English Golf Union send Southgate, White to Mexico

Matthew Southgate (Thorpe Hall, Essex), 21, and Josh White (Chipstead, Surrey), 18, will represent the English Golf Union in the annual Mexican amateur championship and international pairs tournament at Club Campestre Monterrey in Monterrey City from March 18 to 21.
The Mexican amateur championship is played over 72 holes of stroke play with the international pairs tournament running alongside, the aggregate scores each day of both players counting. Southgate and White gave impressive performances for England in last month’s Costa Ballena Quadrangular Tournament in Spain. As foursomes partners they lost just one of their three matches, Southgate won all his three singles while White was also unbeaten, winning one and claiming two halves.
This will be the seventh occasion that the EGU has sent players to the event but the title has yet to end up in English hands. Kent’s Lloyd Campbell and David Skinns from Lincolnshire won the pairs event in 2005, while Matt Cryer from Warwickshire and Cheshire’s Paul Waring finished third in the pairs in 2006.
