at Kinross on May 17 and 18. The format of this event has changed … for the worse in the opinion of many.
Preliminary rounds used to be played over three weekends, involving the 16 Areas in four groups of quality match-play games. All that has been swept away and the Championship will be decided over one weekend with a 36-hole stroke-play qualifying on the Saturday and only four Areas going forward to smaller match-play games - an arrangement which disadvantages the smaller Areas (like Clackmannanshire).
Since there is a commitment to a central venue, the more remote Areas will always have “away” matches.
COUNTY JUNIORS IN ACTION

Clackmannan junir champions Gary Chalmers (Dollar) and Scott Baird (Tillicoultry) were in action at the weekend at the Junior Champion of Champions held over The Duke's Course, St Andrews.
In the field of 34, Gary struggled on the outward nine but found his game on the last nine holes to record an 81 and finish in 23rd position. Scott finished further down the field, and is hoping for some college golf when he starts his Chemical Engineering course later in the year. The boys’ title was won by Simon Fairburn (Craigielaw) with a one-over-par 72.
Alva’s Lawrence Allan will be featuring in the Junior Tour events run by the Scottish Golf Union, thanks to his fine performance in the Under-16 Winter Series. Around 30 of the elite Scottish Junior Golfers will compete in five events over the next three months--- the first event tees off at Monifieth on Sunday.
Clackmannan junior convener Sam Kinnaird is pleased.
“It will be a great opportunity for Lawrence to test his golfing skills against the top boy golfers in Scotland and I am certain he is looking forward to his first event at Monifieth.”

MIDLAND ALLIANCE
The last event, played over the Crieff course, produced more success for Wee County golfers. In fact almost identical results to recent weeks with Bob Stewart (Tulliallan) taking the runners up spot in the scratch division with a 68 while Chris Westland and Hugh Hunter shared the handicap prize with net 66s

TARTAN TOUR
Not to be out done by the amateur successes, local golf professionals are also making inroads into National competitions----in the Tartan Tour Winter Four-balls, held over the par 72 Dundonald course in Ayrshire, Paul Brookes (Pitreavie) and Jamie Stevenson (Braehead) finished sixth equal position with a 2 under 70, while the dynamic duo of Gregor Abel and David Herd (Alloa) were 3 shots further back. Callum Macaulay watch out!!

By ALAN COWIE
Boat of Garten professional Ross Harrower won the North Scottish Golfers' Alliance Championship fixture at Fortrose & Rosemarkie after John Forbes (Inverness) was unable to make the scheduled play-off.
Forbes posted a five-under-par 66 early on with six birdies and a single dropped shot at the 17th.

Paul Cormack withdraws from Xltec Pro Tour opener

to play as champion in North-east Alliance foursomes

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
New North-east Alliance champion Paul Cormack (Inchmarlo Golf Centre) has had second thoughts about playing in the new Xltec Pro Tour event at Whitekirk, instead of the North-east Alliance pro-am match-play foursomes at Murcar Links on Thursday and Friday this week.
"I had entered the Xltel Pro Tour competition at Whitekirk on the same days but that was before I had won the North-east Alliance championship and before I realised there was a clash of dates between the two events," said Cormack tonight.
"I've had a think about it and, as North-east Alliance champion, I feel that I have to be loyal to it and play in its foursomes.
"I can always play in later events on the Xltel Pro Tour but this is the last North-east Alliance event until next September and I feel my place is at the foursomes."
Cormack, 26, lives in Banchory when he is at home - he is a regular competitor on the EPro Tour in North Carolina and other American satellite events.
Xltec Pro Tour's self-funded prizefund for their first 36-hole event at Whitekirk will amount to at least £5,000 whereas the NE Alliance foursomes' pro prize money will be considerably less.
Cormack partners Duff House Royal senior circuit amateur Mike Jenkins in the first round of the foursomes against Banchory assistant Steven Chalmers and McDonald Ellon amateur Kevin Duncan.
One definite change in the line-up at Murcar Links sees Charles Cassie (Nigg Bay) substitute for Martin Forster (Cruden Bay as partner to Nigel Parker (Murcar Links) in the handicap tournament.
Revised draws for Thursday are:
SCRATCH (Evening Express Shield)
professional named first
9.30: J Mooney (Kingscliffe) & K Nelson (Murcar Links) v D Naylor (Banchory) & A Bews (Murcar Links).
9.40 P Lovie (P1 Corporate) & D Clark (Duff House Royal) v R Hyland (Craibstone) & S Larkin (Banchory).
9.50 S Chalmers (Banchory) & K Duncan (McDonald Ellon) v P Cormack (Inchmarlo) & M Jenkins (Duff House Royal.
10.0 I Bratton ( Newburgh ) & F Bisset (Banchory) v R Fitzpatrick (Inchmarlo) & C Carnegie (Kemnay).

