First man out John Mitchell (Fraserburgh) set the early clubhouse target of 67 (35-32), which included four successive threes from the 10th (birdies at the 11th and 12th), and it was not beaten by anyone else in the field of 83 competitors. It was equalled at irregular intervals by Scottish seniors match-play champion George Paterson (Northern) 36-31, Kevin Duncan (McDonald Ellon) 34-33, former US college circuit player Scott Larkin (Banchory) 34-33 and Oldmeldrum club professional Hamish Love, 33-34 Mike Booth, a 12-handicapper at Kemnay, had the lowest net score of 60.
