US PGA Tour event

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
John Mallinger followed his best performance of the season last weekend with a seven-under-par 63 on Thursday to join Doug LaBelle II at the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the Frys.com Open at Scottsdale, Arizona.
Mallinger, who finished tied for third at the Shriners Hospital for Children Open, fired eight birdies and a bogey in his opening round at the par-70 Grayhawk Golf Club.
The 29-year old began his round on the back nine and was out in five-under 30.
LaBelle, who has just one top-10 finish in 20 events on the PGA Tour this year, also began his round on the back nine but enjoyed his success after the turn with five birdies on the front nine, including three on his final four holes.
Richard Johnson of Wales shot a six-under 64 to put himself in sole possession of third place heading into Friday's second round.
Johnson, who has made only eight cuts in 26 attempts on the PGA Tour this year, got off to a sizzling start with four birdies on the first six holes en route to his best round of the season. He finished with eight birdies and two bogeys.
Mathias Gronberg of Sweden, Chris Stroud and JJ Henry are part of a six-way tie for fourth on five under.
Defending champion Mike Weir is tied with five other players on four under after carding a 66.