HANDICAP (Press and Journal Trophy)
10.10 J Emslie (Royal Aberdeen) & A Petrie (Oldmeldrum) v D Wilson (Duff House Royal ) & H McNaughton ( Cruden Bay ).
10.20 D Corkey (Royal Aberdeen) & B Lumsden (Northern) v C Cassie (Nigg Bay) & N Parker (Murcar Links).
10.30 B Harper ( Newburgh ) & M Booth (Kemnay) v M Lawrie (Kemnay) & N Stewart (Northern).
10.40 P McIntosh ( Newburgh ) & D Randall (Banchory) v A Dunton (McDonald Ellon) & N Chisholm (Kemnay).
+Second-round ties in both competitions will be played on Thursday afternoon with both finals at Murcar Links on Friday morning.

Tiger admits he is nervous about crowd reaction

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Tiger Woods is feeling the tension ahead of his return to golf after four months in self-imposed exile.
Woods, giving his first interview since the November car crash outside his home which was the trigger for a slew of revelations about his private life, is set to return to action at the Masters in Augusta on April 8.
The 14-time major winner is expected to protected from too much media intrusion at Augusta, but it is the reception from the fans that is giving the American most cause for concern.
Asked what he expected from the crowd, Woods told ESPN: "I don't know. I don't know. I'm a little nervous about that to be honest with you.
"It would be nice to hear a couple claps here and there. But also hope they clap for birdies, too.
"I'm excited to get back and play. I'm excited to get to see the guys again. I really miss a lot of my friends out there. I miss competing."
Woods announced he was taking an "indefinite break" from golf in December, and two months later confessed to a number of extra-marital affairs in a lengthy statement.
Woods admitted his life had become a "lie" prior to entering rehabilitation.
He said: "I was living a life of a lie, I really was. And I was doing a lot of things, like I said, that hurt a lot of people.
"Stripping away denial and rationalisation, you start coming to the truth of who you really are and that can be very ugly."
*** CBS turned down an interview with Tiger Woods after being told the network would be limited to five minutes of questions.
The troubled golf star answered questions from reporters at ESPN and The Golf Channel for the first time since the beginning of the sex scandal that has sidelined him. Both aired on Sunday, and both networks said the only restriction placed on them was a five-minute time limit.
CBS said no.

"Depending on the specifics, we are interested in an extended interview without any restrictions on CBS," said CBS Sports spokeswoman Leslie Anne Wade. The network is airing much of the Masters golf tournament next month, where Woods is making his return to the game.

Tiger's TV interviews steal some of limelight

as Jim Furyk ends long no-victory spell

FROM THE PGATOUR.COM WEBSITE
PALM HARBOR, Florida (AP): Jim Furyk finally won after 32 months and 58 tournaments, and it became a footnote Sunday.
==================================================

