THURSO'S DON MACKAY WINS
NORTH ALLIANCE TITLE
AT WICK

Tain's scratch golfer, three times a runner up, was denied a first Quaich victory in the North Golf Alliance season when Thurso's Don MacKay came from three shots behind to sweep to a four shot success with a brilliant four under par winning score at Wick.
Mackay who only came into contention with his third winning score of the year at the Brora fixture three weeks ago went into the 72 hole aggregate lead after a superb first nine holes of 30 at Wick, five birdies, 1st, 3rd, 6th 8th and ninth holes.
He finished with a four under par 65 which reduced his previous 72 hole aggregate to a winning 275 to relegate the previous joint leaders, Ferries and Ron Taylor (Wick) to second place. Ferries took the runner's up prize with his 279 total as a result of his “away” scores bettering those of Taylor, who had held the Quaich for the past three seasons.
The Thurso member, who has a handicap of two, then saw his nett 72 hole aggregate of 267 lift the MacKintosh Salver and relegate another three times previous runner up in this competition, Seann Sutherland (Bonar-Bridge – Ardgay) to second place.
Sutherland's nett total of 268 had lead by three from the Holder Mike Keay (Tarbat) going into the final fixture but when MacKay's nett 63 from Wick was added to his three other best nett returns from the year he went a shot ahead of Sutherland.
There was a small consolation for Ferries when he helped his club win the team trophy. With such a poor entry only four clubs could put forward four players each to complete the team scoring. Thurso dropped out when one of their four members did not return a card and this just left Tain, Wick and Durness with four scores to call upon. With a winning nett of 66, in the Class 1 section Raymond Lockie led Tain to the team victory with a total of 289. Tain's other nett scorers were Billy Ferries 70, Munro Ferries 76 and Ali Melville 77, to win by six shots from Hosts, Wick.
