Clemson University junior (third year) student Kyle Stanley shot a two-under-par 70 to take a two-shot lead after the first round of the Jones Cup Invitational at Ocean Forest Golf Club in St Simons Island, Georgia.

Stanley was the only player in the international field of top-class amateurs to break par on the opening day over a long course, 7,321yd.

Alabama University freshman Bud Cauley, Oklahoma State freshman Morgan Hoffmann, Georgia’s Harris English and mid-amateur Mike McCoy are tied for second after shooting 72.

Georgia’s Brian Harman and Brinson Paolini, who’ll be a Duke freshman this fall, are tied for sixth after shooting 73. Harman finished second in the 2005 Jones Cup and T-7 in 2007.

The Jones Cup is a biennial event played the same years as the Walker Cup.