PGATOUR.COM: Complete coverage of the Transitions Championship
==================================================
When he finally reached the 18th green after a wild detour through the trees at Innisbrook, two television networks broadcast the first interview with the Tiger Woods since revelations he had been cheating on his wife.
Furyk wasn't aware of this until after he won the Transitions Championship. One of Woods' closest friends on the US PGA Tour, he walked into the interview room holding a three-page transcript of Woods' interviews with ESPN and the Golf Channel.
"You know what? Tomorrow, the paper is going to read that I won the golf tournament, and I don't really care if it's a three-page spread or a little blurb in the corner of the paper because the article is about him.
"I won the damn thing, and it really doesn't matter to me."
All he cared about was winning for the first time since the 2007 Canadian Open, his longest stretch without a victory since he first joined the US PGA Tour. He almost cared too much.
Furyk closed with a two-under 69 for a one-shot victory over K.J. Choi, and he made it way too hard on himself.
He missed the last three greens in regulation, making a remarkable par save from a bunker washed out by earlier rains, then hitting what he called a half-shank from the trees, a shot that nearly took out NBC Sports reporter Roger Maltbie.
"It all worked out in the end," Furyk said.
The road getting there was more of a roller-coaster than Furyk wanted -- the birdie on No. 10 to build a three-shot lead, failing to make birdie on the par-5 11th, a 35ft birdie on the 12th, a pair of three-putt bogeys on par-3s sandwiched around a knockdown 8-iron into 3ft for birdie on the 14th.
"I have a habit of making it tough on myself," Furyk said. "Just nerves got me, to be honest with you."
Furyk finished at 13-under 271 and won for the 14th time in his career, moving to No. 6 in the world.
Choi, who started three shots out of the lead, was tied with Furyk through seven holes until a two-shot swing on the par-3 eighth. Choi never got any closer until the final hole. He closed with a 4-under 67, but his runner-up finish should be enough to move him to No. 47 in the world and give him a good chance to get into the Masters.
Choi raised both arms in a strongman pose when he heard about the world ranking, a good consolation prize, provided he stays in the top 50 after Bay Hill next week.
"It's actually better than what I thought I would be at this point," Choi said. "So definitely I've exceeded my expectations. All I can say is I will try my best next week to maintain or better that position."
Bubba Watson, who has never won on the US PGA Tour or Nationwide Tour, also gave Furyk a good run and was within two shots throughout the back nine during a final round that had nearly six hours of weather delays.
Watson played without a bogey until the par-3 15th, when he came up short of the green, chipped over the green and dropped a crucial shot. He made pars the rest of the way for a 68, finishing alone in third.
Nick Watney had a 67 and was fourth, while defending champion Retief Goosen was another shot back after a 71.
Furyk did capture the unofficial Chevron World Challenge in December at Sherwood Country Club against a world-class field of 18 players, which counted toward the world ranking. Even so, going so long without winning on the US PGA Tour was starting to grate on him.
He finally has an answer.
As he walked into a ballroom for the trophy presentation and someone mentioned how long it had been since he won, Furyk was quick to correct him. It had not been more than 2 years, rather 20 minutes since his tap-in for par, even as Woods was answering questions.
"I think it's good for him to get his face out there and have people see him," Furyk said. "They are going to make their judgments, but I think it allows him to kind of move on and get focused for the next thing."
The starting times on Sunday were moved up to avoid an afternoon forecast of thunderstorms, which arrived earlier than expected. After a delay of just over an hour, Furyk was on the first tee waiting for the fairway to clear when the siren sounded to suspend play, and the rumble of thunder soon followed.
When players returned to the course nearly four hours later, Furyk opened strong with two birdies in three holes, with his biggest challenge coming from Choi.
A two-time winner at Innisbrook, Choi had four birdies in six holes, including a 60-foot putt across the green at No. 3 and a 10-footer at No. 6 for a share of the lead. Furyk restored his cushion with a two-shot swing on the par-3 eighth by making a 25-foot birdie putt as Choi missed the green and failed to save par.
Watson was lurking all along, but Furyk didn't budge from his spot atop the leaderboard.
Watson finally cracked on the par-5 14th, when he chipped too strong and ran through the green, having to settle for par. On the next hole, Watson hit short of the 15th green, chipped over the back and took his lone bogey of the day.
EUROWATCH: Luke Donald finished the highest-placed European player with a closing 71 for 277 - six shots behind Furyk. Donald earned $187,650, compared with the winner's $972,000.
Padraig Harrington, the first round leader, required 144 shots for the last 36 holes compared with 144 for the first two rounds. He finished joint eighth on 278 and earned $145,800.
Justin Rose was one behind Harrington in joint 13th place. Rose had two good middle rounds of 68 and 67. It was his "outer" rounds of 73 and 71 that kept him out of the top 10 or higher.
Martin Laird made the top 30, joint 28th to be precise with rounds of 70, 70, 73 and 70. Even one sub-70 score would have made a difference to his final placing. The man from Glasgow earned $30,946, which is more than Ian Poulter and the others who missed the cut did.
