SCOTS BOYS HAVE GREAT
OPENING DAY WIN
OVER FAVOURITES FRANCE

On paper, France were the hot favourites to win the boys' quadrangular international tournament hosted by them at St Cyprien Golf Club near the border with Spain.
They have almost all the lowest handicap players in the tournament.
But, on the opening day, Scotland rose to the occasion and slew the giants by the convincing margin of 6 1/2-3 1/2.
The morning foursomes set the tone for the day with the Scots making a 3-0 clean sweep and also winning the singles session 3 1/2-2 1/2
Scotland's double winners were Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck), pictured right, Mark Bookless (Sandyhills) and Andrew McLachlan (Bonnyton).
Paul Shields (Kirkhill) was a winner in the foursomes and gained a halved match in the afternoon.
Hazlehead's David Law and Shields teamed up in the morning for a 2 and 1 win over Romain Wattel and Erwan Vielledent but Wattel, who has a handicap of +4.3, beat scratch player Law when they met again in the afternoon singles ... but David took him to the 17th green before going down by 2 and 1.
Sweden beat Italy 6-3 in the opening day's other match, despite losing the foursomes 2 1/2-1/2
