Hugh Hunter's Clackmannan News Round-up
SCOTTISH STROKE-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
The top stroke-play event in the Scottish Golf Union’s calendar took place at the weekend over The Duke’s course.
Friday was a disappointment for the entrants because the first round was cancelled due to fog, and the event shortened to 54 holes. In good sunny weather, only one qualifying round was held on the Saturday with the top 40 players and ties going forward to two rounds on the Sunday. The qualifying cut fell at 74 to give a final field of 54 players, almost half of them from outwith Scotland.
Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan made the cut quite comfortably with a level par round, helped by an eagle and a couple of birdies on his inward nine. This left him four shots behind leader Adam Wainwright. Scott Borrowman (Dollar), with an 83, finished well outside the qualifying score
In the final two rounds, Callum could not improve on his opening par round, finishing with rounds of 75 and 80, leaving him down the field on 226 and some way behind the winner of the tournament, Wallace Booth (Comrie).
Wallace at present lies second to Callum in the Scottish Golf rankings and his win will allow him (and others) to catch up on Callum.
ST ANDREWS LINKS TROPHY CHAMPIONSHIP
Now well established as one of the most prestigious amateur stroke play events, the 2008 championship has attracted an international entry, and locals Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) and Scott Borrowman (Dollar) will be testing their skills over the Links courses.
Four rounds are played with a cut after 36, the final rounds being played over the Old Course.
BOYS' AREA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
The top representative competition for the Clackmannan County boys goes to the Kingsknowe course in Edinburgh this weekend. Each of the 16 golfing Areas sends a team of four boys to play foursomes in the morning, and individual stroke play rounds in the afternoon.
There is always a strong field, and it is some time since the county had some success. County selectors have chosen the following four boys to represent the Wee County, and they will be hoping to improve on the rather lowly positions of Clackmannanshire seen in recent years.
Clackmannan team is:
John Macpherson (Braehead), Grant Dowie (Alloa), Lawrence Allan (Alva), Gary Chalmers (Dollar).
ROYAL AND ANCIENT TEAM SQUAD
Many congratulations to Callum Macaulay on his inclusion along with two other Scots in the 17 strong team squad for selection to the GB and Ireland golf team for the St Andrews Trophy match.
Training sessions have been organised and the selectors will choose a team to take on the Continent of Europe at Kingsbarns at the end of August.
