Luke Thomas, a county player from Vale of Glamorgan, upset the form book when he won the Welsh amateur championship at Southerndown.
Thomas won by a 3 and 2 margin in the 36-hole final over Cornwall-based Rhys Enoch.
This success has propelled Thomas, 24, into the Welsh side for the four-cornered home international series at Hillside, Southport, at the end of the month.
Thomas was one down at the halfway stage but then, after two halves at the beginning of the second round, he enjoyed a purple patch, knocking in a 10-foot putt for a birdie on the third, winning the fourth and putting his tee shot at the short fifth to within two feet of the pin to move into a two-hole advantage.
Thomas then rattled in a 20-footer at the ninth for another birdie to turn for home three ahead. He also eagled the 13th, courtesy of a 15-foot putt, to re-establish the three-hole advantage and held on for a surprise victory.
Luke Goddard, 21, will be disappointed if he is not in the Walker Cup team, to be announced on Monday after being crowned English champion at Rye.
Goddard beat England team-mate Farren Keenan, from Surrey, three and two in Saturday's 36-hole final. A run of three birdies in four holes around the turn in the afternoon sealed his victory.
The Scottish title went to David Law, 18, who became the first teenager to win both the men's and boys' national matchplay titles in the same season. Law, from Aberdeen, beat Paul O'Hara at the 38th hole at Royal Troon.
