Powfoot's Ian Thomson wins South

stroke title over home course

“Local Hero” Iain Thomson of Powfoot won the South of Scotland men's amateur hampionship around his home course in testing conditions at the weekend with excellent scores of 70 and 72 for a level par total of 142.
Iain won by two shots from clubmate Mike Grunwell who scored 73 and 71.
It was Iain’s second South championship, having won his first a decade ago in 1999.
The re-arranged competition, which had been washed out the weekend before, attracted a field of 60 players with the top 16 stroke-play totals qualifying for match-play championship which will be concluded with the semi-finals (8.30am) and final on Sunday (September 6).
The Powfoot team of I Thomson, M Grunwell and S Wightman (286) now go forward to represent the South in the Scottish club championship at Prestwick St Nicholas.
